8th Grade Party Committee Forming
|
|
|
|
Now that the second semester has begun, it is time to look ahead to 8th-grade promotion (gasp!). Traditionally, a committee of parents organizes an 8th-grade promotion party to celebrate the kids' time at DVMS and the transition to high school. While it is currently unclear whether a traditional party will be allowed, we will certainly be doing something special to celebrate this transition for our students.
At this time, we are looking to officially form a committee and appoint co-chairs. Our aim is to meet within the next few weeks to begin planning for the class of 2021.
Please email Jessica Huard by the end of the day on Sunday, January 10th if you are interested in being a member of this committee. Additionally, please indicate if you are willing to chair or co-chair.
Thanks so much and cheers to our class of 2021!

Safe & Proper Msk Disposal Tips
|
|
Face masks are very important in protection against COVID-19 and save us from catching and spreading infection. While masks have become a global requirement, their improper disposal can be harmful to the health of others and disastrous for the environment. Here are a few tips for proper disposal of masks:
- Always wash or sanitize your hands before you take off your mask.
- Surgical and disposable masks should be taken off by the strings. Avoid touching the front portion of the mask. Fold it in half inwards and then fold again to make a roll. Wrap the ear loops around it to secure. Then wrap the mask roll in a tissue paper or plastic bag and discard it in a trash can.
- Please avoid disposing of masks anywhere other than a trash can.
- Please snip off or break the strings so as to avoid marine animals trapping in the masks if they end up in our waterways.
- Cloth masks can be successfully reused after washing and drying completely. Worn masks should be disposed of the same way as surgical ones.
- N95 respirators can be reused if stored in a dry bag and kept moisture-free for 3-4 days. Please follow the guidelines of the manufacturer for reuse. Dispose of the same way as a surgical mask.

Thank You note from our Sister School
|
|
January 2, 2021
Dear Diablo Vista Middle School Community,
On behalf of our principal, Jessica Petrilli, and the 25+ families in our community that you supported this Christmas, I want to offer a heartfelt thank you. Helms and DVMS have a long history together - you have been our beloved Sister School for a very long time now and for that we are grateful. You have always been generous beyond measure - shopping, wrapping, and delivering hundreds
of gifts for families in our community over the years. This year, as so many people have faced terrible challenges and losses, your willingness to find ways to safely continue our Christmas tradition and your incredible generosity in sending gifts to families were extraordinary.
We would especially like to thank the Leadership class for organizing this labor of love, the moms for volunteering their time to coordinate the partnership between our two schools, and all of the DVMS families who sent gifts to 25 of our students and to every member of their families
! In addition, I received 19 gift cards - some of which were distributed over the break, and some of which we will use to assist families when crises arise.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! You have not only brought joy to many Helms families, but you have also uplifted the entire Helms community with your example of loving kindness. We appreciate you!
With mucho gratitude,
Joyce Synnott, MSW Beacon Director Helms Middle School

Reflections Showcase is Now Open
|
|
|
|
The Reflections Virtual Showcase is now live! We invite all of the DVMS community to view our showcase on the PTSA website under Reflections 2020.
Visit our virtual gallery featuring the artistry of our very own DVMS students. Works include dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography, and visual arts. The creativity and enthusiasm demonstrated in these original pieces portray the personal meaning and reflection of each artist on this year's theme, which is "I Matter Because..."
For the protection of our artists, only DVMS families with Schoolloop logins are allowed access to the Showcase. If you have any questions, please contact the Reflections Chair at dvmsptsareflections@gmail.com.

2021 Superhero Story Contest
|
|
Talentnook is pleased to announce the 2021 Superhero Story Contest, specifically designed for students in grades 6 through 8.
The prompt is: What the world needs now is a new superhero. Now’s your chance to create one. 2020 has been a very difficult year. We need superheroes to guide us with their magic powers. In these times, we need fighters to win for humanity. Where and who are they? What kinds of problems can they cure? What kind of world can we expect in 2021? Design your superhero to help the universe. Put your creativity and your genius to the test. We will all be grateful. Oh, and have FUN! THE BEST SUPERHERO WINS!
The contest will award two categories of winners: narrative story and graphic story (comic book style) We will pick a first-place winner for both categories as well as runner-ups. We are excited to expose our middle schoolers’ talents and concerns about the world and have students put their thoughts on paper.
The contest ends on March 31, 2021. We’ll also have a virtual awards ceremony on April 29, 2021. Further details can be found on the contest website.
Here’s to writing, here’s to getting our youth to expose their concerns, and here’s to creating enthusiasm by putting and organizing young people’s thoughts on paper. Here’s to the writing contest that gets boys and girls to not only speak their mind but also to have fun creating a better world.
