National Clean Off Your Desk Day takes place on the second Monday of January each year. When was the last time you cleaned out your workspace? Did you know the average work desk can be 100 times filthier than a kitchen table? Nasty, right? But there’s more. A work desk is probably 400 times less hygienic than an average toilet seat. Hygienic surroundings keep us free from all kinds of diseases. A clean workspace unclutters and inspires. And scientific research says tidy desks make you more efficient. So, take time today for some thorough decluttering and cleaning.

Remember, a messy desk is an invitation to chaos! A clean desk, on the other hand, helps you focus, be more productive, and generally makes you feel good about your workspace (as does a new laptop stand if you want to treat yourself). And when we say clean we don’t just mean physical clutter. That’s correct, your computer desktop counts too. Drag those files into a nice, neat folder!

**UPDATED****City of New Orleans Awarded $9.3 Million to Expand Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure

NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans Office of Resilience & Sustainability (ORS) announced today that it has been awarded $9.3 million from the Federal Highway Administration's Charging and Fueling Infrastructure (FHWA CFI) grant program, as part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). This transformative investment will add approximately 58 publicly available electric vehicle (EV) chargers across the city, with 66 percent of these installations located in disadvantaged communities as designated by the Climate and Economic Justice Screening Tool.

“This $9.3 million federal award represents a transformative investment in our communities, especially those that have been historically underserved,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. “By prioritizing equity and access, we are ensuring that clean, sustainable transportation is available to all New Orleanians, not just a select few.”

Combustion of petroleum gas and diesel in cars, trucks, and buses on roads in New Orleans accounts for about half of the city’s total greenhouse gas emissions. The City set a goal of 40 percent of passenger and light-duty vehicles being electric within the city by 2035 in the latest Climate Action Plan. To reach this goal, it is critical that the charging infrastructure for these vehicles is widely accessible throughout New Orleans neighborhoods.

“I am thrilled to announce this groundbreaking investment to expand electric vehicle infrastructure across New Orleans,” said Congressman Troy A. Carter, Sr. (LA-02). “These new EV chargers, strategically placed in every district and focused on underserved communities, represent a bold step forward in ensuring equitable access to clean transportation. By leveraging partnerships with institutions like Dillard University and Xavier University, we are fostering innovation while empowering our communities. This funding highlights the importance of sustainability, resilience, and economic opportunity for all New Orleans residents. Together, we are driving progress toward a cleaner, greener future!”

This federal award supports ongoing efforts led by ORS to create the City’s first Electric Transportation Roadmap, a strategic plan to expand access to clean transportation options and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. While the roadmap is still under development and expected to be published by spring 2025, initiatives like this grant align with its goals to promote equitable access to EV infrastructure, improve air quality, and stimulate local economic opportunities.

“The development of the Electric Transportation Roadmap will provide a blueprint for building a cleaner, more equitable transportation system for all New Orleanians,” said Greg Nichols, Deputy Chief Resilience Officer and Director of the Office of Resilience & Sustainability. “This award is a tangible example of how federal funding is helping us achieve our climate action goals, while also breaking down barriers to equitable access to electric vehicles.”

The new EV chargers, including Level 2 and DC Fast Chargers, will be installed at publicly owned locations across all five City Council districts, ensuring citywide coverage and accessibility. The sites were selected based on a community survey conducted in 2021.

Additionally, Dillard University and Xavier University will host chargers on their campuses, representing critical partnerships to support local communities and advance shared sustainability goals. By hosting EV chargers, these universities are helping to expand access for students, staff, and surrounding communities, while reinforcing New Orleans’ leadership in sustainable innovation.

“We are proud to host EV chargers on our campus as part of our community’s larger goal of sustainability,” said Xavier University of Louisiana President Reynold Verret. “Xavier’s commitment to creating a more just and humane society encompasses such innovation and thoughtfulness.”

“We are grateful that the City of New Orleans partnered with Dillard University on this innovative grant," said Dillard University President Dr. Monique Guillory. “This funding will provide green fueling opportunities to our Gentilly community and highlight clean energy at Dillard University. Dillard is cultivating leaders committed to sustainability and resiliency to propel New Orleans into a brighter future for us all.

This project will be in addition to the Electric Vehicle Charger Program run by Entergy New Orleans, in partnership with the City of New Orleans, which has installed 30 charging stations at 25 locations across the city. These chargers are primarily located at public facilities such as libraries and public parks.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s Federal Infrastructure Task Force, led by ORS, has now secured $140 million in federal funding from IIJA and the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), including this latest investment. Established in 2022, the Task Force identifies opportunities for federal grants to support local infrastructure and climate funding needs and priorities, ensuring that New Orleans remains a leader in resilience and sustainability initiatives.

More information about the FHWA CFI awardees can be found here. For more information about ORS’s ongoing projects and the Electric Transportation Road Map, visit https://nola.gov/resilience-sustainability.

New Orleans shines brightest in moments of despair. We know there’s no way to get through hardship without coming together - that is a part of who we are. We are a city truly defined by community.

As we continue to hold the victims and their families of the New Year’s Day Bourbon Street tragedy in our hearts, we are proud to partner with the Louisiana Restaurant Association’s Fleur du Coeur: A Culinary Tribute.

From January 13-19, 2025, please join us and other French Quarter restaurants and bars in celebrating the vibrant culinary traditions of New Orleans while supporting the New Orleans New Year’s Day Tragedy Fund.

At GW Fins, all proceeds from the sales of one of our signature dishes, Lobster Dumplings, will be donated directly to the fund, which serves as a resource to provide assistance to the families of those whose lives were taken and those seriously injured or impacted by the tragedy.

1) Deal of the Year

Louisiana has been awarded the 2024 Platinum Deal of the Year by Business Facilities magazine, a leading journal for site selectors. This is the first time that Louisiana has been recognized for having the #1 economic development win in America for the year. Writes Business Facilities:

The 2024 Platinum Deal of the Year Award recognizes Louisiana Economic Development for securing Meta’s largest AI-optimized data center in the northeast region of the state. The company plans to build the facility on a megasite in Richland Parish, representing a $10 billion investment that will create 500 direct jobs, with average salaries at least 150% of the state per capita average. In addition, the project will create 1,000 indirect jobs. State legislation reducing sales tax liability on data center equipment purchases, partnerships with educational institutions, and availability of utilities were among the factors critical in Meta choosing to locate in Louisiana.

Congratulations to Governor Landry, Louisiana Economic Development, GrowNELA, and Entergy!

What does "farrago" mean

Clarity

Orderliness

Jumble

Simplicity

farrago

/fəˈrɑːɡoʊ/

Definition: A confused mixture; a hodgepodge or jumble of various elements.

Origin: Derived from the Latin word "farrago," meaning "mixed grain" or "mash," which combines "far" (grain) and "ago" (to drive or lead).

Example: The book was a farrago of genres, blending science fiction, romance, and mystery into a single narrative.

The term "farrago" aptly describes a jumble, as it conveys the idea of a chaotic mixture or assortment of different elements. Often used to refer to a collection that lacks cohesion, "farrago" captures the essence of disorganization. When one encounters a farrago, they might find it challenging to discern a clear theme or purpose, much like a jumble that presents a haphazard arrangement of items. This quality of chaotic variety makes "farrago" a fitting word for anything that seems to be a disordered blend, whether in literature, conversation, or even physical objects.

Regift Your Christmas Trees to the Wetlands: Participate in the Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program!

NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans today reminded residents of the annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to restore our wetlands. For over 26 years, this program has contributed to the restoration of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge, while also preventing them from being placed in landfills. Thanks to residents who participate in the program each year, recycled trees have restored an area of marsh equal to approximately 200 football fields. The trees also create an important habitat for birds, fish, crabs, crawfish and shrimp.

This year, the City added expanded dates and several new drop-off sites on the East Bank and West Bank to make it easier for residents to recycle their trees. Here’s when and how to participate:

City of New Orleans Extends Opportunities to Recycle Christmas Trees Through Friday, January 17

NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans today announce the extension of Christmas tree collections. Residents are encouraged to call 3-1-1 to request a Christmas tree pickup through Friday, Jan. 17 if their tree was not collected this week. Requests can also be made by visiting https://nola311.org/.

After the 3-1-1 request is made, residents should immediately place their tree on the curb in a position that is easy for the contractor to retrieve it. Residents should also leave the trees in place until they are removed, as the contractor’s route may vary.

Trees cannot be flocked or have remnants of tinsel. Lighting and all ornamentation must be removed before recycling pick up. Residents should also try to remove plastic bases from their trees. However, wooden bases are acceptable.

The program is coordinated by the City of New Orleans Office of Resilience and Sustainability (ORS) and the Department of Sanitation, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Louisiana Army National Guard (LANG).

The trees will be sorted, bundled and airlifted by helicopter to be dropped off in the spring in targeted sections of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge. The project benefits the City of New Orleans and surrounding coastal environment while also providing valuable training hours for pilots and crewmembers of the 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 244th Aviation Regiment.

The Christmas season has come to a close, and you might be wondering what to do with your tree.

Jefferson Parish officials are reminding residents of its Christmas tree recycling program as residents get ready to ring in the new year.

According to the parish, residents in unincorporated Jefferson Parish and the Town of Jean Lafitte can bring real Christmas trees with no lights, garland, tinsel, ornaments, tree stands or plastic bags to 400 David Drive or 6440 Lapalco Blvd. from Jan. 4 through Jan. 14.

Flocked, painted and artificial trees will not be collected.

Parish officials said the recycled trees will be used to build wave-dampening fences to reduce coastal erosion in the Barataria Basin.

To keep this often-overlooked style of music alive, the band plays a mix of Jump Era classics and original compositions within the idiom. The result is a repertoire that balances energetic up-tempo numbers, slow blues, and cozy mid-tempo swingers. This breadth of material makes for dynamic live shows that are tailored to the audience.

What does "limerence" mean?

Reluctance

Zealotry

Intense infatuation

Asphyxiation

limerence Pronunciation: /ˈlɪmərəns/

Definition: a state of obsession or intense infatuation with someone, typically characterized by intrusive thoughts and fantasies about the object of affection, often accompanied by physical and emotional longing.

Origin: Coined by psychologist Dorothy Tennov in the 1970s, limerence is derived from the word "limen," meaning threshold in Latin, referring to the transition from normal emotional experiences to an intense state of infatuation.

Example: After meeting Jake, Sarah experienced limerence, constantly daydreaming about him and longing for his presence in her life.

Description: Limerence refers to a state of intense infatuation, often described as being "head over heels" in love. It goes beyond a simple crush, involving an overwhelming preoccupation with the object of one's desire. Limerence is characterized by intrusive thoughts and fantasies about the person, accompanied by a strong desire for reciprocation and emotional connection. This emotional state, coined by psychologist Dorothy Tennov, encompasses the exhilarating highs and agonizing lows associated with being deeply infatuated. Limerence can be both thrilling and torturous, as individuals consumed by it may struggle to focus on anything else, often neglecting their own well-being in pursuit of their object of affection.

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)

609-610 Fulton St

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon,January 13

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

Did you know that there is a sleuth among us? A sly protein hides in your kitchen, acting as the binding agent in many foods and beverages you consume on a daily basis. Many of us take it for granted and know nothing of its presence, while 2.5 million people in the U.S. battle against it. Can you guess what it is? Gluten — a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley that those with a gluten intolerance spend their lives avoiding. On January 13, we observe National Gluten-Free Day alongside our gluten-free friends!

Moussaka, Ceviche, Dim Sum & more: what do these dishes’ names mean?

Published on January 13, 2025

Credit: Sam Loyd

Whenever browsing through the menu of a foreign restaurant, the names can make food appear exotic, fancy, enticing, or straight-out odd. In these cases, the logic dictates that we ask the waiter for help. But a few of these foreign dishes have become famous all over the world and their names pop up in all sorts of restaurants, not just foreign ones. Take a look at the following ten and see if you already know the meaning of any of them!

1Coq Au Vin

Credit: Philippe Murray-Pietsch

A staple name when it comes to "fancy" meals, Coq au Vin is French for rooster in wine, even if the rooster is usually replaced with chicken. Coq au Vin was a peasant dish in origin due to the fact that rooster meat is tough and sinewy and it takes a long time to marinate and braise to make the meat tender.

As legend goes, this dish originated during the Roman conquest of Gaul. The rooster was a symbol of valor to the Gauls. The chief of the tribe Arverne sent a symbolic rooster to Julius Caesar to show they would never be defeated. Caesar returned this gesture with a surprising twist, serving the chief with a delicious dish of rooster in wine.

2Pasta Primavera

Credit: Mgg Vitchakorn

A literal translation of "spring pasta", Pasta Primavera certainly sounds Italian. But this dish originated in 70s America, not Italy. Sirio Maccioni, the co-owner of New York restaurant Le Cirque, initially introduced pasta primavera as an off-menu special.

Maccioni is said to have taken a dish of pasta, vegetables, and cream his wife had mixed from a hunger-induced raid of their kitchen, refined it, and started serving it to his guests. Despite its humble beginnings, pasta primavera gained huge popularity amongst diners and critics, eventually being adopted by home cooks in America and beyond.

3Vichyssoise

Credit: Bakd&Raw by Karolin Baitinger

Just pronouncing the name of this dish sounds like speaking French. Vichyssoise is a soup made of cooked and mashed leeks, potatoes, onions, and cream, served chilled and garnished with chopped chives. It was invented in the early 20th century by Louis Diat, a cook working as head chef of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in New York.

Leek and potato soup is a traditional staple of French cuisine. 19th-century French cookbooks give recipes for a simple leek and potato soup, called potage Parmentier or potage à la Parmentier. The name Vichyssoise means "ice-cold cream from Vichy".

4Chicken Tikka Masala

Credit: Toa Heftiba

A familiar yet exotic name, Chicken Tikka Masala is a dish consisting of roasted marinated chicken chunks in a spiced sauce, often creamy and orange-colored. The dish was created by cooks from South Asia living in Great Britain and is popular in restaurants around the world.

The sauce usually includes tomatoes, cream, coconut cream, and a masala spice mix. The sauce and chicken pieces may be colored orange using foodstuffs such as turmeric, paprika, tomato purée, or food dye. Tikka translates to "roasted", and Massala is "a mix of spices".

5Moussaka

Credit: Becca Tapert

Moussaka is an eggplant or potato-based dish, often including ground meat, which is common in the Balkans and the Middle East, with many local and regional variations.

Many versions have a top layer made of custard or béchamel sauce.

In Greece, the dish is layered and typically served hot. There’s a vegan version that replaces meat with mushrooms or a mix of sautéed onions and rice. And, in Turkey, moussaka consists of thinly sliced and fried eggplant served in a tomato-based meat sauce, warm or at room temperature. The word moussaka itself translates to "cold, or dipped in liquid".

6Ceviche

Credit: silvia trigo

Ceviche is a Peruvian dish consisting of fish or shellfish marinated in citrus and seasonings. The fish is usually cured in lemon or sour lime juice, marinated together with sliced or chopped onion, and served with chopped cilantro. The dressing also includes some local varieties of chili pepper or chili, replaced by mustard in some locations in Central America.

In Peru, it is served with garnishes of boiled root vegetables such as sweet potatoes, cassava, or, very rarely, potatoes, and grains or seeds such as corn, legumes such as zarandaja, fried plantain, seaweed, and lettuce.

7Dim sum

Credit: Mulan Sukrisno

A colorful array of small Chinese dishes traditionally consumed for brunch, Dim Sum is commonly associated with Cantonese cuisine. In the 10th century, travelers frequented Cantonese teahouses for small-portion meals with tea. Cantonese dim sum was originally based on local foods. As dim sum continued to develop, chefs introduced influences and traditions from other regions of China.

Dim Sum has a very broad range of flavors, textures, cooking styles, and ingredients and can be classified into regular items, seasonal offerings, weekly specials, banquet dishes, holiday dishes, house signature dishes, and travel-friendly items, as well as breakfast or lunch foods and late-night snacks. The term Dim Sum translates to "touch the heart."

8Doner kebab

Credit: Viktor Ritsvall

Doner kebab is a dish of Turkish origin made of seasoned meat stacked in the shape of an inverted cone, turned slowly on the rotisserie, next to a vertical cooking element. The operator uses a knife to slice thin shavings from the outer layer of the meat as it cooks.

The sliced meat of a doner kebab may be served on a plate with various accompaniments, stuffed into bread as a sandwich, or wrapped in a thin flatbread such as filo. Doner kebab has become popular around the world as a fast food dish sold by kebab shops, and is often called simply a "kebab." The term, donner kebab itself, translates to "roasted lamb."

9Pad Thai

Credit: Alyssa Kowalski

An exotic dish that has become famous all over the world, Pad Thai is a rice noodle dish fried in a wok and commonly served as a street food. As Thailand's national dish, it is typically made with rice noodles, shrimp, peanuts, scrambled eggs, and bean sprouts.

Many of the ingredients on a Pad Thai dish are provided on the side as condiments, such as red chili pepper, lime wedges, roasted peanuts, bean sprouts, garlic chives, and other miscellaneous fresh vegetables. The term Pad translates to "fried".

10Weiner schnitzel

Credit: Bakd&Raw by Karolin Baitinger

Wiener schnitzel is made of a thin, breaded, pan-fried veal cutlet served without sauce.

It is one of the best-known specialties of Viennese cuisine and one of the national dishes of Austria.

This dish is prepared from veal slices, butterfly cut, lightly pounded flat, slightly salted, and rolled in flour, whipped eggs, and bread crumbs. Finally, the Schnitzel is fried until it is golden yellow. The term Wiener schnitzel translates, literally to "small, breaded, veal cutlet."

Friday Night Wine School - Rhonerama Part II, the Villages and Crus of the Southern Rhone

Fri Jan 17, 2025 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM CST Swirl, 70119

Join us for our attendance-limited, signup-only Friday night tasting! Tastings are held on the back patio with a max of 12 people per time slot.

"Every 13 seconds, a bottle of Rhône Valley AOC wine is enjoyed somewhere in the world."

The Rhône wine region, one of the most ancient wine-growing areas, stretches along the Rhône River to the Mediterranean Sea in the southern part of France. Geologically speaking, it was created during the last ice age as the Rhône Glacier carved its way south from the Swiss Alps through what is now France. Today, the Rhône River meanders southward on this path for over 500 miles, nourishing the region and shaping its landscape and character.

The region is one of the most celebrated and popular wine regions in the world. From the Northern Rhône, where the rugged hills of Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage produce elegant and age-worthy Syrah wines, to the sun-drenched vineyards of the Southern Rhône, where blends of Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah define powerful reds like those of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the Rhône offers an incredible diversity of styles and flavors. Each subregion of the valley showcases its unique terroir, shaped by ancient soils, rolling hills, and a climate that ranges from cool, alpine influences in the north to the warm Mediterranean breeze in the south.

The Southern Rhône is famed for its bold, structured reds and complex blends that have made the valley a powerhouse of French winemaking. Whether you're tasting wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, or the lesser-known but equally intriguing Luberon or Ventoux, you’ll be treated to a true reflection of the land, where the mountains meet the Mediterranean, and each glass of wine tells a story of the people, places, and centuries-old practices that have shaped this exceptional region.

As with all wine regions in France, the Rhone has a hierarchical system of qualifying quality. From the ripe and welcoming Cotes du Rhone AOC to the more structured Cotes du Rhone Villages and finally, the famous Cru wines, exploring the region can be a complicated but delicious journey. In our "Rhonerama" series, we'll break down the AOC systems requirements as we taste very distinct wines from the area.

The Villages and Crus are the heart of the region such as the famous AOC's of Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Tavel, Lirac, Rasteau, Cairanne, Beaumes de Venise and Vinsobres. Join Nicole Todaro as we take a road trip around the area, tasting the similarities and differences of these captivating wines.

-All ticket sales are final.

-We will hold our tastings outside on the patio from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM on Fridays weather permitting, if it rains we move inside to the back of the shop.

-Your $5 tasting fee is refunded when you purchase a bottle of wine from the tasting. Limit 1 refund per bottle per customer.

-Please arrive 5 minutes early for your time slot, as we may not be able to move you to another spot.

-No waiting in line for your taste of wine in a plastic cup and snippet of info. During your time slot, you will have the presenter's undivided attention as you learn about and taste the wines from Riedel glassware.

-When your tasting is over, you can browse and shop or enjoy a glass or bottle at our indoor and outdoor tables.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.

The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.

Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.

And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.

Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.

Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Super Bowl LIX pre-game show features all New Orleans and Louisiana musicians

The NFL announced on Thanksgiving that the Super Bowl LIX pre-game telecast will spotlight singers and musicians from New Orleans and Louisiana.

Jon Batiste, who grew up in Kenner and attended St. Augustine High School and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, will sing the national anthem in the Caesars Superdome ahead of kickoff on Feb. 9.

Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, who grew up in Treme, will team up with contemporary Christian singer and Lafayette native Lauren Daigle to perform "America the Beautiful." They have previously made guest appearances with one another onstage and on recordings.

And contemporary R&B singer Ledisi, who was born and raised in New Orleans before moving to California, will perform "Lift Every Voice and Sing."

“We’re honored to work with this year’s pregame lineup to celebrate the rich musical legacy of New Orleans and the entire state,” said Seth Dudowsky, head of music at the NFL, in a news release. "The Super Bowl is a rare moment to unite fans around the world, and this year’s performers will bring the energy, soul and vibrant sounds of the region to a global stage, as we kickoff Super Bowl LIX with a celebration to remember.”

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.

A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.

Courtesy of Jefferson Parish

The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.

The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.

Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.

"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
