From Interim President Betsy Hendrey:
On Sunday, October 11, Queens College will celebrate its 89th anniversary. On that date in the year 1937, the college opened its doors to the 400 students who comprised its first freshman class. Most hailed from Queens, and roughly half of them were women. It is difficult to imagine, but at the time much of Queens was still farmland. At Dedication Day on October 26, Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia advised the crowd to “Keep your buildings low . . . and your ideals high. And keep away from politicians.”
For more information on the college’s storied history, please watch the video produced by the Office of Communications and Marketing, The College of the Future: The History of Queens College. The video traces the college’s origins, from its founding through Commencement 2026. It highlights the college’s positive impact and betterment of lives through higher education.
We will soon begin planning for our 90th anniversary and celebration of the college's impact on the quality of life in our borough, city, and state and an examination of the role we will play going forward as a leading public higher education institution.
