Interview with Kifah Riddick

2024 & 2025 Summer Intern

How did you first get involved with SCAN?

I am part of Partnership for the Future which is a college preparatory program and every summer we are supposed to apply for internships. This particular summer I was chosen for an interview with SCAN. I started my internship in summer 2024 and I am now completing it in summer 2025.

What inspired you to come back and intern with SCAN?

Last year I loved this internship; it was jam packed with super helpful activities, and I learned a lot. I was also already familiar with the staff and started building connections with them all, so going back for a second year was no issue for me.

Is there anything you wish other people knew about SCAN?

I think people should know that this program isn’t just about the after effects of abuse but that it also helps prevent anything like that to happen.

Do you have any goals or hopes for next year?

This year will be my first year attending George Mason University so I’m hoping that my new journey of adulthood and these next steps in my life will be prosperous. One of my biggest goals for the next year is to expand my professional connections and become more confident in myself.

What might someone be surprised to learn about you?

I am an avid reader, and every Christmas I go to Belize to visit my grandma and cousins. I've been visiting Belize all my life since I was 6 months old and it is like a second home away from home to me and my family.

Thank you to Cyndy Weldon-Lassiter at Challenge Discovery Projects for your partnership to help provide space for SCAN's Family Support Program groups.

In July, SCAN had fundraising days at Foxtail Coffee in Short Pump and Torchy's Tacos in Carytown and we are so thankful for these opportunities and everyone that showed up to support SCAN.

SCAN's Executive Director, Jeanine Harper, has been a part of the FACT Child Abuse and Neglect Advisory Committee for many years and is currently the co-chair; and this committee recently completed the Child Fatality Investigation & Review in Virginia. This report helps organizations all across Virginia understand the data in order to protect more children in the future.

Thank you to the Pauley Foundation for their support of SCAN's five programs that work together to prevent and treat child abuse.

Thank you to the Community Foundation for a greater Richmond for the grant to support our Community Programs initiatives to prevent child maltreatment and advance resilience at the community, organizational, and systems level.
