Vincentian Reflection for the Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

September 25, 2022

Gospel: (Luke 16:19-31) Jesus said to the Pharisees: “There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day. And lying at his door was a poor man Lazarus, covered with sores, who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man’s table. When the poor man died, he was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham. The rich man died and was buried, and from the netherworld, where he was in torment, he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he cried out ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am suffering torment in these flames.’ Abraham replied, ‘My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but now he is comforted here whereas you are tormented. He said, ‘Then I beg you, father, send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they too come to this place of torment.’ But Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them.’ He said, ‘Oh no, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ Then Abraham said, ‘If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead.”

Reflection: The basic commandment is to love God and neighbor. There is such a scriptural insistence on taking care of the poor and needy because when all have their fill of the good gifts of God it is a sign of God’s care and presence, the in-breaking of God’s reign where no one will be in need. When we neglect to care for those in need we actually delay the coming of God’s kingdom. Listening to God’s word has a double edge: we not only learn to live but also further God’s kingdom when we respond appropriately to what we hear. Listening is part of the decisiveness of discipleship. (Living Liturgy, p.216)

Vincentian Meditation: “As followers of St. Vincent, we profess to have both an eye and a heart for the suffering poor. We profess and proclaim to show the effective compassion of Jesus Christ towards those who are Lazarus in today’s world. To have an eye and a heart of compassion for the poor is a grace of Jesus Christ. We cannot turn on the compassion of Jesus, as we would water from a tap. We must humbly ask that grace of compassion from Jesus Christ.” (McCullen, Deep Down Things, p. 297)

What challenges do you hear in this Gospel?

Does it change the way we perceive and receive our neighbor currently experiencing need?

How might we help others hear and live this message?

Our Health Matters

(Repeated from last week because we care)

A few items to share:

COVID vaccinations are available on a walk-up basis in our Charitable Pharmacy. We have received our first shipment of the Pfizer “Bivalent” COVID Vaccine Booster. This bivalent vaccine aids in protection against the two most prominent strains of COVID - the original and the omicron variant - and replaces all other previous booster recommendations. The White House released a statement this week indicating that this vaccine is being considered the first “annual” booster and anticipates recommending a version of this vaccine every year (similar to annual flu shots). This may mean that after receiving this dose, you may not be recommended to have another until next fall.

Here are some FAQs that may help in your decision to receive the booster:

  • Who can get the booster? CDC is recommending this booster for anyone 12 years and older who has already completed the primary vaccine series. You are eligible to receive this booster if you have not received any other booster within 2 months. Boosters exist for ages 5-11 as well, but our Pharmacy will not be providing these. Our Pharmacy is offering boosters to anyone who is eligible, including neighbors, staff, and volunteers.
  • Should I get the booster if I had COVID? A statement this week from the White House backed by CDC indicates that people recently infected with COVID can wait three months after infection to get the COVID booster. This has been shown to result in a stronger immune response.
  • Can I still get the flu shot? Yes, the CDC recommends receiving both the COVID booster and flu shot this year, and no wait time is needed between the two. You can even receive both shots in the same visit.
  • When can I get the booster? Our Pharmacy continues to offer vaccines without an appointment during open hours at either location (NOC, M-F 8am – 4pm; Western Hills, TWF 10am – 4:30pm).

Bank of America has selected St. Vincent de Paul as one of its partners to support FREE flu shots in partnership with CVS Pharmacy.

Watch for a voucher on our website which you may share digitally or in-print with our neighbors, but not with other organizations. A voucher is required for each person wanting a flu shot, so make sure you provide multiples for families. These vouchers may be redeemed for a flu shot at any CVS Pharmacy in our area, to be provided at no charge for individuals who do not have insurance or whose insurance does not cover the flu shot.

All adults and children (ages 3+) are recommended to receive the annual flu shot. This vaccine may be received at the same time as the COVID vaccine/booster. As a reminder, the Charitable Pharmacy does not have access to the flu shot on-site, but we can provide the COVID vaccine or bivalent booster.

UC’s Open School has returned to our NOC to provide free health screenings for our neighbors on most Saturday mornings from 9am-noon. Students (supervised by licensed professionals) from various healthcare areas provide these services. Screenings include blood sugar, oral health, & blood pressure. Health education consults are also available. Upcoming dates are: 10/1, 10/15, 10/22, 10/29, & 11/5.

Conference Happenings

  • Corpus Christi/St John Neumann (New Burlington/Pleasant Run) & St John the Baptist (Dry Ridge) Conferences comprise a Family of Parishes. They came together for a cookout/social for members and spouses in late June. The event was so enjoyable they gathered again on 8/31 for a spiritual reflection and dessert...and then on Sun, 9/18, for a joint commissioning ceremony. Faith, friendship and service are meant to be shared!
  • Announcing recent Conference Presidents transitions - we thank & congratulate all involved for leadership succession to keep Conference life vibrant:
  • Our Lady of the Rosary/St Matthias Conference (Greenhills/Forest Park): Jim DeSalvo has followed Carol Hartlaub (who is moving to northern Kentucky and will become an active Vincentian in SVDP-NKY)
  • St Joseph Conference (West End): Gwen Dukes is following Robert Johnson
  • Holy Trinity Conference (Norwood): Barbara Schwallie is following George Freudenberg

  • Our Lady of the Valley (Reading) & Our Lady of the Rosary/St Matthias Conferences (Greenhills/Forest Park) are jointly hosting a pasta dinner on Saturday evening, 10/8, to raise awareness of, and funding for, their good works. This fun evening will include raffle baskets and split the pot. Location is Our Lady of the Valley, 416 W Vine St, Reading, OH 45215. For more info, you can contact Penny O'Brien at 513.240.1817 or pennyobrien50@gmail.com .

Space constraints don't allow us to share all the good works you are doing in your Conferences; these are a sample.

Does your Conference or Family of Parishes have news to share?

Please send your story - and pictures too - to Tom Roberts at troberts@svdpcincinnati.org .

The Home Visit

The home visit, as practiced by St Vincent de Paul himself long before our Society came into existence, and by Blessed Frederic Ozanam and his contemporaries at the genesis of our Society, remains the differentiating element of our Vincentian vocation among numerous ministries and service organizations. We are overjoyed to see so many Cincinnati Vincentians re-engaging with our neighbors in this interaction - so personal, so mutually lifting.

Upcoming Temporary Disruptions of our NOC Services

  • This coming Wed, 9/28 - Our NOC and all normal services offered within will close at 2pm for a special function and re-open Thurs, 9/29, 8am.

More Resources for our Conferences and Neighbors

Conference Assistance Fund (CAF)

We, together, have extended $740,192 in total FY2022 CAF assistance for the 11 months ended 8/31/2022, including $79,960 to 189 households in August.

September activity to-date:

  • You've submitted 150 fresh applications
  • We've already approved 174 applications for over $77,000 in assistance
  • We have 59 applications currently in-process

Please take note of our high volume and continued growth of CAF applications. Thanks to our volunteers who are processing applications so promptly, and to Olivia & Alec. Our augmented September funding is $80,000; we will temporarily suspend approvals today when we have fully extended this September funding. Processing and approvals will restart on October 3. Our monthly CAF funding, beginning October, is $60,000, plus any twinning to CAF by Conferences. We offer thanks to those Conferences & their donors who have recently twinned through CAF. We also appreciate the direct twinning activity between Conferences with surplus funds and those experiencing more need than the funding they organically attract. If your Conference is currently blessed with funds exceeding 2-3 months of your normal operating outflow, please know that we have fellow Conferences in search of funds to invest in lifting neighbors right now. We invite your Conference to discern if twinning is your best available act of faithful stewardship.

Please expect that we will be implementing adjustments to our CAF model to more closely align your/our flow of applications with available funding.

While our CAF exists to be extended to your/our neighbors, please also seize opportunities to help our neighbors experiencing need to access governmental programs for which they may qualify and other publicly- and privately-funded assistance resources. This is particularly relevant for neighbors navigating chronic budgetary shortfalls. Examples include SNAP, SSDI, and the OWF & PRC programs administered by Hamilton County Job and Family Services ("JFS").

Finally, we remind you that your Conference must be utilizing CMS to access CAF for your/our neighbors effective 10/1/2022. Each CAF application submitted should have a CMS case #. Why? CMS, as now used by the majority of our Conferences, is proving to be an extremely useful tool to do our good works better.

Publicly-Funded Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERA 1 & 2)

As you were recently informed, we cannot accept or process any additional ERA 1 (Hamilton County) applications in collaboration with CAA. We were able to transfer certain applications for City of Cincinnati residents to ERA 2, funded through the City of Cincinnati. As of today, we have approved 2 ERA 2 applications and have 11 more in progress. This ERA 2 program should be available to December, 2022. Please note the Resource Spotlight on Thurs, 9/29, promoted earlier in this edition.

Rahe Beds Fund & Program

All September bed requests have been processed. You should have received an email through Jotform with the voucher numbers and CMS instructions. The October bed request window will be open October 1 -5, and each Conference may submit up to six bed requests using the online request form.

If your Conference is considering purchasing beds to extend as assistance, you can get info, including current pricing, or purchase by contacting Dave Chidlow, Stores Retail Resource Manager, at dchidlow@svdpcincinnati.org or 513.853.1002. Your purchased beds will be picked up at our CHRC within our Liz Carter Center. Please be aware that our beds cost and resale pricing have risen significantly.

We still have pack ‘n’ plays available for neighbors with children too young for beds (under age two). These do not count against the limit of two Rahe beds per household per lifetime. If you have a neighbor who is in need of one, please contact Phuong at rahebedfund@svdpcincinnati.org . We will provide the neighbor with a voucher that can be redeemed at our CHRC.

Do you have questions about our Rahe Beds Fund & Program?

You can find the most updated Bed Fund Conference Guide in the Members section of the SVDP website. You are also welcome to join us on Wednesday, 10/19, 3-4pm, for a Beds Assistance Resource Spotlight. (Zoom information found earlier in this edition).

Metro Bus Passes (Everybody Rides Metro)

Your Conference has access to Metro bus passes to be extended to neighbors for use for any of 3 defined purposes:

  1. Commute to/from new employment
  2. Commute to/from our Bank St services hub or other community social services
  3. Commute to/from medical appointments

Please understand that these passes are sourced through the Everybody Rides Metro program and our Council is required to comply with the above-referenced usages and submit reports of passes distributed. Please also understand that your Conference will need to record bus passes extended in CMS for the neighbors receiving this assistance. Our Bus Pass Guidelines sheet for Conferences is available to you on the Members Support page of our website https://www.svdpcincinnati.org/conferences-members/member-support/

or use this link to go directly to this document
