Lord Of Life

Drive-In Movie Night

Saturday, September 7th

Movie Showing Begins At 7:30 PM

The Garfield Movie

Hopefully, you’ve saved the date for the evening of September 7th for an outdoor family fun movie night. We will be showing The Garfield Movie. This is for Lord of Life members and those in nearby communities. The plan is to have a fun filled night with popcorn, fellowship. We will also introduce neighbors to the Lord of Life family and facilities in a “non-churchy” setting. Does this sound like fun?!?!

Well, your Church Council and the Discipleship, Evangelism, and Communications Committee (DECC) team believes it will be. Synod grant funds have been approved, along with some Thrivent action team funding.

We have a number of volunteers on board to help with different areas such as giving parking directions, setting up/breaking down, floating support to assist with any emergent items, and likely a building monitor(s) to allow rest room access. However, we would still like to have some additional volunteers! We need you to help make this a fun and safe event.

If you are able to join in as a volunteer, please contact Ed Hourihan, at ejhourihan@verizon.net .

God's Work

Our Hands Sunday

September 8th

The eleventh annual God's Work, Our Hands Sunday will be held on September 8th. Quilts, which will be donated to Lutheran World Relief, will be displayed and blessed during the church service. Another blessing will be offered to the Grace Place. Also during the church service, our Mission Team will give a presentation to the congregation about their trip to Kentucky.

Following the church service, we are set to clean up two Tabernacle roads. A second activity will be gathering up the quilts from the Sanctuary and boxing them for shipping to Lutheran World Relief's collection center in Vineland. Other activities are being planned. We hope you will be able remain after the 9:30 AM church service to participate.

Road Cleaning Sign Up Sheet:

If you want to participate in the road clean up, please put your name on the sheet that is on table in the Narthex . You can also email James Cuviello, road clean up coordinator, if you plan to be a part of our road clean up team. A link to his email is below.

Social Ministry Team

Invites You And

Your Ideas!

Monday, September 30th,

At 7:00 PM

Matthew 25:35-36 "...for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me."

It’s no secret that Lord of Life heeds God’s call to help others, and I know that is a part of your heart. Would you like to lend your voice in helping to guide our Social Ministry? On Monday, September 30th, at 7:00, we'll share ideas about how we are helping God's people now (there are lots!) and ways that we may want to help in the future. We'd love to have you join in the conversation! Please prayerfully consider joining in or be in touch to let me know that you're interested. This will not be a monthly meeting but probably quarterly or as needed. We may even meet on ZOOM!

God's peace,

Air Conditioning

Campaign Update

Another old unit recently stopped working. The air conditioner that serves the Narthex area no longer operates. This leaves only the west Sanctuary unit of the original four still working. While we have already replaced one of these original four, we must get two more done sooner than later. We also anticipate that the one remaining functional unit will fail in the near future.

We are most grateful for all the contributions that have been received through our Air Conditioning System Campaign! We are blessed to have received over our initial goal of $14,000 to date! The total amount of donations stands at $23,165. This will pay for the unit that was already installed which services the office area wing of the main building and the remaining funds will be used to help pay for the other units that need to be replaced. Please click on the link below to view a video "Thank You!"

To View The Video - Click Here

Our ultimate goal is to receive a total of $50,000 by July 31, 2025. Any money received beyond our goal will be used to replace other air conditioning units that the church owns.

Your donations of any size to this air conditioning campaign, which are above and beyond what you pledged to the church in 2024, will be literally felt by everyone that enters our building.

Your donations, labeled "Air Conditioning Fund", may be placed into the offering plates. The electronic giving service Tithe.ly (https://tithe.ly/give_new/www/#/tithely/give-one-time/956196) has been recently updated for this new fund. Of course, you may mail your

donations to the church, too.

Thank you for considering this emergent need. Your contributions,

whether it be once, weekly, or monthly, to this campaign will help every

member of our church to worship the God that loves us.

Quilting Ministry Update

From Gloria Brosious

September 2024 has many Quilt Ministry related dates in it. The quilts will be dedicated and packed on God’s Work, Our Hands Sunday, September 8th. On Tuesday and Wednesday, September 17th and 18th, the quilts will be delivered to the Redeemer Lutheran Church collection center in Vineland.

We are fortunate to have our quilters. This September we will be crossing 1,000 quilts delivered to Lutheran World Relief for world-wide distribution. We have been blessed with dedicated quilters, blessed with donations of fabric, and sheets for backing. The only cost we have is the batting, but even that is covered by funds received through the Thrivent Action Team Program which is coordinated by Lord Of Life church members who have Thrivent accounts.

Thanks to all who have done so much to make our Ministry a success!

A "Note" From Rick Krause:

Cartoon Christmas Trio Coming To Lord Of Life

It may be the middle of summer, but Lord of Life is already planning for the Christmas season! We will be hosting the Cartoon Christmas Trio for a free concert at the church on Saturday, December 7th.  The group plays music from classic Christmas cartoons--especially the music of Vince Guaraldi (the composer of the "Peanuts" soundtracks).

We are in desperate need of children and youth for a choir to sing "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" and 1 or 2 other Christmas songs. Do you know anyone who might be interested? Please let Rick Krause know ASAP

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Rick Krause. You can see him at church, send him an e-mail, or text/call him at your convenience. (3rick@lordlife.us; (856) 287-5328)

If you would like to find out more about the Cartoon Christmas Trio, please visit their website at https://cartoonchristmastrio.com/home.

Mission

Accomplished!

Our Mission Team arrived home safely after an inspiring week of volunteer work in Harlan, Kentucky. It was warm, rainy, and humid, but the Team still was able to complete their assigned tasks in the building of a house. They were one of three teams doing the roofing, siding, and a deck.

On the first day in Kentucky, while traveling in the van, the vehicle was rear-ended. Fortunately, there were no injuries, and the car damage was minimal enough to allow the van to still be used. However, the vehicle air conditioning then stopped working and only the front windows were able to open during the 95 degree temperatures experienced on the ride back, which included some traffic jams. This was a new vehicle with only about 5,000 miles on it!

The photos show our group at work, progress on the construction, the completed house, and scenes from the local area.

Welcome home team members Lu and Ed Hourihan, Lee Jennings, Tina and Bill Leach, Penny Miller, and Lynn Walsh. God bless you for the work that you did!

Update On The Process Of Getting A Full-Time Pastor

A Message From Church Council President Bill Reich:

I'd like to take a few moments of your time to give you an update on the process of getting a full-time pastor for Lord of Life.

It may sound simple - fill in an application, and send it to the New Jersey Synod office. This application is called a Ministry Site Profile (MSP). Just as we expect to see a resume of potential candidates, the candidates also want to know about our church. You can think of the MSP as our church's resume. The MSP describes who we are as members of Lord of Life.

Who are we? How do we describe ourselves? We have done this process before - five or six years ago - can't we just use that MSP that we created previously?

Your church council decided to not rely on the information from the previous MSP. The council wanted a fresh take on things even though some things may not have changed since the time of the previous MSP. In February, the council began to discuss and perform a SWOT analysis of our church. SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. SWOT analysis is a framework used to evaluate a company's competitive position and to develop strategic planning. SWOT analysis assesses internal and external factors, as well as current and future potential. In short, SWOT helps us see what we are good at, where we could be better, and what might impact our future together.

Your council has also been studying the book "Abundance: Creating a Culture of Generosity" by Michael R. Ward. This is a recent text - published in 2020. The book focuses on, and wants us to think about, the positive nature of things in life instead of the "woe is me" outlook of life. The book focuses the reader on how to use what is available for the glory of God. One wild thought that came to my own mind after reading this book is, “Why didn't we use the land of the church to create a Christmas Tree farm?” This idea MIGHT HAVE provided a different source of income to the church that could have been used for different ministries. Wild thought isn't it? God has given us an abundance of blessings. How can we use our blessings to glorify God?

The book also tells us that the church needs a vision. Members of the church do not want to think about electric bills and such. Members want to know how their contributions are to be used for ministry. This is also what a potential pastor for us will want to know. Similarly, our current Air Conditioning Campaign is not just about physical machines. Contributions to the campaign allow us to replace the machines so that ministry and worship can occur in a building that is a welcoming environment for all.

As we progress towards documenting our church's vision, and using the data from the SWOT analysis, the council has been led to discover the core values of Lord of Life. The council looked at all of the ministries of our church. What can be said about them? Do certain themes come to light ? Here are four core values that your council discovered in July:

1 - Care and Nurture of the Congregation - caring for each other

2 - Compassion for those in need

3 - To Make Disciples for Christ - Education

4 - Joyful Worship

Everything done at Lord of Life falls under these core values. Future ministry opportunities will be judged by these core values. If the new opportunity does not fit with our values, do we really want to put energy towards this new thing?

Next, your council thought about a summary statement for all of this work. Actually, your council discussed in August, a Mission Statement for Lord of Life. A mission statement guides us into the future. The various literature of the worldwide church suggests that a church's mission statement changes, on average, every seven years. There have only been two mission statements at Lord of Life since I became a member in 1998. As we enter a new era with a new pastor, the church council created a new mission statement to guide us into that era. The new mission statement will be revealed at our 2025 Congregational Meeting.

All of this information (SWOT analysis, core values, mission statement) will be transposed into a new MSP that represents Lord of Life Lutheran Church. After reading our MSP, potential pastor candidates will want to jump through hoops to get the opportunity to join our membership in ministry!

The completion of the MSP leads us to the next step in our pastoral search process: creating a Call Committee. This committee of 5-7 members is given the responsibility of working with the New Jersey Synod and privilege of interviewing the potential pastoral candidates and selecting a pastor to present to the council for recommendation to the congregation. This is a holy task that is to be done prayerfully and carefully. Your church council has a goal of having the Call Committee formed by mid-October 2024.

Pastor Barry Scott has been very involved with all of this research and learning by your church council. Please give him a big THANK-YOU when you see him.

See you in church!

You're Invited!

How You Can Help!

As a congregation member, did you know that you are the best force of bringing new members into our church community? We have come up with an invitation program in which you can be a part.

We have "Invitation Cards" available (See the photo above which includes our knitted "octopus," and the two below of the text on the cards.) that you are encouraged to pick up and give to friends and neighbors with children who do not have a church home or are seeking a different one. All you need to do is to hand the invitation to them and tell them about our church and youth programs. This kind of outreach by you will certainly make a difference to bring them into our church family.

(Breanne has the invitations. See her to pick up as many as you like.)

Book Changed To:

The Four Argreements

By Don Miguel Ruiz

Book Club will resume on Septmeber 10th, but our previously announced book is unavailable so we had to make a change. There are copies of our new choice of book in the library (be sure to get the book and not the companion book). As far as used books, Abe Books has copies for $3.

The Four Agreements is a book written by Don Miguel Ruiz, a Mexican surgeon and author who turned from science to spirituality after a bad accident. It draws from the tradition of the Toltecs, ancient, indigenous people of Mexico and is outlined by 4 guiding principles:

1.     Be impeccable with your word.

2.     Don’t take anything personally.

3.     Don’t make assumptions.

4.     Always do your best.

Just stating the 4 agreements, they seem simple enough. Through reading this book, we have learned that the most simple things can actually be what we need to put more of our focus into to live a balanced and fulfilling life.

The new school year for all our classes will begin on Tuesday, September 10th. During the week prior to opening day, on Friday, September 6th, a Back To School Night will be held. During the church service on God's Work, Our Hands Sunday, Breanne Tomlinson will offer a blessing of the children’s backpacks.

There are still some open spaces in our classes. If you wish to have your child attend Grace Place in 2024-2025, please contact the Director, Amy Wilmot. The phone number to call is 609-268-2756 and a link to her email is below.

Grant Received For Updating Equipment

The staff of Grace Place has been busy the last few weeks preparing the facility for the opening of school on September 10th. A major part of the process has been to evaluate items that are old, broken, and those that no longer meet the current regulations regarding the operation of a pre-school. To help us replace the disposed equipment, the Grace Place received a grant of $7,000 from Grow NJ Kids to purchase up-to-date replacements. The children will love what has been added or replaced and will be able to better enjoy their experience at our pre-school.

We have been working with Grow NJ Kids for the past school year to improve our school and be up to date with state standards as well. A big Thank you to our church family for helping remove items from the hall and basement that were outdated and needed to be discarded.

We are always looking for help in the summer to prep the school.

Grace Place Director

Grace Place Seeking A Bookkeeper

Term To Begin September 2024

Grace Place is seeking to have a bookkeeper for the next school year. This is a volunteer position that someone from the congregation can fill. It is helpful for this church member to have a background in accounting and managing budgets, but it is not a requirement.

Here is the job description for Grace Place Bookkeeper:

The Bookkeeper is responsible for keeping the financial records of the preschool program in order. They will look at income and expenses of the program and compare them to projected budgets. He or she is also responsible for approving checks needed for the program. They will need to attend one Grace Place Board meeting a month.

If you wish to be considered for this volunteer position, please contact Grace Place Director, Amy Wilmot.

Seeking Potential

Church Council

Members

As we begin the Fall season, it is time to start thinking about electing a new set of church council members. The election will take place at our 2025 Annual Meeting which is normally held in January. Council members need to take their calling to serve seriously. They have a duty to:

- leave personal agendas behind, make decisions in the best interest of the church based upon core values

- read and process material provided for a meeting ahead of time

- attend monthly meetings

- prepare ahead of the meeting to resolve issues in order to allow the meeting to run smoothly

- make the organization, our church, their number one philanthropic priority during their term of service

- listen to the viewpoints of others

- guard the mission of the church and not allow for “mission creep,” that is, engaging in activities that do not align with the core values of the church

- become articulate in being able to describe the purpose and impact of our church

- assure that the mission and ministries of the church are funded appropriately

- be involved in at least one ministry of the church with other volunteers

If you feel a calling to participate on the church council of YOUR CHURCH as outlined above, contact the Nominating Committee Chairman, Ed Hourihan. A link to his email is below.

Project LOL:

Parking Lot Lines Repainted!

You no longer have to guess if you have parked in a parking space or not! On Tuesday, August 20th, the parking space lines in our parking lot were repainted. The church bought the paint to do this and the labor was donated. Jim Shepherd, the father of one of our Grace Place students, provided his time, equipment, and hard work to get the job done. Jim, we greatly appreciate what you did for our church! Also, thank you to Keith Lerner for coordinating what was needed to get the project completed.

Lord of Life has several ongoing ministries in which all members are welcome to participate. There is something for everyone! We have groups that enrich our church service experience, we have programs that provide help in a variety of ways to church members and those in the nearby community, and we even have projects that reach across the globe.

The first link following each brief description will give more information, and the second link is to the ministry point of contact.

Wednesdays Away

One Day Retreat

Wednesday, October 2nd

Wednesdays Away is a time of spiritual renewal hosted by Cross Roads throughout the year. Our time together includes prayer and conversation, led by a spiritual director and focusing on a different spiritual practice or theme each month. These retreats are open to all people interested in exploring new faith practices. Attend one or attend all—and be sure to invite friends to join you.

The October 2nd topic is “TURNING” and will be led by Laurie Matarazzo. As the leaves turn and the seasons turn, we will explore our turning and where it takes us.

New Jersey

Senior Citizens

Tax Relief

The Senior Freeze Program is a New Jersey tax relief program for which certain senior citizens can participate. The deadline for filing for the current eligible year, 2023, is October 31, 2024. Below is the link to the New Jersey official website:

https://www.nj.gov/treasury/taxation/ptr/index.shtml

Check the website for details. Links also appear in the text below.

The Senior Freeze Program reimburses eligible senior citizens and disabled persons for property tax or mobile home park site fee increases on their principal residence (main home). To qualify, you must meet all the eligibility requirements for each year from the base year through the application year.

Taxpayers who are 70 1/2 or older can transfer up to $100,000 from a

traditional IRA tax-free to charity each year. The "qualified charitable

distribution" will count as your required minimum distribution without being added to your adjusted gross income! One of our Lord of Life church members is already taking advantage of this. Read all about it in the links

below, and consult your tax advisor.

Boardwalk Hall

Organ Tour

Friday, August 9th

Fifteen church members and friends took a tour of the Boardwalk Hall Organ in Atlantic City. This is not only the world's largest organ with over 33,000 pipes, but the world's largest musical instrument. The tour included a concert by organist Scott Breiner, who is the musican and music director at Grace Lutheran Church in Somers Point. He spoke to our group after the concert and is shown pictured with Rick Krause in one of the photos. After the tour and concert, our group had lunch at the Rain Forest Cafe. We hope to plan another tour soon for all who were unable to attend. Thanks to Rick Krause for "organizing" the tour!

Citizens Bank Park Tour

Tuesday, August 13th

Our trip to the ballpark was filled with fun, excitement, and even some special batting practice thrown by Phillies pitcher Ranger Suarez. We even had a catch of a batting practice baseball! Thank you to tour guide, Rick Krause, for giving us a very special day!

Jersey Shore BlueClaws Game

Thursday, August 15th

Baseball oriented good times continued just two days after the Citizens Bank Park tour. Thirty-six Lord of Life members and friends attended the minor league at Shore Town Ballpark in Lakewood. Our group enjoyed some fun, fellowship, fireworks, and even a 3 to 2 BlueClaws victory!

Bookbag And School Supply Collection Delivery

Monday, August 19th

Barbara Ma and Judy Lerner, seen in the photo to the right, are sorting supplies for children of Bridge of Peace in Camden and the Christian Caring Center Browns Mills. Cynthia and Tom Tait were also present to help. Pictured below is Jim Ernst with his car loaded with your donations that were sent to the Christian Caring Center. Barbara Ma will make the delivery to Bridge of Peace. Any additional supplies that are received will be delivered prior to school opening.

Thank you to all who donated the bookbags and supplies! Your generosity is appreciated and will put smiles on the faces of many children.

From The Editor:

LifeLines Ending Song:

A tradition during the serving of Holy Communion is for the congregation is to sing hymns. Years ago, what my childhood church did was to have two different Communion hymns: one when the church was less attended and one when many people were there, like an Easter service. You can find this hymn as ELW #592 in our hymnal. During those church services of long ago, we would start at verse one and continue as long as it took to complete Communion. If we ran out of verses, we began the hymn at verse one again. It’s not surprising that many in the congregation never had to look at the hymnal for the words while singing!

An Extra:

Lutheran Summer Music had this instrumental selection played as one of its presentations. It features several of the participants as solists on different instruments. The tune is "Ash Grove," and you will recognize it as ELW #881, "Let All Things Now Living." Thanks to Rick Krause for sharing this with everyone!
