BCPS receives nearly $9,500 "Nourishing Our Youth" donation from Giant Food
Funds will be used to address childhood hunger
| |
Baltimore County Public Schools has earned $9,448.19 to support its food programs through Giant Food's "Nourishing Our Youth" initiative.
Through this year’s program, Giant customers and associates raised more than $292,894 to address the issue of childhood hunger throughout public-school districts in the communities Giant serves. From June 29 to July 31, Giant Food invited its customers to "round up" at the register to support local school districts’ food and meal programs.
The funds BCPS received will be used to feed students in ways such as launching food pantries, purchasing kitchen/cafeteria equipment, or sending home extra weekend meals.

Summer Stories: FFFCU offers Student Professional Discovery Days
Helping young people explore the world of finance
| | |
In late June, teachers and students at Dundalk High School’s Career Exploration Camp also made the trek to First Financial Federal Credit Union’s (FFFCU) headquarters in northern Baltimore County.
For the next four hours, the group met with credit union executives and professionals, everyone from CEO Eric Church, who greeted each group virtually, to representatives from the institution’s human resources, innovation and strategy, lending, accounting, risk management, information technology, and information security offices, among others.
And by the time the FFFCU Student Professional Discovery Day was done, the students had a lot to think about over summer break. A new Summer Stories blog post reveals more of the story about this Discovery Day and the credit union's work with other BCPS schools.
| | There's still time to share your summer story | | |
Every summer since 2018, BCPS has invited its students, teachers, and staff to share stories about their summer activities and adventures on the BCPS blog. The invitation to contribute to the Summer Stories series is extended again this year. To submit a blog post or suggest a story idea, please write to communications@bcps.org. We want to know about your summer jobs/internships/externships, vacations, creative projects, competitions, camps, and more!
| | Summer Food Service Program concludes this week | | |
To reach as many children (ages 2-18) as possible, the Summer Food Service program, managed by the BCPS Office of Food and Nutrition Services, offers several ways to access free summer meals through Friday, August 15.
-
Summer Meals TO-GO: Families can register to pick up summer meals at Carroll Manor or Kingsville elementary schools or Hereford High School. This week, registered families can pick up boxes containing five breakfast meals and five lunches per child.
-
Organized program sites: Many summer programs (including camps, day cares, sports teams, and religious groups) have registered to have free breakfast and/or lunch meals delivered to their sites in Baltimore County.
-
Baltimore County Public Library branches: Sixteen branches of Baltimore County Public Library are serving free lunches through Friday. These meals must be eaten on site. The list of participating branches and their mealtimes is available online.

In three of the books recommended this week by our wonderful colleagues in the Baltimore County Public Library Collection Department, the main characters take on daunting challenges: trying to find a missing mother during World War II; waking up to find the family's lakeside cottage trapped under a giant dome; and surviving alone as a young teen during a smallpox epidemic and the American Revolutionary War. While the fourth book is much lighter, its protagonist (a pencil with an eraser as a sidekick) is also on a quest – to search an empty school and find a pencil sharpener.
Please remember to stop by your local library branch to participate in the summer reading program, have them put together a Be Surprised Bundle for you, and take part in their many activities.

"Self-Portrait" by Logann S., Loch Raven Technical Academy, is featured in the 2025 Middle School Art Exhibition currently on view at BCPS headquarters/Greenwood in Building A.
Artist statement:
I used the grid method to line up my proportions on my reference photo and my final draft. The grid helped me see where the facial features go in the drawing and how they looked to make my self-portrait more accurate. I know my proportions are correct because when I look at my self-portrait, it looks like I 'm looking in a mirror, and when I take a picture of the drawing next to me, I can see the resemblance. I used all five values to make the depth in the drawing look more like the shadows in my reference photo. I used value 5 for my hair and value 1 for the writing on my shirt I was wearing that day. I am most proud of the facial features that I drew because when I look at the drawing, I see myself in the paper. I wish I didn't mess with the eyes so they would stay the same as they were a few weeks ago when I first drew them. A few days ago, I was playing with the value and correcting the proportions. But when I did that, the eyes weren't symmetrical, so I had to erase the eyes and redo them both. But I like them now, and I'm proud of this entire picture I drew because it's a crazy improvement of what I did in 5th grade, and I'm happy.
