Member Spotlight: East Jersey Old Town Village

Have you ever wondered what Middlesex County was like more than 250 years ago? History buffs can get a glimpse of the past at East Jersey Old Town Village in Piscataway.

Located in Johnson Park, the Village features 16 reconstructed and replica 18th and 19th century structures that represent farm and merchant communities once found in the Raritan Valley. Visitors can enjoy a free, self-guided tour to see the site and meet the historical interpreters that bring it to life.

“The Village is a unique historical site because it interprets a great swath of Central Jersey history from both the 18th and 19th centuries,” explained Matthew Stroh, Program Manager at the Division of History & Historic Preservation. “Our historical interpreters offer visitors a real life look into historic jobs and trades.”

Visitors can get a real feel for early American life all year round as they tour the Indian Queen Tavern, the Farley Blacksmith Shop, the Williamson Wheelwright Shop, the Smalleytown Schoolhouse, the Three Mile Run Church and homes of early settlers. Historical interpreters are on-site from April through October including a blacksmith, a tailor and a stone carver.

The Village is open Wednesdays-Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. It also offers a wide variety of family-friendly seasonal programming like reenactments of Revolutionary War battles, holiday programs with wagon rides and cider, and an interactive performance of Sleepy Hollow during the Halloween season.

East Jersey Old Town Village is operated by the Middlesex County Division of History and Historic Preservation along with its sister site, the Cornelius Low House. Also located in Piscataway, the Low House is home to the Middlesex County Museum and its current exhibit, “Treasures of Middlesex County: 300 Years of Raritan Valley History,” featuring muskets, maps, documents, ceramics, furniture, and more.

Stroh highlighted the Middlesex County Regional Chamber of Commerce and its efforts to promote the historical village, especially through the pandemic.

“The Chamber is a great resource to help spread the word about the village and its substantial historical programming,” he said. “We appreciate its ongoing efforts to support the Village.”

Make sure to visit the Village and the Cornelius Low House on Saturday, Sept. 17 for extended hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in honor of Smithsonian Museum Day. There will be a special reception at the Low House from 4 to 6 p.m. Learn more at discovermiddlesex.com/arts-culture/preservation-of-history/east-jersey-old-town-village/.
