I have to say, I love the Olympics! I enjoy learning about the athletes and hearing about their personal and physical journey to get to this elite level of competition. There are so many talented individuals, completely motivated by passion and a competitive spirit, hoping to take home a medal not only for themselves, but for their country. And to do it all in front of billions of spectators? That's like a sport within a sport, the combination of one's mental and physical prowess. It's humbling. It's inspiring. It's heartbreaking. It's the Olympics.
For those that know me, you're fully aware that my free time has never been committed to athletic greatness. But I kid you not, I'm all too eager to cheer and subsequently cry when an athlete succeeds. I can barely get through the inspirational commercials being aired between sporting performances this week without choking up. I feel all the feelings and I fully register the significance of that singular moment that represents a lifetime pursuit of athletic achievement. Some ending with a medal. Others, without.
Olympians might be the purest form of grit. Broken this and twisted that and they just keep going. Illness, mental health, tragedies, age, life: all the things that sneak up and catch us off guard. And yet they overcome and keep going. Oh to be THAT awesome! But as we all know, not everyone goes to the Olympics. "The percentage of humans on earth competing is 0.000001560845334% or one one millionth of one percent." -answers.com
One one millionth of one percent? Those are crazy odds! And yet we have an Elkhorn native who currently eats and sleeps overseas preparing for his debut at the 2024 Olympics! How cool is that? These men and women have trained and competed on repeat for years, if not decades. Be sure to tune in and celebrate what these athletes and their families have dedicated their free time toward!
