"A Story of Bond and Broccoli"

By Bob Singleton, executive director, Greater Astoria Historical Society

Former Astoria/LIC resident, Albert R Broccoli, claimed that his father, Giovanni, an immigrant from Calabria at the turn of the 20th century, descended from the Broccolis of Carrera, who he claimed deserved credit for first crossing cauliflower and rabe to produce the dark green, thick-stalked vegetable known as broccoli in Italy and was grown more recently on their broccoli farm on Long Island.

In his words, “[My family] is not named after broccoli – broccoli is named after them! Imagine your family producing James Bond - and that is NOT being the most famous thing you have done.” Read more here
