Great Updates from Viking Sports on 4/27/23!
Have you checked out the recent updates on Viking Spring Sports? There are some amazing performances by our local athletes that you wouldn't want to miss!
In the world of EB Baseball, they secured an impressive 6-2 victory against Apponequet on Wednesday. Sean Kenn's ground ball from Luke Parry broke the 2-2 tie in the 6th inning, and Parry himself later scored on a squeeze bunt by Joey Foley. Ryan Hunter's two-run single added to the Vikings lead to finish the inning. Ray and David McNaught delivered a fantastic pitching performance and led the Vikings to victory. EB is back at it again on Friday, this time against Mashpee.
Over on the track, the Girls Track team defeated Cohasset 83-53, moving them to 3-1 on the season. Grace Schnell and Emma Farrell shone, winning three events each. Grace won the long and triple jumps, as well as the 4x100 relay (with Calice Morton, Rachel Rinker, and Ari Cofran). Emma won the 400, javelin, and 4x400 relay (with Payton Chelmo, Lauren Dona, and Abby Barry). Other winners included Phoebe Katilus (high jump), Sash Feron (discus), Lily Deitz (shot put), Ella McCarthy (400 hurdles), and Bella Bright (100 hurdles).
In Rockland/EB boys tennis, they beat Middleboro in a S.S. League matchup 4-1 at Rockland. Senior Captain Peter Quinn won 6-0 6-0 at 2nd singles, and 8th grader Leo Monteiro won 7-6( 7-3 t.b.) 6-3 at 3rd singles. Senior Captain Logan Maguire and 8th grader Kaden Gerstel won 6-1 6-2 at 1st doubles, while freshman Will Cifrino and sophomore Mo Asad won 6-0 6-2 at 2nd doubles.
The Boys Track team defeated Cohasset 129-7 to improve their record to 4-0 on the season. Triple winner Chris Oman led the team to victory, winning the long jump, 200, and setting a new school record in the 100 at 10.9. Brennan Shea was a double winner in the high and 400 hurdles, Michel Mondesir was a double winner in the high jump and triple jump, and Nic Uzzo won the mile and placed second in the 800. Other winners included Mike Oman - javelin, Brad Walker - shot put, Mat Sebastyn - 800, Coleman McCarthy - 2 mile, and Sean Gurney - discus.
Lastly (and certainly not least), the Girl's Tennis Team started off strong against Randolph, with Captain Lindsay Maguire storming back to win the match with a strong performance at 1st singles. EB won 3-2 with wins from Julia Maguire and the doubles team of Ella Rix and Olivia Connors.
Keep an eye out for these talented athletes as they continue to impress and dominate in their respective sports!

Historical Tidbit: Beaver School House
|
When erected in 1842, the Beaver School House was one story high. The second story was added in 1855. The door at the right was the entrance. The stairs went up past the other door, with both the lower and upper entries across the end of the building. The first Beaver School House school stood where the well was, facing the cemetery, this is the second. It is now a house at 304 Summer Street.

Climate Can-Do: Speaking Up for Nature
There will always be a struggle to balance society and nature; but we, as the society, have a say in how our environment is treated. We can speak up. We know keeping our environment healthy affects our quality of life. One action we can take is let our local government know we care.
Local senators and representatives keep count of how many people contact them per issue. Because so many people spoke up about the algae blooms in Monponsett Pond (Halifax), it took a mere few years to clean it up. When we work together, we take important steps in caring for our earth. One active campaign right now is prevent radioactive waste from the decommissioned Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant from being dumped into Plymouth Bay. For more information, visit: www.saveourbayma.com.
Doing our part isn’t only about limiting our environmental footprint– it’s about community, and caring for every living thing within it. Advocating for our environment is one of the most crucial things that can be done. Contact local government officials and join in campaigns like Save Our Bay. Helping the planet is just a few steps away.
Senator Michael Brady:
This Climate Can-Do Article was written by Sam Isom, BuzzAround Writing Intern, Bridgewater State University. We focus on actions which individuals can do in the face of our climate emergency. We can do!

Anticipation.
As we start to see buds on the tips of branches and leaves pushing out of the ground, just the slightest amount of anticipation for the coming spring is in the air. I am reminded in each step the possibilities of the beauty what will be, what can be.
This is the positive side of anticipation, the hope deliverer.
Then, of course, anticipation is also the fear deliverer.
It's up to us which lens we choose to look through.
"We are ever on the threshold of new journeys and new discoveries. Can you imagine the excitement of the Wright brothers on the morning of that first flight? The anticipation of Jonas Salk as he analyzed the data that demonstrated a way to prevent polio?" ~ Joseph B. Wirthlin
|
If we imagine a future of solutions, we are more likely to move forward toward them. That IS exciting to aniticipate.
