Why Organizations Are Moving To MDR
Among the many acronyms to know in the IT space is MDR, which stands for Managed Detection and Response. It's a relatively new compared to many traditional cybersecurity measures but has seen a drastic increase in adoption over the past few years.
As we discussed in a previous issue of Tech Talk News, part of this is due to additional requirements and checks going into place. With cyber insurance looking for (and often offering discounted rates to those that adopt) and more industry-standard practices moving closer and closer to recommending and potentially soon requiring the services for SEC or HIPPA compliance standards, it has been brought up from many other angles.
Over the past two years specifically, however, the early adopters of the technology have seen it's benefits pay off first hand and that has helped to accelerate further adoption.
What Is The Latest Market Driver?
Organizations are now looking into Managed Detection and Response (MDR) because it adds what many struggle to sustain internally: continuous, expert human interpretation of alerts and exposures with a clear business impact. Instead of receiving a stream of complex technical signals, organizations can fully outsource (or remove extreme burden from internal staff) investigation and analysis that explains what happened, how serious it is, and what needs to be done next. This is a particularly big deal given the lack of workers and expanding salaries of folks in the cybersecurity field.
Just as important, MDR can take initial mitigative actions to disrupt or contain an attack, buying valuable time for the organization to complete deeper investigation and operate with a breach being less impactful. That includes times of the day or week when no one would otherwise notice a breach and/or it'd be impossible to contact internal IT staff. While many services leverage endpoint detection and response (EDR) tools for rapid containment, modern MDR is expanding to include the ability to observe and protect systems that are not necessarily onsite – something that is becoming more useful as more business operations move to the cloud.
Ridge Support Technologies has been leveraging MDR services for three years now and we would be happy to discuss what MDR could bring to your organization if you reach out to our office, just let us know.
