Invitation to Participate in a Study on the Impact of NNA

The NNA-CO is conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the Navigating the New Arctic Initiative to better understand its impact and legacy. Anyone age 18 or older who was part of or closely associated with an NNA-funded project is invited to participate through an online survey, virtual focus group, or individual virtual interview. Findings from the study will help document lessons from NNA and inform future opportunities for convergence and co-production research in the Arctic and beyond.

The survey can be found here. If you would like to participate in a focus group or interview please fill out this form to indicate your interest, and a member of the NNA-CO team will reach out to you about scheduling.

The survey is open through December 15, 2026 and opportunities to participate in virtual focus groups and interviews will continue through the fall and winter. For any questions reach out to noor.johnson@colorado.edu.

Navigating the New Arctic Undergraduate Research Experience

During the 2026 Navigating the New Arctic (NNA) Annual Meeting, seven students from universities across Alaska participated in the fall 2026 cohort of the NNA Undergraduate Research Experience. This cohort included three students from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, two students from Prince William Sound College, and one from the University of Alaska Anchorage. Students completed projects exploring a wide range of topics, including permafrost thaw and soil conditions, classification models for river freeze up stages, disparities in rural Arctic science participation, and mariculture in Valdez, Alaska. Students spent a week in Fairbanks, Alaska where they attended workshops focused on professional development and attended sessions at the annual meeting.

You can find more information about students here, including links to their presentations. If you or someone you know might be interested in a future NNA REU opportunity, you can sign up here for application reminders.

EOS Article: “A Snow Machine Traverse Connects Arctic Coastal Communities”

In Spring 2026, the expedition, called Collaborative Observations of the Arctic Shorezone: A Traverse for Knowledge Exchange (COAST-X 2026), completed a 2000 mile snow machine (snowmobile) trip from Bethel to Utqiaġvik, Alaska, stopping at more than a dozen communities along the way. Led by University of Alaska Fairbanks researcher Ben Jones, the overall goal was to better understand ongoing changes associated with thawing permafrost and terrain subsidence that are undermining houses, roads, water and sewer systems, and other municipal infrastructure. The expedition grew largely out of the NNA Project known as the Alaska Coastal Cooperative for Co-producing Transformative Ideas and Opportunities in the North (ACTION), which calls for convergent research bringing together natural, built, and social systems to better understand Arctic change and its local and global effects. Read more about the expedition in the EOS Article here.

Call for Abstracts: Joint (AC)³ - MOSAiC Conference 2027

The call for abstracts is now open for the Joint (AC)³–MOSAiC Conference 2027 (JAMC27). The JAMC27 conference will be taking place in Leipzig, Germany from March 8–12, 2027. This conference will bring together the international polar research community for multidisciplinary scientific exchange under the theme “Drivers and Impacts of a Changing Arctic.” Arctic researchers are invited to submit abstracts, including those not previously involved in MOSAiC or (AC)³. Abstract submissions will be open through November 2nd. You can find more information here.

Join the Upcoming PSECCO Community Call

November 12, 2026 | 2:00 pm ET | 12:00 pm MT | 10:00 am AKT

Following last month's announcement about the next phase of the Polar Science Early Career Community Office (PSECCO), PSECCO will host a community call to share updates on its plans for the coming two years and gather feedback from members of the polar early career community.

During the call, participants will have the opportunity to share perspectives on emerging community needs and learn more about PSECCO's future focus areas, including continued support for mentorship opportunities, regional hub development, and online professional development programming. Updates will also be provided on changes to PSECCO's scope of work and the activities that will shape the community office over the next two years. Register for the PSECCO Community Call here.

ArcticNet's Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) 2026

ArcticNet’s 2026 Annual Scientific Meeting will take place in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, during December 7-10, 2026. This meeting brings researchers, students, knowledge holders, policymakers, and other Arctic stakeholders to share current research and discuss issues affecting the North. The meeting will feature scientific sessions, networking opportunities, cultural activities, and interdisciplinary discussions designed to strengthen connections between research, communities, and decision-makers. Registration is open until December 5, 2026. You can find more information here.
