Summer Jobs Highlight:
The North Shore Workforce Board and North Shore Medical Center (now Mass General/Brigham, Salem Hospital) have partnered for many years on entry level summer jobs in Lynn and Salem. Opportunities to work and learn about the hospital have been invaluable, and this January, plans were developed to expand the program to involve more career exploration and career pathway development within the healthcare industry. Enter Covid-19, and the plans were put on hold, but then resumed in a virtual manner. 15 youth had the unique experience of completing a 20-hour a week summer job from their own home.
North Shore Medical Center provided youth with health care career exploration workshops and activities, and paired youth with a hospital mentor. Youth were exposed to clinical and non-clinical careers within the healthcare industry through virtual tours and discussions with NSMC managers and staff. They also completed 15 hours of Signal Success curriculum, AND a for-credit college course titled “Understanding Higher Ed and Career Pathways,” offered by North Shore Community College!
All of this was created in a a matter of a few weeks and had never been done before, especially not in a virtual manner!
