Farewell to the Goats

littles-and-goats-2026-scaled image

Our goat visitors returned to the MidAtlantic Homestead Farm yesterday. Grade 3 accompanied the goats, saw where they live, and met their caretakers and fellow farm animals. This is a great augmentation to the Grade 3 curricular focus on agriculture and understanding the ways humans have lived with, and been sustained by, animals throughout history.

It was such a delight to have the four goats living with us on campus since Labor Day. Students of all ages (from our youngest seedlings to our high school garden interns) were able to spend time with these gentle creatures and learn from and about them.

The community was essential to making this project happen by helping create the living space for the goats and by visiting and appreciating them. We even managed to have a goat yoga session last week before their departure.

The goats have left us with warm hearts and the gift of a well fertilized patch of our growing permaculture orchard!

Grade 8 NYC Adventure

From Micah Bump, Alum/G8/G12 Parent

Great Expectations Met as WWS Takes Broadway!

From the classroom to the bright lights of Broadway! Last Saturday, WWS eighth graders, families, and friends traveled to New York City to see The Outsiders, the Broadway musical based on S. E. Hinton’s beloved novel. Students are reading the book in their English class, making this theatre experience an exciting opportunity to see the story come alive on stage.

The acting, choreography, special effects (fire and rain on stage!), and live music brought the rivalry between the Greasers and Socs to a whole new dimension. The show was bookended by two classic meals and a stroll through Times Square. It was a Broadway success that gave our eighth graders plenty to bring back to their classroom discussions.

Stay gold, WWS eighth grade!

Upper School Service Learning at Mt Zion and Female Union Band Society Cemeteries

From Bonnie McClelland, Upper School Coordinator

Grades 7-12 visited Mt. Zion - Female Union Band Society (FUBS) Cemeteries in Georgetown last Thursday morning. We toured and learned about the cemeteries and the history of Georgetown from our host Lisa Fager, Executive Director of Black Georgetown, followed by some grounds-keeping work to honor the ancestors. Mt. Zion-FUBS has been featured in articles in the NY Times and Washington Post, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is designated a UNESCO Routes of Enslaved Peoples project site. It is an honor to be invited. We are grateful to Lisa Fager for this opportunity, and we look forward to returning in the spring.

High School Girls Soccer

From Coach Micah Bump

A Strong Start for WWS HS Girls Soccer!

The WWS high school girls soccer team is finding its stride! After a slow first half in the season opener against a strong Field School squad, the Red-Tailed Hawks rallied to meet their second-half goal: playing their opponents evenly through the final whistle. That determination set the tone for an exciting early season.

The highlight came in game two, when the Hawks traveled to UDC’s campus to face the Burke Bengals for their homecoming game. An enthusiastic crowd, streamers, pom-poms, a dance team, and a DJ created a raucous atmosphere, with the Burke student body eager for a win. But their celebration ran straight into a determined WWS defense and unrelenting offense! The Hawks built a commanding 4–0 lead and secured a 4–2 victory—a complete team effort and a confidence boost heading into an important stretch of the PVAC season.

Last week, the Hawks battled a tough Don Bosco team to a tie, creating plenty of opportunities to claim the win. This week brings important matchups against McLean and Sandy Spring Friends, with PVAC playoff positioning on the line.

Next week, we’ll celebrate seniors Anna, Elena, Hannah, Kenzie, and Zoe for their leadership, dedication, and contributions throughout their time in WWS high school soccer. Come out, cheer them on, and help us give our seniors the recognition they deserve.

GO HAWKS!

Help Spread the Word!

Many thanks to those who have responded since this was shared last week!

We thought we'd run it for one more week in case you missed it, or as a reminder that you can help! People who hear about our school from current and alum families are more likely to enroll than families who find us through most other sources!

Director of Communications & Marketing

How You Can Help

Do you have a relationship with a potential feeder school?

We are always looking to strengthen our relationships with area schools that end at some point before high school. If you came to WWS from another school, or have some other connection, you can help by:

  • Sharing WWS materials with the school staff and/or parents
  • Checking to see if they have an outplacement event where you could share about WWS
  • Sharing your connection with our Enrollment Office

Is there a bulletin board in your favorite coffee shop, park, library, or bookstore?

If so, please pick up a flyer at the front desk about our upcoming tours to help spread the word! If you can't stop by the desk, contact Alia Goodyear.

Do you have a yard with a good spot for a school sign?

If you would like to promote the school with a beautiful yard sign designed by alum parent Lisa Catalone, please contact Alia Goodyear.

And, please share information about our upcoming enrollment events on any relevant listservs to which you belong!

Five-Day Creative Speech & Storytelling Retreat in Costa Rica

Led by Debbie Spitulnik, Former WWS Faculty & Alum Parent

February 12–18, 2027

In the cloud forest of Monteverde, we will spend five days immersed in storytelling, Creative Speech, and the living landscape around us.

Using the Four Pillars of Creative Speech™ (Imagination, Movement, Sound, and Breath), we will explore how a story comes to life through its speaker and how our own inner capacities shape the way we meet our listeners.

The cloud forest itself will become part of our study. We will listen to the movement of water and wind, live into the gestures and rhythms of the landscape, observe color, form, and atmosphere, and experience silence. We will bring these into our work with language and story.

This is more than a storytelling workshop. It is a sojourn for the soul: a time to deepen your artistic practice, renew your relationship with your own voice, and experience storytelling in conversation with one of the world's extraordinary ecosystems.

We are all storytellers. This retreat is for all who seek to deepen their connection and kinship to nature, their inner self, and the spoken word.
