Historical Tidbit:
January 1:
Born 1735: Paul Revere ~ silversmith, engraver, and patriot from Boston who alerted the militia of the arrival of British troops
Born 1752: Betsy Ross ~ sewed the first United States flag
1818 – Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley publishes the world’s first science fiction novel: Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus

The use of a baby as a personification of the new year has been traced to ancient Greece, where an infant in a basket was paraded around to mark the annual rebirth of Dionysus, the god of wine and fertility.
Sometimes accompanied by Father Time, “Baby New Year” has appeared in banners, cartoons, posters, and cards for several hundred years."

Climate Can Do:
Eco-Friendly Gifting
This holiday season, let’s give our communities the gift of zero waste! Here are a few things to look out for and a few tips for giving (and wrapping) earth-conscious presents:
Shop recyclable: most shiny wrapping paper and glittery cards are not recyclable. Try brown or recycled paper or reusable fabric totes or sacks.
Save energy: holiday lights make wonderful decor, but we should be mindful of their impact on the environment. Keeping your lights on a timer or setting aside time to turn them off can save you money on your electric bill and energy. Also, consider what types of lights you’re using. LED lights consume up to 80% less energy than traditional incandescent lights and last 10 times longer. Switching to LEDs will reduce your carbon footprint and present a lesser risk of fire.
Eliminate excess: a family game of Secret Santa is not only fun and personal but can save you from buying a gift or two for everyone at the party. Additionally, if you are careful with your decor and the wrappings you receive with presents, they can save you time, money, and waste for next Christmas! Reuse and upcycle decor, wrapping, ribbons, string, and even Christmas cards, which can be cut up to make tags.
Buy Local: save time, get personalized attention, and make someone's dreams come true, spend your holiday dollars at a small, local business.

Celebrating the 28th Annual Holidays in Halifax!
On Sat, Dec 14, Halifax threw its 28th Annual Town-Wide Holiday Celebration, courtesy of the Holidays in Halifax Committee! The community kicked off the day at the Opening Ceremony and Tree Lighting on the Town Green, and from there, festivities traced all throughout town. To ensure everyone got to participate in the many, many activities, there were several parking locations provided and a Hayride Route with convenient pickup and drop off locations.

| | | Halifax was truly alive with Christmas Spirit from the local vendor Craft Fair at the elementary school to the 7:45p reading of "The Night Before Christmas" by Dick Steele at Holmes Public Library. After the Opening Ceremony, Holmes Public Library hosted a Meet and Greet with Santa. Beautiful performances by the Bell Choir and the Silver Lake Regional High School Select Choir were held at the Congregational Church and Holmes Public Library. Halifax was adorned with light displays and ice sculptures, and patrons enjoyed the SLRHS impressive art show. Local vendors provided a variety of delicious menus, including meals, desserts, drinks, and other treats. The annual Chili Cookoff at the Schoolhouse was another huge success, and the Congregational Church had a fantastic display of gingerbread houses and town building replicas for people to bid on. Proceeds from the bids went to Home Base, a non-profit serving veterans and their families, and Halifax Police received many new donations to their Christmas Toy Drive.

During Holidays in Halifax, the community came together with town pride and Christmas cheer, and they made this season of giving special for everyone. Thank you to the sponsors of this year's Holidays in Halifax: MacDonald Industries, Rockland Trust, North Easton Bank, Tiny & Sons Glass, Cumberland Farms, The Farm at Raven Brook, Oak Point Train Club, The Dias Family, Country Rentals, Halifax Boy Scouts, Friends of the Holmes Public Library, Halifax Generations, and the Town of Halifax Employees and Departments. Thank you to the vendors featured in the Craft Fair and to the food truck vendors stationed around town: Wicked Flavah'd, Loco Larry's Tacos, South Shore Smoke House, Just the Dip, Teddy's Hot Dawgs, and Jolly Lolly Waffles. Thank you to the Holidays in Halifax Committee for your hard work and coordination, and most of all, thank you to everyone who came out and brought this town tradition to life once again.
