Tolkien on Unexpected Good

"All we do know, and that to a large extent by direct experience, is that evil labors with vast power and perpetual success—in vain: preparing always only the soil for unexpected good to sprout. So it is in general, and so it is in our own lives… But there is still some hope that things may be better for us, even on the temporal plane, in the mercy of God."

-J.R.R. Tolkien, letter to Christian Tolkien, 1944

On Friday, March 22, participants from SCAPC are invited to visit Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women in Baker, Louisiana. If you are interested in taking part in this pilgrimage, please email Pierce Young (pierce@scapc.org) with your name and email contact so we can schedule our visit this week. The women’s prison is north of Baton Rouge so participants will meet at SCAPC at 9 a.m. and depart shortly thereafter. The program takes place from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. and we will return that afternoon.

Choir & Orchestra on March 24

During the 10:30 a.m. service on Palm Sunday, March 24, the SCAPC Chancel Choir and Orchestra will perform Mack Wilberg’s Requiem, heralded for its “judicious use of both time-honored craftsmanship and a near-cinematic orchestral style that makes the work accessible yet eloquent”. All children will be invited to join in a palm procession at the beginning of the service.

Breadmaking as a Spiritual Practice

Many people observe the Lenten period with various spiritual practices, among those breadmaking, which can be a metaphor for God's care of each one of us: the rising, the kneading and the shaping. Come and explore this topic during Holy Week.

On Wednesday, March 27 from 6:00-8:30 in the Land Building we will have dinner, a discussion of the process of making bread and the ways it can reflect our relationship with God, and then actual breadmaking. We will prepare the communion bread for the Maundy Thursday service, and each participant will have a loaf of bread to take home as well. The cost is $15/person and your check, delivered to Pierce in the church office, is your reservation. Please reserve by noon on Monday, March 25.

Kinship Senior Center "Trivia for Charity" Night

The Kinship Senior Center has extended an invitation to SCAPC members to join them for a "Trivia for Charity Fundraiser" on Friday, March 21, 6-9 p.m. at Zony Mash Craft Brewery, located at 3940 Thalia Street in the Historic Gem Theater (across from the S. Broad Pumping Station). The festivities will include trivia, giveaways and raffle prizes! Trivia tickets are $10/each and raffle tickets are $5/each. Purchase at this link.

THE SECULOSITY OF MARRIAGE & PARENTING

January 7 - March 24 | 2nd floor conference room | to be led by Christina Carlisle

Statistics show that fewer and fewer Americans are attending church, but author David Zahl argues that we are in fact more religious than ever. Using his funny and insightful book, Seculosity, we will dig deeper into three of the areas that can consume us as adults - Busyness, Relationships, and Parenting – and learn what to do about it.

THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW

January 7 - March 17 | Phifer Library | to be led by John Galbraith

In telling the story of Jesus, Matthew challenges his disciples to live each day as participants in God's kingdom--to be poor in spirit and pure in heart, turn the other cheek and love one's enemies.

Class recording: March 10

Classes for all ages meet at 9:30 a.m. See our Sunday School page for details.

New Sunday School Class

A new Sunday School class on the books of Philippians and Galatians will begin on March 24 in the Phifer Library. The letters to the Philippian and Galatian congregations illustrate the passion and intensity of Paul's writing. Together these letters provide a compelling portrait of a theologian and social critic of rare power and insight whose legacy continues today to spark heated debate. If we can catch even a little of Paul's vision, we are likely to be transformed. We may find ourselves called, like Paul himself, to a fresh vision of what God is doing in the world and to participation in the crucified body of Christ. Class recordings will be posted following each session.

We invite you to join an online community of different faiths for zoom discussions on various topics using the Qur’an, Hebrew Bible and Old Testament. Lenten Food Drive

One in five children in the U.S. - that’s 13 million children - live in food insecure homes. Throughout the season of Lent, we are collecting non-perishable foods for the Broadmoor Food Pantry to help alleviate this problem. Our highlighted item this week is cereal. You can bring this and other nonperishable items to the collection bins at the Chapel entrance on State Street or in Frampton Fellowship Hall.

SCAPC Members Return from Cuba Visit

The congregations of SCAPC and El Fuerte Presbyterian Church in Cardenas, Cuba have partnered for nearly 35 years. In 2007, SCAPC members installed a water purification system at El Fuerte in conjunction with Living Waters for the World, and SCAPC members return to perform regular maintenance at least annually. Martha Beveridge, Mary Monsted, Kate Prechter, Dorothy Burns and Laura St. Clair visited El Fuerte last month. To learn more about SCAPC's Cuba ministry, click here.

Laura St. Clair (foreground, left) signs a Covenant Agreement with Pastor Yamilka Gonzalez, promising three years of financial support and maintenance to El Fuerte's water filtration system.

SCAPC and El Fuerte members enjoyed an afternoon making cross necklaces, sharing lunch and dancing to live music.

Medications collected by SCAPC Presbyterian Women were delivered along with a new walker for one churchgoer, shown here with Martha Beveridge.
