3CSN Design Labs Winter 2023

Dear colleagues,

Ready for Spring 2023? Prepare for your classes with 3CSN.

This winter, we will be providing intensive online professional learning labs where you will intentionally design student-centered, equitable, and highly engaging courses.

Professional learning badges will be awarded for completion and may be used for flex credit (check with your campus for eligibility). Learn more and register below!

For your convenience, you may register for all labs with the same EventBrite link.
Each registration covers all parts of the design lab.
ePortfolios
Hello, Is it me you’re looking for?: ePortfolios as tools for engagement, assessment, and completion (and so much more!)
January 9, 11, 13, 10 AM - 12 PM
Are you looking for a way to engage students and foster a sense of belonging while assessing learning, hoping to implement a broader ePortfolio initiative on your campus, or interested in creating a professional ePortfolio for employment or tenure review? Want the space to plan and work on this project in community with experienced ePortfolio practitioners and educators across the state?

Join 3CSN coordinators Kelan Koning and Diana Bonilla Hein, past participants Trang Abeid (English Faculty, Cosumnes River College) and Jamey Cooper (STEM Faculty, Victor Valley College), and student designers for this design lab to learn about the various possibilities for, and value of, ePortfolios, and to design an ePortfolio project of your own.

Ungrading
Ungrading
January 11, 12, 13, 12 PM - 1:30 PM
Want to learn equitable ways to assess student learning and build a more inclusive classroom? Join 3CSN coordinator Jennifer Escobar for this three-part Zoom series. Sessions will include ungrading syllabi, ungrading classroom assignments, and ungrading the syllabus.

The sessions will be held on January 11, 12, and 13 from 12 PM to 1:30 PM with optional community hours from 1:30 PM to 2:00 PM each day for deeper discussion and practice.

Peer Educator Power
Peer Educator Power: Cultivating collaboration and connections for deeper learning
January 16, 18, 23, 1 PM - 2:30 PM
Looking for ways to enrich learning assistance on your campus? Join 3CSN coordinator Crystal Kiekel and peer educators for this design lab that invites peer educators (including tutors, SI leaders, peer mentors) and other learning assistance professionals (including faculty, staff, administrators) to explore how to build and sustain deeper connections with each other and with our students to create stronger and more powerful learning environments. Come ready to design ongoing, supportive, structured communities that help define and strengthen our practice!

Lighting the Path
Lighting the Path: New strategies for guiding undecided students
January 17, 19, 24, 26, 10:30 AM - 12 PM
In times of uncertainty, community college educators are even more essential in supporting students, particularly those who are undecided or uncertain about their educational and career goals. Together, we can support them on their journey by helping them gain the self-awareness, knowledge, critical thinking/inquiry skills, and experiences that provide clarity and instill initiative.

Join 3CSN coordinators Joanna Zimring Towne and Diana Bonilla Hein for this lab where we will take a deeper dive into CCRC’s framework of Ask, Connect, Inspire and Plan to help students who are still exploring make a meaningful and informed choice. We will explore models and best practices for expanding and embedding the career exploration process throughout the entire campus and providing opportunities for career and major exploration as part of your ongoing Guided Pathways implementation.

We Can Do This
We Can Do This: Equity by course design - Creating caring, engaging, and rigorous learning communities
February 7, 9, 14, & 16, 3 PM - 4:30 PM
Looking for ways to increase equity, show care, engage your learners and cultivate student success? We can do this, together! Let’s leverage our learning during these times of change to get to the core of effective teaching: designing equitable, caring, rigorous and engaging classrooms for our students and ourselves. Join 3CSN Coordinator Sarah Sullivan as well as faculty colleagues from across the state for this four-part design lab.

We will build relationships and knowledge together while we focus on culturally relevant pedagogy and student-centered active learning and apply our metacognitive reflections and collaborative learning to redesign elements of our spring courses.
