Town of Halifax Increases Municipal Budgets

On Wednesday, July 29 a Special Town Hall meeting occurred to discuss changes to its upcoming Annual Budget for 2027. In the meeting it was learned that almost $700,000 would be returned from Halifax Elementary's budget, and that the excess funds would be put back into other municipal agencies. This includes the $140,000 for fire department wages, $150,000 for police department wages, and $50,000 for department of aging wages. The return of funds to other agencies will allow for much needed financial relief for various departments, which will help Halifax in the year to come.

Historical Tidbit:

Halifax Garden Company

1489e70c-292f-4fca-97a9-3701feb82d42 image

As one drives down Holmes Street heading North toward Pembroke, there isn't much to announce to the world that at one time the Halifax Garden Company sat on the West side of the street just before Garden Road and the railroad tracks.

The Halifax Garden Company was founded in 1905 by A. C. Burrage. It consisted of a total of 18 greenhouses, the largest being 300' x 40' with 17 smaller greenhouses equaling a total of 154,000 square feet of covered ground.

Roses were the major crop of this business with an annual cut of about 2 million buds a year. These hybrid roses were shipped throughout the world. Also grown were carnations, orchids and gardenias. It took about 450,000 gallons of oil to heat the greenhouses annually. The business closed in 1979.

This site today is where you will find the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) station. Home to 402 parking spaces. The only reminder of the Garden Company is that the way into the MBTA parking lot is named Garden Road.

Pictured is an arial view of the Halifax Garden Company. You can see Route 36 (Holmes Street), Garden Road and the Railroad tracks.

Halifax Police Department D.A.R.E. Camp Recap

From July 27 to July 31 2026, the Halifax Police Department and Halifax students took part in this year's D.A.R.E. Camp from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Silver Lake Regional High School, 260 Pembroke St, Kingston MA.

A free program provided by the District Attorney's office, Plymouth County Police Chiefs and local School Resource Officers, this camp allowed students entering 5th and 6th grade to learn decision-making skills and build confidence in a fun and safe environment.

During the program, the students participated in the D.A.R.E. program, educational activities, sports & games, arts & crafts and got their own camp t-shirts.

On August 3, 2026, the Halifax Police Department posted, "We’d like to look back at [this year's] D.A.R.E. Camp and show how great of a time everyone had! We are so thankful to have been able to take part in such an awesome program and week. Thank you to all the campers, volunteers, sponsors and everyone else who came together to create another memorable week. Can’t wait for next year!"

At the conclusion of the camp, a graduation ceremony was held for campers and their families. An incredible way to bring the community's youth together while also creating important learning opportunities, this year's D.A.R.E. Camp was a definite success!

Living Your Best Life

“There is no greater gift you can give or receive than to honor your calling. It’s why you were born. And how you become most truly alive.” ~ Oprah Winfrey

“We can’t save the world by playing by the rules, because the rules have to be changed.” ~ Greta Thunberg

“Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.” ~ Robert F. Kennedy

“You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.” ~ Joe Lewis

“The purpose of life, after all, is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

I used to think journaling was a waste: "Why spend this glorious day pondering? "

But then I remember other days wasted; unhappy, without purpose, money or thinking I had no options. Days I felt unloved, face in my pillow, crying in frustration. Now I know, journaling is much better.

On days I journal, I feel those emotions, journal them, see and understand them. Then are able to re-frame the narrative if necessary, creating a growth moment.

I wish you all a fabulous week. Loving yourself, giving yourself the time you need, and living your best life. ~ Jacquie
