A Way With Watercolor

my Favorite Watercolorists

Artist: Sabrina Garrasi, Conceptual, Subject Area: Landscape, Shape: Non-Objective, Design: Simplified, Brushwork: Painterly, Space: Shallow, Color: Schematic / Conceptual.

What we are really recovering from childhood in those moments of discovery and exaltation is a way of looking at the world — looking for a glimpse of some small truth that illuminates the interconnectedness of all things, looking and being wonder-smitten by what we see.

- Maria Popova

This month I would like to introduce you to some of the watercolor artists who have influenced my growth as an artist. I’d like to share them with you as an example of what’s possible in a single medium.

Watercolor is difficult to master and each of these artists has gone beyond technical competence - beyond descriptive imitation of pictorial facts. I admire their ability to synthesize the world around them with their private, inner worlds. Each has developed a completely personal and idiosyncratic way of using watercolor to capture the things they find beguiling in this world. Their work feels like a discovery of something wonderous and even exalted.

Watercolor became my favorite medium the first time I touched good paint to good paper when I was 16 years old. I love the way water interacts with paper and allows light to reflect back through the paint, the way paint crawls and expands into wet paper, the way you can layer thin veils of color over each other. It requires a different way of thinking and working than all other media.

I am inspired by these artists and how they use the same tools I do but get so much closer to visual poetry.

This list is incomplete by definition. How could I ever show you all that’s possible using watercolor? The art and artists you will meet below are here because I like their work and they’ve had an influence on me. They are in no particular order. There is a brief description of each artist and a link to more information about them if you’re curious to learn more. If you click on an image you like, it should pop up on your screen in a larger size so you can see more detail. Many offer instructional videos for you to spend more time with them and their technique.

Some of these artists may be more famous, but none of them are “better” than any of the others. If I left out one of your favorites please let me know, I’d love to hear more about why they inspire you.

I’m going to use the same system I used last month to evaluate the way they personalize their work.

Winslow Homer (1836-1910)

"You will see," said American artist Winslow Homer, "in the future I will live by my watercolors." From his early forays into pastoral landscapes to his more mature works encompassing the maritime scenes for which he is best known, Homer's watercolors are most remarkable for their reverence of nature and the people who thrive within its conditions―sketches that are both quaint and sublime in scope”

John Singer Sargent (1856–1925)

John Singer Sargent was an American expatriate artist, considered the "leading portrait painter of his generation" for his evocations of Belle Époque and Edwardian-era luxury. He created roughly 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolors, as well as countless sketches and charcoal drawings. His oeuvre documents worldwide travel, from Venice to the Tyrol, Corfu, Capri, Spain, the Middle East, Montana, Maine, and Florida. Born in Florence to American parents, he was trained there and Paris before moving to London, living most of his life in Europe

Andrew Wyeth (1917 - 2009)

Andrew Wyeth was 20 when he burst onto the New York art scene. His solo exhibition of works at Macbeth Gallery in 1937 made headlines. It was a sold-out exhibition of watercolors inspired by Maine, a place of deep personal significance to the artist. The Wyeth family is part of the fabric of Maine and Wyeth had spent summers there since childhood. A critic for Art in America wrote in one of many euphoric reviews of the artist's coming-out exhibition, "Wyeth uses his brush with a really almost spectacular freedom." This energetic and unbridled approach to watercolor launched Wyeth's career and fame.

Charles Burchfield (1893-1967)

In every leaf, shadow and breeze, Charles Burchfield heard the silent music of nature waiting to be seen. Charles Ephraim Burchfield (1893–1967) was an American painter whose visionary watercolors gave voice to the hidden rhythms and spirit of the natural world. Born in Ashtabula Harbor, Ohio, Burchfield began in high school jotting poetic descriptions on the back of his paintings. This was an early sign of his passion to capture nature’s intangible emotions. The largest collection of Burchfield's paintings, archives and journals are in the collection of the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo.

Sabrina Garrasi

Sabrina Garrasi is an Italian artist. Her work explores the uncontrollable nature of dreams and illusions. The same subject, explored over time, delves into the oneiric dimension and suspension of reality. The abstract shapes seem to convey strange meanings or ancestral thoughts.

The artist abandons an initial concept by creating deconstructed images in an apparently random path. Using a variety of media, including ink, acrylics, and pigments, she builds layers, erases, scratches, and overwrites. These layers and pigment spots create intersections of color with varying focus and depth where light is applied, revised, and repainted. Each painting is a personal narrative, a portal to artist's metaphysical vision.

Janet Fish (1938-2025)

Throughout her over fifty-year career, Janet Fish committed herself to the exploration of color and light in her paintings, pastels, and watercolors.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1938, Fish received her BA from Smith College in 1960 and her MFA from Yale University in 1963. At Yale, her fellow students included Chuck Close, Nancy Graves, Robert Mangold, Sylvia Plimack Mangold, and Richard Serra, a tight-knit group who formed an intense, ambitious, competitive group that motivated one another to develop and defend their work. There, Fish was taught Abstract Expressionism, the predominant painting style of the time to show light interacting with a mixture of objects, flitting between them, setting off visual echoes and counterpoints, and generating an overt, symphonious, flowing movement.”

Quote:

This is what you shall do:

Love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown or to any man or number of men, go freely with powerful uneducated persons and with the young and with the mothers of families, read these leaves in the open air every season of every year of your life, re-examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul,

and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency not only in its words but in the silent lines of its lips and face and between the lashes of your eyes and in every motion and joint of your body.

Private Art Retreats

A personalized experience, full of art and discovery, for those who….

  • are traveling alone, or with a couple of friends
  • would like a much more flexible, and free experience, and lots of fun, too, tailored exactly to your needs, interests, and experience level
  • may want to combine painting with organized discovery trips and tours and really get to know the ‘real’ South Florida
  • would like to book in for a shorter or longer time than most workshops
  • don’t want to have to bring a mountain of supplies in their luggage

Painting Joy

Created especially for artistic women in the third stage of life who are dissatisfied with their artwork and want to have more fun connecting with themselves and others. In this three-day watercolor workshop, we experiment with visual cues that inspire joy, discover personal symbols that resonate, and provide ways to bring more effervescence into our lives and art.

Please recommend any venues you know that might be interested in hosting this workshop in 2026 or 2027.

I am also happy to teach this as a private retreat or for a small group in my studio.

I would very much appreciate your help in getting the next booking.

Schedule a time to discuss how I can collaborate with you to build a portfolio that will give your student the greatest chance for success.

Art Workshops, Critiques & Presentations

Invite me to present or lead a workshop for your school, club, or guild.

I can customize a program for your event or present my skills programs on composition, color theory, drawing faces, coordinating light/shadow or understanding the cues for depth. I am available for judging, confidence-building critiques and recorded tutorials.

Improve Your Artist Statement

If you would like to delve more deeply into your own inner questions and clarify your thoughts as you create an artist statement for your website, a gallery show, a sponsor, or another project, please reach out, and let’s talk. I have helped many students write compelling statements for AP Art, college applications, and competitions.

Select one of the artists above to invite into your practice. Choose a technique they use to play with in your sketchbook. Maybe, it’s Keith Crown and his upside down mountains and trees and distorted perspective. Maybe, it’s Linda Kemp and negative painting… have some fun trying something you wouldn’t ordinarily do. Many of these artists have videos demonstrating their technnique.
