A Message from ORES Principal Denise Francisco
Hold on to your hats – March has blown in with more wacky weather and lots of activity around our school this coming week! March 4-8 is Severe Weather Awareness Week. Our students will participate in the Statewide Tornado Drill on Wednesday morning. Also, this week our Battle of the Books Team will head off to the BOB Competition on Wednesday at UNC-Greensboro. They have worked hard to prepare, and we know they will have a great day! A portion of our 5th grade will head to Charlotte Motor Speedway for an interactive field trip on Wednesday as well.

The Student Council is meeting on Thursday after school to prepare for the American Red Cross Blood Drive that will be happening in our school gym on Wednesday, March 13 from 2:00-6:30. We hope many of our families are planning to join us at the Blood Drive on 3/13/19.

Finally, this week another extracurricular team – the Odyssey of the Mind Team heads off on Saturday, March 9th to Northwest High School for their culminating competition. If you want to be highly engaged and see creative students at their finest then you should come support our ODM team this coming Saturday, March 9th at Northwest High School. The 2nd and 3rd Grade Team competes at 8:30 am in the High School Media Center, the 5th Grade Team competes at 9:00 am in the High School Computer Lab, and the Primary Team competes at 12:30 pm in the Middle School Auxiliary Gym.

A couple of weeks ago I shared that our students would begin wearing Student ID Cards as part of a GCS Initiative called One Card. We have gone over the expectations as a staff and our students will begin wearing their One Cards on Monday, March 4th.  The students will not be bringing their One Cards home. If your child accidentally wears his/her One Card home, please just send it back to school the next day.

Have a great week!

Second-graders need to be able to tie knots!!! A note from Ms. Hodnett
Second graders are beginning their first weavings with yarn and are very excited! This fun and achievable weaving will become a treasured artwork. However to make this a positive experience from beginning to end, and for me to keep this a second-grade project, all second graders should be able to tie simple overhand knots to tie off their weavings when they finish!!!

In Art Class we say, “Around behind and through to make a cursive Q!” or “Around behind and through like you’re tying a shoe”, and then repeat to seal the knot! 😊

All of our sponsors, no matter how big or small, make a difference. Sponsoring our weekly newsletter, gymnasium banners, website and school planners helps us provide the school staff, our students and our families resources that the school's budget does not provide.
