Letter From Principal Haley

Caregivers,

October is cruising along! We have had our fair share of all types of weather. Please check the forecast before sending your student to school so they're ready for the conditions we'll have that day.

I’m not usually one to notice what people wear on their feet, but now that I’m on recess duty daily, I notice which footwear leads to a successful time outside and which doesn't. Sneakers are by far the best bet to have your children wear when the weather is pleasant. Boots come into play when the weather turns cold and wet. Crocs, sandals, cowboy boots, ballet shoes (yes, I’ve seen it), and other “specialty” shoes are not ideal. Please send your children in with shoes that let them move around with grace, speed, and agility.

Each week, students meet in multi-grade groups for our Town Hall. Students in grades 4-6 attend from 8:30 am-9:15 am, while students in grades K-3 attend from 9:30 am-10:15 am. During Town Hall, we address multiple topics. This year, we have been highlighting listening. We have discussed the difference between listening and hearing. We have practiced listening through a variety of activities. The goal is for students to take what they learn in Town Hall and apply it in the classroom. I encourage all caregivers to ask about Town Hall each Friday afternoon!

Using our schoolyard after school hours is very popular. Our new playground continues to be a big hit. Unfortunately, we are starting to notice some behaviors that lead to less than desirable outcomes. Our playground balls are often scattered across campus, trash is left behind, and today I noticed one of our pickleball nets is compromised. My hope is that folks who do use our schoolyard after school hours can be respectful of the materials and leave no trace in terms of trash. We are making some adjustments on our end. Starting today, we will bring our playground balls inside after our second recess. If you wish to use a ball on the playground, we ask that you bring your own. For now, we will continue to leave our pickleball nets out so folks can use them. I hope everyone can be mindful of our grounds and keep them clean and tidy.

As always, feel free to reach out with any questions, concerns, or celebrations!

Respectfully,

Keenan Haley

Classroom Highlight- 5th Grade

Fifth Grade Enrichment: Learning, Creating, and Growing Together

This fall, fifth graders have been enjoying many enrichment activities that bring our learning to life. From the garden to the kitchen, from music to crafts, students are discovering new skills and making meaningful connections to their classroom studies.

One highlight has been harvesting garden produce and cooking with Mr. Sadowski. Students are learning about the journey from garden to table while practicing teamwork and practical skills. We are grateful to Mr. Sadowski for these delicious, hands-on learning experiences!

Our reading of Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan has inspired some especially engaging activities. As we explore the story, students have been tasting foods introduced in the book. After reading the first chapter, “Las Uvas” (The Grapes), we enjoyed grapes together. Following “Los Higos” (The Figs), students had the opportunity to taste black figs! These experiences help bring the story’s details and cultural connections to life.

We have also been creating crafts inspired by our reading, including yarn dolls. This past Friday, students learned the basics of crocheting, just like the characters in the text, and they will have more opportunities to practice this new skill in art class with Ms. Fosco. We are thankful to Ms. Fosco for helping extend our creative learning!

On full-day Fridays, fifth graders also meet with their kindergarten book buddies to share stories and build reading confidence, friendships, and leadership skills. Extra time with Mr. Parry on Fridays, gives students more opportunities to explore music and performing arts.

A special thank-you to Mr. Sadowski, Mr. Parry, Ms. Fosco, and Mrs. Piper for helping make these enriching experiences possible. We are excited to keep learning, creating, tasting, and growing together this fall!
