Rapido UK Newsletter No. 63
©2025 Rapido Trains Ltd
| | |
'Tis the season to be jolly, and we couldn’t be happier.
Despite us winding down for a few well-earned days off over the festive period, we have quite a bit to talk about in this newsletter. There are some unconventional announcements, some new liveries for upcoming locos, an update on the delivery of future projects, and we have even made some headway with our Rapido layout.
This nicely wraps up a rather spectacular year for us, and we will go into a bit more detail about why it feels so special later in the newsletter.
Let's begin with the final announcement of 2025!
| | If you are using a web-based email service such as Gmail, be sure to click on the link near the bottom of the email that says something like "[Message clipped] View entire message". That will ensure you don't miss any of this newsletter. | | Welcome to the Custom Wagon Service. | | |
We are pleased to announce that, in conjunction with The Wagon Yard, our previously-trialled Custom Wagon Service is no longer a show exclusive and will now be available to everyone via a brand-new website!
For those of you who may have missed Rapido Railex 2024 and the National Festival of Railway Modelling 2024, we trialled a service where modellers could create a bespoke-lettered wagon with our designers. We then printed these designs and posted them out.
We were inundated with emails, requests, phone calls and comments on our Social Media pages, all crying out for the service to be available to everyone - not just at our shows. We couldn’t fault your enthusiasm, so our Operations Manager Steve set to building an all-new website to bring the Custom Wagon Service to the world wide web.
| | |
So, what is the Custom Wagon Service?
The Custom Wagon Service gives you the freedom to create your own design and have it printed on one of our highly-detailed wagons.
Got a name for a wagon that you wish were made as a ready-to-run livery? Maybe you’ve been desperate to create rolling stock for a particular business that features on your layout? Well, now you can finally create the wagon of your dreams.
You will be able to choose from two different styles of our RCH 1907 PO Wagon models, a 5-plank or 7-plank body. These will then be available in Black, Blue, Green, Red, or Yellow: the choice is yours!
There are then three different lettering layouts for you to choose from. These feature four locations on the wagon for you to add your chosen text and running number. Finally, there are three different types of font styles/typefaces to choose from, giving you even more options for customisation.
These customisable wagons will make fantastic additions to your fleet, great gifts for loved ones, or the perfect way to exercise your creativity.
You can find out more, create your designs, and order your bespoke wagon from our website now!
| | |
How can I place an order for a custom wagon?
First, head to the Custom Wagon Service website.
Then follow this handy video guide.
| |
When your design is finished, hit the complete button. This will add your new design to the cart.
Your wagon is now ready to process in the same way you would order any of our other products.
Click the cart icon at the top right of the screen, and this will show you your order. Hit the checkout button, and this will take you to the final step.
To complete the order, fill in your details and click the 'place order' button!
Once an order confirmation pop-up appears, your Customised Wagon order is complete.
It's as simple as that!
What will the custom wagon look like when it arrives?
If you would like to see examples of wagons made using the Custom Wagon Service, head to the Custom Wagon Service website gallery HERE.
| | |
What are the features of the 5 and 7 plank RCH 1907 PO Wagon models?
Much like our previous OO Gauge RCH 1907 7-Plank Private Owner Wagons, these models feature full external, internal and underframe details. All versions include brass bearings for smooth, friction-free running, split-spoked wheels, and NEM coupling pockets.
If you want to find out more about these or get some inspiration for your own design, head to the RCH 1907 PO Wagon webpage HERE.
| | |
Can I order more than one model in my custom livery?
If you are looking for multiple copies of the same design, you can add additional models while in your cart.
If you are looking to order a rake in the same custom wagon livery but with a different running number, you will need to jot down your selections and create a second product.
If you have previously ordered a wagon and wish to recreate it in the future, we are pleased to say that your details of previous custom wagon orders will be saved. You will need to create an account using the same email address with which you previously placed your order. Once you have created an account, your previous orders will be automatically migrated and you can find these via the orders tab when logged in to the Custom Wagon Service website. Then, as above, you can recreate your order by checking the details and creating a new product and changing the running number if desired.
In addition to this, if you place an order for three or more Custom Wagons at the same time, we will apply a whopping 20% discount (valid until the 5th January) to your entire order!
How long will my custom wagon take to arrive?
Once you have completed your order, the expected delivery time for the Custom Wagon Service will be approximately four weeks for UK-based orders. However, we do expect a flurry of orders in the next few days so the initial batch will take a couple of weeks longer to complete, pack and post, especially given our holiday office closure.
International shipping times will obviously depend on where you are located.
| |
How much stock is available, and what if the wagons are out of stock?
We only have a finite number; once they have sold out, that is it for the time being, so get them while you can!
We will ensure that if the version you want is out of stock, then it will show as unavailable on the website.
Should these prove popular, further batches will be considered in future. However, we cannot guarantee what prototype, colour or timeframe this will be.
What else do I need to know about the Rapido Custom Wagon Service?
As this is a bespoke item, sadly, we cannot accept returns on this product; however, it is covered by our usual warranty.
You can find out more about the T&C HERE.
| | With the Christmas break upon us there is no better time to sit down and design you very own custom wagon. Head over to the website by clicking the button below to get started. | | |
Colourful Caledonian - CR No.123 Colour Samples! (OO Gauge)
Are you sitting down? If not, we suggest you pour yourself a generous glass of Scotch and take a seat.
We have received colour samples that we always knew we could count on to be gorgeous. The illustrious Caledonian Railway No.123!
| | |
When the team visited her in the Glasgow Museum in February, we knew this was going to become a rather special model. Resplendent in its Caledonian Blue livery, this loco is fit for a King. It's no wonder it was used as the pilot loco for Royal Trains heading to Balmoral Castle.
The previously-seen engineering sample was nice and gave us a good idea of its overall shape, but many of the subtle or finer details were lost in that unfinished state. As these would be applied during the paint stage, we can now see them in all their glory. From the exquisite black and white lining that covers the loco to the thistles applied to the front of the bogie splashers, there is so much to take in.
| | Proudly displaying the Caledonian Railway crest on both its tender side and giant splashers, Caley 123 championed the company at the 1886 International Exhibition of Industry, Science and Art in Edinburgh. Using a whopping eight different colours in this tiny space, we think we have captured the crest's likeness handsomely. | | When we said we were going to include the thistles that were engraved into the buffers when No.123 completed several rail tours in the 1960s, many of you thought we were joking. Well, here they are, impressive, aren’t they! | | Although the model's exterior draws the eye first, it would be an injustice not to take a closer look at 123’s cab details. This looks amazing and is only going to be more impressive once each of the separately fitted parts is illuminated by the model's Dynamic Firebox Flicker feature. | | These painted samples also help to emphasise the cosmetic inside motion that was previously difficult to see on the engineering prototypes. | | For that final touch, we are including painted metal etched works plates that you can fit yourself should you want to. | | Seeing as we have these incredible colour samples already, we feel that closing the order book is the proper thing to do. More importantly, it means our factory can proceed with production, and we can get the models in your hands sooner. As such, we will be closing the order book on the prestigious project on Monday the 2nd of February. | | |
All this talk of incredible Scottish locos has brought out our inner Scot, so we’re off to enjoy another wee dram of Oban 14 and prepare for the Haggis Hunt.
You can pre-order yours either directly through our website or via any of our Official Retailers.
| | Yuletide Yankees – Even More S160 Production Colour Samples! (OO Gauge) | | Christmas came early at the Rapido offices, as we received a parcel full of colourful samples just before this newsletter was published. As we unwrapped this with glee, sample after sample of the incredible OO Gauge S160 was revealed. We had received a few more examples of the remaining liveries from the range, and a few exclusive variants too! | | |
These new samples included some of the most memorable preserved versions, which we know many of you are looking forward to seeing.
Let's not tease you any further and dive headfirst into what new goodies have arrived.
There are four wartime variants in our range: one from each of the Big Four regions. We were pleased to receive a few more samples of these historic liveries, as we know this is a popular era to model. These will look at home at the head of a huge rake of Private Owner wagons, or flat wagons laden with top-secret cargo.
| | They don’t call it Big Jim for no reason. Although of modest size when compared to the locomotive behemoths that our North American cousins utilised, the S160 is quite the substantial steamer when compared to many of the UK-based locos of its day. Lots of you will have seen Big Jim at the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, so we had to include it in our range. We hope you like our latest sample as much as we do. | | The Churnet Valley Railway has been the premier preserved railway for S160 fans for many years, being the home to several examples of the class and having organised a variety of themed events that included double and triple-headed trains. Painted almost entirely in black, No.5197 rounds out the Churnet Valley-based locos in our range nicely. | | |
Finished in a striking maroon livery, Omaha is well known to enthusiasts, as it has moved between a variety of heritage railways throughout its preservation years. We think this locomotive is a highlight of the new samples, and it looks incredibly sharp. We can't wait to get this running around the Rapido layout.
We have also received samples for the S160 Exclusive liveries!
| | |
The Rails of Sheffield exclusive model has a really interesting history. Eighteen S160s that were deployed to Northern Europe carried names. The first of these was No.2582 'Pvt. H.J. O’Brien'. Painted in the Black of the Transportation Corps, it's finished with whitewall tyres and a white running board. This loco was a respectful tribute to the fallen soldier.
You can find out more about No.2582 'Pvt. H.J. O’Brien' in Transportation Corps U.S.A Black and pre-order yours HERE.
| | |
Our final sample is of the Ellis Clarke exclusive No.2044 in WD Drab. Based at Sudbury in Staffordshire, a local fireman distinctly remembers that some of the S160s were painted khaki or drab. Whether this was the case or not, you cannot deny that this livery really looks good on this loco. This is the perfect candidate if you are looking for an alternative livery for your wartime fleet!
You can find out more about No.2044 in WD Drab and pre-order yours HERE.
| | |
Everything about these samples is great - even the boxes!
These samples give us everything we need to review the S160 ahead of final assembly, and we will be completing this review before the year is out. That way, our factory can make any final tweaks or adjustments and complete production of these magnificent models over the coming weeks.
With such positive progress, we are confident that these models can still be delivered during Q1 of the new year. You are just going to have to keep an eye on future newsletters for more shipping news!
There are only a very limited number still available to pre-order directly through the website. If you want to find out more about the S160 and pre-order yours, follow the link below.
Get in there quickly before they are deployed to other people's collections.
| | North Western Niceties – LNWR Evolution Coach Colour Production Samples (OO Gauge) | | |
Well, these have certainly been worth the wait.
Last but by no means least (at least for Batch 1), we have received the colour production samples of the upcoming LNWR liveried Evolution Coaches.
| | These are perfect to complement your existing LNWR ready-to-run models and are ideal for representing stopping or suburban services. It's not just their striking exterior that looks great; their fully lit interior will allow you to see all of the incredible internal detail and any passengers you choose to fit in the compartments. | | |
We have sold out of this particular livery directly through our website; however, many of our Official Retailers have taken stock of these gorgeous coaches. So, we recommend contacting your preferred local retailer if you still want to add these to your collection when they arrive.
This incredible livery concludes those featured in Batch 1, and LNWR versions will be arriving as part of the Stage 3 delivery at some point early next year.
| | The Winter Blues – Two Exciting New “What If” Liveries for the D40 and County Class | | |
You can say goodbye to the winter blues, as our final announcement for the festive period is two new “What if” liveries that we are adding to our OO Gauge LNER D40 and GWR County ranges.
We know many of you love to run what you think looks good on your layouts, applying limited concern for any era or historical relevance that might restrict your collection and creativity, and that’s fantastic. So, we do not doubt that these new brilliant blue liveries will catch your eye. Let's take a look at each of them!
| | LNER D40 No.49 Thistle “What If” Blue | | |
This loco was shared on our social media channels a few months ago as part of a rejected livery post, and it's fair to say the public reaction to this rejection was a loud outcry of OCH NO!
We are pleased to announce that LNER D40 No.49 Thistle in “What If” Blue has been thoroughly un-rejected and will be a part of the range.
Fitting in nicely with our Manning Wardle L Class – Hawthorn (What If) that will be arriving next year, and the recently arrived SECR O1 No.65 Bramble Bluebell Railway Blue (What If), LNER D40 No.49 Thistle will be finished in the same striking blue. So that she fitted in with the others of the same livery, we needed to give her an appropriately fauna or floral-based name. Thistle was the obvious choice!
You can find out more about all the awesome features and details of LNER D40 No.49 Thistle in “What if” Blue, and the rest of the LNER D40 range HERE.
| | GWR County No.1045 County of Kent “What if” BR Express Passenger Blue | | |
In the late 1940s, British Railways painted many of its most well-known express locos in a gorgeous Express Passenger Blue livery. It was such a shame that the County Class never received the same treatment, so with a wicked ‘What If’ livery, we’ve fixed this injustice.
Given the number of express services these powerful locos pulled, it’s definitely a ‘What If’ that could so easily have happened. We think you’ll agree that although this might make the most ardent GWR purist's eye twitch, it looks really smart, and will look great in your Western region fleet.
In the spirit of our ‘What If’ liveries, we could hardly name it after an actual county from the West Country. We suspect that would have made even the not-so-pure GWR fans spit out their cider, so we named this model after Rapido’s home county of Kent.
You can find out more about all the awesome features and details of GWR County No.1045 County of Kent in “What If” BR Express Passenger Blue, and the rest of the GWR County range HERE.
Both models are available to pre-order now, in both DCC-ready and DCC Sound-Fitted versions. You can pre-order either of these wonderful “What If” liveries from our website or via any of our Official Retailers.
| | New LokPilot DCC Decoders Range for Rapido Models | | |
Are you looking to be able to control your Rapido locomotive on DCC but don’t wish for it to make sound?
Well, now you can with our new range of ESU LokPilot DCC Decoders, each pre-loaded with the appropriate locomotive LokPilot file. This gives you all of the same functions (where fitted) and motor controls as their DCC Sound counterparts.
SO, what does this mean?
When fitted with a third-party DCC decoder, our models are able to be controlled and function on layouts that are controlled by DCC; however, this is usually only the basic motor controls. You often lose a variety of fun functions when making this compromise.
Our new range of ESU LokPilot DCC Decoders retains these functions, allowing great play value, and means you can get the most out of your models.
| | |
These features include the following:
-
Motor functions - The driving experience will be the same as the sound-fitted equivalent. The loco will coast until the brake is applied.
-
Brake functions – This means it's not just the stop-and-go experience you will get from third-party decoders.
-
Firebox flicker - This includes the Dynamic Firebox Flicker functions if the model has them.
-
Light functions - Directional or optional lighting can be changed manually via the controller and not just by changing the controller's direction.
-
Train set mode - An optional mode that simplifies the controls to be a stop-and-go experience, similar to how a DC model will handle.
-
Shunt mode – This makes the controller significantly more responsive by limiting the top speed to 50%, and retains the same number of speed steps you get when using the normal driving controls.
-
Stay Alive Functions – This maintains the model's momentum for a short time after the power is cut, so it is ideal for traversing points with smaller locos, shunting, or areas of your track that are challenging to keep clean.
| |
Of course, these available functions are dictated by the hardware that the model has fitted to it. Some of our models don’t have directional lighting, firebox flicker, dynamic firebox flicker or Stay Alives fitted. You can find out more about the features each of our models has by going to the specific product page for your chosen model on our website.
You can order your ESU LokPilot DCC Decoders with pre-loaded Rapido locomotive LokPilot files directly through our website now!

Order Book Closing Dates
Blimey, we aren’t messing about with the first order book closing of the year, as this one's a biggie!
Ironic, when you consider that a good chunk of this one is our current upcoming 009 Gauge range. We have also made great headway with two OO Gauge projects, one of which is the County that we mentioned earlier, and the other is a brakevan we know lots of Northwestern and LMS modellers have been waiting for. Oh, and maybe a few G. Fawkes fans too…
Make sure you start the new year with a bang. Get your pre-orders in by Monday the 5th of January, for the following items:
Seeing as we have the incredible colour samples for CR No.123 already, closing the order book is the proper thing to do. More importantly, it means our factory can proceed with production, and we can get the models in your hands sooner. To go alongside this, we have another of our incredibly popular RCH 1907 Private Owner range that is also closing, the humble Salt Van.
Order books close on Monday the 2nd of February, for the following:
Remember, if you want to pre-order any of these models, you can do so directly through our website or with any of our Official Retailers.

Factory Updates
As usual our factories have been busy beavering away on our in production projects including:
| | LNWR opens are nearly finished in the tampo printing room. | | Insulated Meat Van livery is being applied to our GN Vans. | | LNER liveries are also being applied. | | Its not all grey - our GE 5 Planks also have some more colourful liveries. | | The factories will continue in full swing over Christmas in the run up to Chinese New Year. We hope to have lots to show you over the coming months. | | |
The Cornishman – NEW GWR County Samples Tour the Rapido Layout
A new engineering prototype of the powerful GWR County has arrived, and we took the opportunity to get a few shots of it thundering around the Rapido Layout. It's hard not to reflect on the glory days of steam and reminisce about bygone expresses and holiday excursions when you are at the controls of a big GWR loco. Here is a quick video, so you can see for yourself just how good these models will look on your layout.
| | |
Remember, you’ve not got long to get your orders in for OO Gauge County, as order books close on the 5th of January.
So, while you're trying to combat the winter blues and contemplating a sunny summer break to your favourite part of the West Country, why not pre-order one of our lovely County models to remind you of holidays gone by?
You can pre-order yours directly through our website or via any of our Official Retailers.
Go on, it's Christmas! Treat yourself!
| | Slow-Running Sirdars – New Sirdar Engineering Prototype (009) | | |
Our factory has sent us updated engineering prototypes of the upcoming 009 gauge Long Tank Sirdar Class and Short Tank Sirdar Class.
When we first showed you these, we wanted to squeeze as many different samples into the video as we could, so we showed them moving at quite a pace. Some of you rightly pointed out to us that humble little engines such as this wouldn’t usually move at a speed reminiscent of a certain Smoking Joseph.
As we received some lovely new samples, we wanted to show you how they performed at a more realistic speed. Here's a short video of what they are like at slower speeds and how they traverse points.
| | We also grabbed a photo for you to enjoy, as these make the incredible cab detail and separately-fitted parts that much clearer than the previous samples. Wow! That looks simply wonderful! | | |
Marcia Documentary – “The Pocket Peckett”
In last month's newsletter, we mentioned that we had made a fun little documentary about our little loco, Marcia, for the National Festival of Railway Modelling.
This went down well with those who got to see it, and we thought that those of you who didn’t manage to get to the show might like to see it too. We hope you enjoy it.
| | If you want to find out more about Marcia, grab some Peckett-themed swag, or donate to the upkeep and running of this magical little loco, follow the link below. | | |
A Rapido Layout Update
It's been a few months since we shared a progress update on the Rapido Layout, and seeing as we have been using it for a variety of videos and photos already, we thought you might like to see it in a bit more detail.
The plan for this stage was to get as much done on the upper level of the layout as possible, whilst creating mini dioramas within the overall layout that can be used for photos and video content, while the rest of the layout takes shape.
| |
The talented Mr. Dan Evason of Tunnel Lane Model Railways was due to come down and do a couple of days with us, working on the layout and helping us move it forward. To ensure Dan had everything ready, we needed to do some additional prep of certain areas in anticipation of his arrival. This led us to laying a bit more track, including a short section of 009 in the industrial sector, hand sculpting a cobblestone pattern around the canal and industrial buildings, starting the platforms for the upper terminus, and getting the turntable set in place.
When Dan arrived, it was all hands to the pump. We helped him finish off the station area, including the signal box, and while Dan put in a herculean effort ballasting all of the upper section, we finished off the platforms for the terminus.
| |
While all of this was going on, fences, gates, water towers, huts, tools, buffer stops, yard lamps, tie-ups for the canal, and a multitude of other detailed bits were being hand-painted. Dan then spent the next few days integrating these details into scenes using the buildings that had been finished a few months ago.
This has helped create several sections that now only need a few key details and figures to fully bring them to life.
| |
With the progress looking good on the rest of the upper section, we were able to make some more headway on the rural area and the tunnel mouth junction. We found that the way we had installed the original tunnel mouth wasn’t perfect for clearance. Under Dan's guidance, we cut a bit further into the embankment and widened it using a newly printed and painted tunnel mouth.
We thought, while we are at it, we may as well do a bit more work on the junction around the tunnel mouth, so Dan ballasted that section too.
Finally, the grassy embankment had fencing added, a greater variety of scatter, and a selection of trees. This added real depth to it, and we have already been enjoying this section for shooting videos.
We think you will agree that this layout is starting to take shape. Keep an eye out and see if you can spot it in some of our upcoming videos.

Thought of The Month
We will be honest; we have already started stuffing our faces with mince pies for a good few weeks and are looking forward to a few well-earned days over the festive period. So, we haven’t got a thought-provoking insight for December's Thought of the Month, sorry!
All we are thinking is, we hope someone hasn’t eaten all the good Quality Street by the time we get home, and we can't wait to play with all our new models.
Jason: Can I step in for a bit?
Rapido UK: Oh no.
Jason: I'd like to say how proud I am of the UK team. These guys have done an incredible job running our company. Every time I visit or we chat online I am so impressed by their professionalism, passion, innovation, and dedication. It is rare to find such a group of extremely talented and motivated people, united by a shared love of Britain's railways and railway history, working together to create something so special and unique. I look forward to many more years of success as our team continues to innovate and grow. Well done, boys!
Rapido UK: That's it?
Jason: Yes, that's it.
Rapido UK: No obscure Doctor Who references? No complaints that we haven't made a 1:76 scale Davros or whatever?
Jason: Nope.
Rapido UK: Ah... Umm... That was actually really nice. Are you feeling OK?
Anyway, we just want to thank you all for a cracking 2025, our fifth year as a company, and we look forward to many more like it. So go, be merry, play with your trains, design yourself a new custom wagon, and don’t be too sad that there is no Dr Who Christmas Special this year.
Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, and we hope you have an incredible New Year!
