A Fishy Day on the Coudery River
With blue sky overhead, a clean flowing river all around us, and a refreshing break from summer humidity, it’s no wonder that statements like, “what a beautiful day,” and “it just doesn’t get much better than this,” kept slipping out unbidden.

Broken
"Did you notice that Carson's alymeri is broken on this side?" Despite Mollie's calm, quiet demeanor, her words stopped me in my tracks.

Mollie wore a thick set of leather welding gloves as she restrained Carson on the table for a health check and beak trim. I worked quickly, starting by clipping the hawk's overgrown talons. This simple task was made difficult by her incredible grip strength; strong tendons popped in the toes as I used all my might to pry them open.

A Blister Beetle
My father and I had spent the morning with backs arched downward and eyes darting across the forest floor in search of edible fungi. Like other mushroom pilgrimages of late, the mosquitoes clung on to their summer glory leading us to perspire underneath our otherwise unseasonable outerwear. Our normally observant natures gave way to hasty harvesting as more and more mosquitoes closed in. But in the midst of all those mosquitoes another insect caught my eye--an abdominally plump oil beetle.
