We asked our Graduating Fellows to share some helpful tips for our rising seniors as they prepare for senior year.
Here's what they had to say:
Through MTB I was able to learn about the importance of being up to date with deadlines and being informed about all the opportunities that a student has. I really got to connect with the other people and see different POVs.
I learned that throwing yourself out there even if it means failure is one of the best things. I wish I knew how heavy senior year would be in the first months and how it’s so important to do the college essay and supplements way ahead of time to hand in the best version of yourself.
I have learned how to be more organized with my life and my schedule. I’ve also learned the importance in prioritizing time for myself. I wish I had looked more into the careers that I was interested in instead of doing it at the beginning of senior year.
I have learned A LOT from More Than Bootstraps. Trust me this program is such a necessity and guides you step by step through the process of going to college. I’ve learned to reach out for help even if it’s too embarrassing or if I was too afraid. I wish I would have known to not let anyone or anything keep me back from pursuing higher education. Apply for that Ivy League even if you’re not sure. Apply to that out-of-state school. Apply to those scholarships. Apply yourself to push harder for a brighter future.
What I have learned is that prioritizing yourself is key, especially when beginning your college application process. What I wish I would have known when finishing my junior year is that the most important thing you can do for yourself is spending time with yourself and loved ones.
I have learned that there is no shame in asking for help. Doing so makes your college preparation experience less stressful and less lonely. It's important to surround yourself with other individuals who are also going through similar hardships or experiences. MTB and my mentor have helped me immensely and made the end of my high school journey run smoothly.
I have learned that we will always have issues and problems but there will always be issues, it’s the way you go about them and with MTB, you will have a better chance of solving those issues and having guidance throughout your last two years of high school.
I learned to be organized and to take my journey one step at a time. It is important to be focused on your future, while also being there in your present. I wish I had finished writing my college essay before I went into my senior year.
I have learned that even the smallest milestone is worth celebrating, that you have an outstanding support system (MTB) behind you rooting for you. Use the amazing resources available to you. Not procrastinating goes a long way, do your tasks and be on top of your schedule not just with MTB but also with your studies. Most importantly, believe in yourself and make smart choices.
