Celebrating Earth Day: A Message from Tara Pike

For three decades, the Rebel Recycling program’s mission has been to provide UNLV with comprehensive waste reduction, recycling, and resource management. It also seeks to enhance awareness and participation in campus recycling efforts. This program began in 1995 with the completion of my undergraduate thesis and a successful presentation to the UNLV Board of Regents that granted initial funding. At its inception, I was its only full-time employee.

Today, Rebel Recycling is bigger than I ever imagined. It has solidified into a cornerstone of UNLV culture, promoting not just recycling but also sustainability in all facets of university life.

While there’s always more work to be done, this year we’re celebrating our progress with an Earth Day recycling event led by the Sustainability Partners of Southern Nevada (SPSNV). UNLV is proud to be a member of SPSNV, and I encourage everyone to participate!

Earth Day Recycling with SPSNV

When: April 19, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Where: 330 S Valley View

What can I bring? You can recycle anything on the accepted items list.

For more details about the event and SPSNV, visit their website.

Moving forward, UNLV demonstrates a continued commitment to recycling, sustainability, and total carbon neutrality by our 100th anniversary. We’re working toward this via our Climate Action Plan (Rebel CAP) and our campus-wide facilities sustainability initiatives.

Every single person at UNLV can make a direct impact to protect our planet during Earth Month and as part of a lasting change. Our community thrives when we act in service to others and as stewards of a better future. Let’s do this together.

Big smile,

Tara Pike

Campus and Community Partners Get Hands-On Risk Mitigation Tips

fter renovations to Greenspun College of Urbain Affairs lobby at UNLV

High winds, floods, fires, and earthquakes are all risks we face living in the desert southwest. It’s Risk Management & Safety’s (RMS) job to stay informed on the latest and most effective ways to protect our people and property from these unpredictable events.

On March 25 and 26, RMS partnered with UNLV’s insurance provider, FM Global Insurance (FMI), to bring their traveling risk prevention truck to campus. FMI is composed of engineers who use their expertise to research answers to questions such as, “How do you contain a lithium-ion battery fire?” or “How do we prevent gas leaks during an earthquake?” They test possible solutions and scenarios in their New England laboratory. Once solutions are proven and patented, they share their findings with their clients. The Risk Prevention truck is one way they bring their latest inventions and learnings to the masses. Equipped with interactive stations that simulate actual disaster events on a smaller scale, the truck also includes video footage taken in their laboratory.

More than 150 representatives from throughout the university, other NSHE institutions, and the surrounding community, including Clark County School District, the Las Vegas Raiders, and the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority, came to the parking lot behind the Campus Services Building to learn about FMI’s risk mitigation recommendations.

Thank you to the RMS team for leading this important safety initiative for our campuses and community.

Spotlight on Service

In October 2024, we distributed our annual Business Affairs customer service survey. The responses included a number of accolades for our hard-working Business Affairs teams. Here are some words of appreciation for Risk Management & Safety:

“RMS is a fabulously hard-working and fun team! Thank you for keeping us all safe.”

“They have been AMAZING to work with. Always kind and willing to help find answers.”

“Good safety training and pleasant staff.”

Thank you to this incredible team, and keep up the good work!

New Neighbors: School of Public Health Organizations Now Located in CSB

Since last fall, Planning & Construction (P&C) has been hard at work renovating the second floor of the Campus Services Building (CSB) for its new occupants - the School of Public Health (SPH) centers. CSB rooms 229 through 235 now house three SPH community-facing organizations and a state agency working toward the same goal:

*a state agency partnered and co-located with UNLV’s SPH centers

Why the Move?

These moves have been a series of adjustments as each School of Public Health center establishes the best way it can serve the community inside and outside of UNLV. NICRP previously resided in CSB before moving to the Gateway building to be co-located with other SPH coalitions. But as their work has grown, these entities needed more space, especially space that is more accessible to community members. The four centers’ work is closely related, making the move to one centralized location within CSB a logical choice.

These centers advocate for at-risk groups in Nevada, seeking to improve health equity and eliminate health-related disparities across vulnerable and marginalized communities. They perform evaluations, needs assessments, research, and collect local data to determine what’s currently needed to improve public health. Their work is distinct and intersectional.

Intersectionality refers to the interconnectedness of social categories and how that connectedness affects an individual’s experience in life. For example, a child who is also a minority would be at risk of the different health disparities experienced by both children and minorities, making the research of all four health centers relevant. Intersectional research is more complete, and at large, everyone benefits from the results of shared information and knowledge.

If you’d like to know more about any of the public health organizations and their work, please visit their webpages.

What’s in the New Space?

As might be expected of a space for public health centers, much of the second floor redesign focused on wellness. The new offices and workspaces are spacious and invite in as much natural light as possible, and it’s clear that comfort and privacy for employees and community guests was a main consideration. There are also several new meeting rooms—including a large training room that is reservable by anyone in CSB through the calendar! With its current setup, it holds 32 people, but with additional seating, it has a max capacity of 65.

Perhaps the coolest new feature of the renovation is the Wellness Room. This space is a spot for their community visitors and employees of the public health centers to take a break, rest, stretch—or have a comfortable space to connect with one another.

What’s Next?

The community-facing public health centers in CSB are planning two open houses for early June: one for the SPH and other employees located in the CSB, and a second for community partners and the UNLV campus. Curious to see the new space and meet your new neighbors before then? Swing by and say hi!
