Little Blue Heron by John Hannan

January 2025

Dear Friend,

Here's to fresh starts, new goals, and a new year! We are so thankful to you dear members for your generous donations at our year-end giving fundraiser. Because of you, we made our match of $15,000! We also took this time to reflect back on 2024 and review our impacts by the numbers. And, if you are the planning ahead type, we also have the full 2025 events calendar available to download and print for your convenience.

PS. We still have a few calendars left, so grab them while they last!

Until next time, see you on the trails.

Thank you! Year-end Match Met!

Thank you to everyone who donated for our Year-end matching campaign! We're thrilled to announce that together we raised the $15,000 needed to fulfill our matching goal!

Your year-end donation supports the repair of the West and Central Water Control structures within the wetlands, which is urgently needed at a cost of $30,000. It is expected that the new infrastructure will last for about 15 years. That gives Bolsa Chica fifteen generations of Least Terns, little Western Snowy Plovers, and many other species of migratory birds who depend on these wetlands a healthy start.

We truly could not do it without your generous support and are excited about the opportunity to make these critical repairs. We look forward to all of the important work that needs to be done in 2025.

BCLT's 2024 In Review

In 2024, the Bolsa Chica Land Trust was busy bringing 3rd grade students out to experience the wonders of Bolsa Chica first-hand, restoring even more acres with native plants grown on-site, and leading the efforts for real improvements by bringing in funds and facilitating strategic communications with local and state agencies. We were able to hire a dedicated Miracles Program Coordinator and help pass Prop 4, the largest natural resource bond in California history. Discover the impacts that BCLT achieved by the numbers in our infographic at the button below.

January's Animal of the Month: Moon Jelly

These unusual animals are part of the great diversity of species at Bolsa Chica and they contribute to the richness of the habitat. Sea jellies are an ancient and primitive form of life that can be found in Bolsa Bay. They have been on this planet for 500 million years. They have no brains, no hearts, no blood, and no bones. They are not fish, instead they are gelatinous invertebrates of the phylum cnidaria. Their predators include some fish and sea turtles, and they are an essential part of the Bolsa Chica food web. Sea jellies are also a food source for humans because they are nutritious. They are consumed in Japan, Korea, and China.
