The Halloween spirit has been popping up all around Fayetteville today, including a few costumed characters at City Hall and other City facilities. Tomorrow, our downtown neighborhood businesses are ready to celebrate spooky season with you and your little ones at Halloween in the District!
From 4 to 8 p.m. tomorrow, stop by participating businesses for candy and fun giveaways. Then stick around for the costume contests: the youth contest begins at 6 p.m. for ages 10 and under and ages 11–17, followed by the adult contest at 7 p.m. for ages 18 and older. Sign up and meet at 222 Hay Street for each contest. There will also be music, face painting and plenty of Halloween fun.
And while you’re out having fun, stick together, use the sidewalks, cross at crosswalks and make sure children are accompanied by an adult. Using a flashlight or glow stick and wearing bright or reflective clothing can help drivers see you. Before enjoying the treats, check the candy for open or damaged wrappers.
As you explore downtown, take a moment to notice what makes it special and where you see opportunities for its next chapter. What do you value about downtown today? What would you like to see in the future? The City’s Downtown Study is looking at ways to support local businesses, encourage investment and make downtown an even better place to live, work, visit and spend time together. Your input will help shape a plan with steps to move ideas forward.

Community partners play an important role in helping us understand local needs and shape effective responses. On Thursday, Nov. 5, the City’s Economic and Community Development Department will host two virtual stakeholder sessions about the upcoming Annual Action Plan Notice of Funding Availability. Nonprofits, community partners, service providers and others interested in addressing community needs are invited to learn about anticipated funding opportunities, eligible activities and the application process. There will also be time to ask questions and share feedback. Those who are interested can register for either the 2 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. session. The sessions will help shape the 2027–28 Annual Action Plan and guide funding priorities.
I hope your Halloween is full of treats, good memories and just the right amount of spooky fun. Have a safe and Happy Halloween!
Best,
Dr. Douglas J. Hewett
