SETTLEMENT SPOTLIGHT

Fire Code Failures Lead to $577,500 Settlement.

In June 2022, the unimaginable happened: our client lost her life in a house fire. She lived with her family in a third-floor apartment of a multifamily home when a fire broke out on the back porch. The flames spread quickly from the deck into the kitchen, trapping her inside. By the time firefighters reached the apartment, it was too late.

A fire code expert later examined the property and identified several code violations. The building lacked fire detectors with audible alarms to alert tenants, did not provide two exits located remotely from each other, and had obstructed exit stairways. Tenants on the third floor were also never warned of the fire conditions or of the unsafe, blocked exit.

On behalf of our client's estate, we filed a lawsuit against the landlord for failing to provide and maintain safe, code-compliant exits and fire detection and alarm systems. We also brought claims against the city for failing to conduct the annual inspection required for multifamily homes.

Attorney Brett Gorman handled the case. After more than two years of litigation, multiple depositions, and three mediations, Attorney Gorman secured a settlement of $577,500 for our client's estate.

EMPLOYEE HIGHLIGHT

Robert's knowledge doesn't stop at the law. He's a true history buff with a seemingly bottomless supply of uncommon facts, and a casual conversation with him can turn into a fascinating lesson on anything from ancient battles to the backstory of a forgotten historical figure. Ask him a question at lunch and be prepared to walk away knowing something you never expected to learn.

Some of Robert's most important work happens behind the scenes. He's a dedicated mentor to our newer attorneys, generously sharing his time, insight, and experience. Many of our younger team members credit him with helping them sharpen their thinking, build confidence, and grow into skilled advocates. His door is always open, and his guidance is making a lasting impact on the next generation of our firm.

That commitment to developing others extends well beyond the office. Robert serves as a leader with the Boy Scouts, where he helps young people build character, leadership skills, and a sense of service.

And come fall Saturdays, you'll know where to find him: cheering on the Fighting Irish. Robert is a proud Notre Dame alum, so if you want to spark a lively conversation, just ask him about this season.

Thank you, Robert, for your brilliance, your generosity, and the example you set for all of us!
