The Secret History of the Color Red: Virtual Tour of the Forbes Pigment Collection with Alison Cariens

Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at 6-7pm ET.

Seeing red for Valentine’s Day? Explore the unexpected history of this seductive color with conservation coordinator Alison Cariens, one of the voices from the popular audio tour of the Forbes Pigment Collection. Get a behind-the-scenes look at the reds of the Harvard Art Museums’ Forbes Pigment Collection, home to more than 2,700 samples of pigments, spanning the history of art.
Alison Cariens is the conservation coordinator in the Straus Center for Conservation and Technical Studies at the Harvard Art Museums. A major aspect of her position involves working closely with the Forbes Pigment Collection, assisting with new additions, cataloging the collection, and managing access, media requests, and tours. Alison received her bachelor’s degree in art history from the University of New Hampshire, with minors in business administration and Italian studies. While her love of art and museums was apparent from a very young age, it was not until she began work with the Forbes Pigment Collection that she discovered a true passion for the building blocks of art: pigments and artists’ materials.

MGNE membership not required. All are welcome to join.
