Scenes from Village life

Updates from the In-Village Team

Holden Village may be temporarily closed to guests, but life in the mountains continues.

A core group of In-Village Team members are rotating into the Village approximately every three weeks. They travel via helicopter with groceries to supplement the food stores already in the Village. The team is made up of operations, services, and risk and safety staff.

With such a small group, the sense of community feels stronger than ever. Here's a glimpse of what life in the Village looks like right now.

We look forward to welcoming all back to the Wilderness soon.

Holden Village Closed to Hikers summer 2026

Due to limited staffing and restricted supplies, Holden will be closed to hikers this year. The Village is unable to provide accommodations, meals, or supply drop-off services to hikers.

Please also note that FR 8301 remains closed from the Lucerne landing at Lake Chelan to the ballfield/wilderness boundary west of the Village. Accessing the road on foot or by vehicle without the permission of the USFS is prohibited.

Stehekin, however, is open and accessible by ferry, and we invite you to explore the many opportunities for hiking there.

For current information about wilderness trail conditions, closures, and alerts in the region, please visit the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest website.

Garbologist Report

Composting is going well! Back in December we put all food we believed would spoil into large containers we kept outside in the snow. When we returned in January some of that was salvageable, but some didn't fare as well. This did create an influx of food waste in the system.

More importantly, I have been working on overdue bin maintenance. The bins have been known to leak during the decomposition process. A makeshift shower pan was intended to catch this, but it never worked properly. I am in the process of ripping out the Gorilla tape we used to seal the interior corners of the bins and replacing it with a much better sealing caulk.

I checked the biofilter the other day. We were told the wood chips would need to be replaced potentially every two years (it has indeed been exactly two years since their installation!) The top layer of wood chips is still intact, but I need to dig further to check decomposition closer to the bottom.

Thanks to an industrial woodchipper purchased through donations in 2025 we are now able to use the proper amount of bulking agent. Before we had the woodchipper, finding the right size carbon bulking agent was impossible in the quantity we needed. Now we have it in abundance and the timeline for full decomposition has been significantly reduced.

Everything is still working exactly as intended, and with the smaller community we are averaging roughly 70 to 90 lbs. of food waste per week. Compare this to the normal 100-ish lbs. per day that we process this time of year when the Village is full.

Isaiah Vespers

We're like to issue a correction to a previous newsletter. In our April 22 publication we cited 2025 as the publication date of the Isaiah Vespers, when in fact it was originally published in 2017.

John Hermanson wrote the music for Isaiah in 2016. He brought it to Holden when he was an artist in residence the summer of 2017. Over the years Holden has used it as a vespers service on various occasions. Most recently, Hermanson and Maren Haynes Marchesini created a new edition of Isaiah Vespers to compliment the 2025 summer theme of Life Anew.
