September 18th, 2026

Hello Friends & Neighbors,

I am grateful to be able to reach you through this medium.

Community engagement is at the forefront of my mission to provide resources, events, and support for our residents and businesses. My motto of "Putting You First...Keeps Us First" will continue to be my guide. I look forward to engaging with you more in the future!  Please take a look at the various events, projects, programs and share with your contacts.

September is National Recovery Month, a time to recognize the strength of individuals working toward recovery from substance use and mental health challenges, while also honoring the families, professionals, and community organizations who walk alongside them. This month, I encourage anyone who may be struggling to know that help is available and that seeking support is a sign of strength. Whether through treatment, counseling, peer support, faith communities, or trusted loved ones, recovery can take many forms—and every step forward matters. As a community, we can all play a role by reducing stigma, sharing resources, listening with compassion, and creating an environment where people feel supported in asking for help. When we support recovery, we strengthen individuals, families, and our entire community.

I invite you to join me for the 7th Annual Black British Heritage Celebration on Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 6–11 PM at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. The evening will feature a red carpet cocktail hour, dinner, awards, and live entertainment as we recognize the achievements and contributions of the Black British community.

Tickets are $40 per person and include complimentary valet parking. Guests can also take part in our Best Dressed Competition for a chance to win two JetBlue tickets.

Seating is limited, so purchase your tickets today.

Division Spotlight: Broward Addiction Recovery Center

Providing Hope, Help and a Path to Recovery

In recognition of National Recovery Month, I am highlighting the Broward Addiction Recovery Center (BARC) and the important role it plays in helping residents overcome substance use challenges and move toward healthier, more stable lives.

For more than 50 years, BARC has provided compassionate and confidential services for adults age 18 and older. Through individual, group and family therapy, its experienced professionals help residents access treatment, build support systems and take meaningful steps toward long-term recovery.

With more than 4,000 people served each year, BARC remains a vital resource for individuals and families throughout Broward County. If you or someone you know is struggling, I encourage you to learn more about the services available. Recovery is possible, and help is here.

Flashback Friday: Celebrating Hispanic Heritage at Latin Nights in 2024

For this week’s Flashback Friday, I’m looking back at Latin Nights 2024, a Hispanic Heritage Month celebration I hosted at the Miramar Cultural Center. The evening featured Latin music, dancing, great food, and a special awards ceremony recognizing outstanding community contributions. Among those honored was longtime journalist Eliott Rodriguez, with CBS News Miami’s Nikiya Carrero serving as emcee for the celebration. As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, moments like these remind us of the rich culture, accomplishments, and traditions that continue to strengthen our community.
