YOUR INSTITUTE NEWS & UPDATES

OCTOBER 2020
NLI events in full swing this month...
BOOK CLUB #3 BEGINS ON OCTOBER 14TH

NLI is pleased to once again invite you to join our Community Book Club. Book #3 is Just Medicine: A Cure for Racial Inequality in American Healthcare by Dayna Bowen Matthew. Dozens of community members have contributed to ongoing dialogue on social justice in previous groups. Now, you can join in for our Book #3 discussions on October 14th. Guests will participate in weekly conversations led by NLI facilitator GiGi Elder.

Health disparities have remained stubbornly entrenched in the American health care system, and in Just Medicine, Dayna Bowen Matthew finds that they principally arise from unconscious racial and ethnic biases held by physicians, institutional providers, and their patients. Registration is now open!
CIVICS WORKSHOP SERIES - 2 SESSIONS REMAIN

The Institute is pleased to introduce its Virtual Civics Workshop Series - "Demystifying This Season of Voting". As the 2020 Presidential election approaches, we are hosting a series for community members to learn, engage and participate in civic dialogues about one of our most important responsibilities as citizens: Voting. We want to ensure that voters have access to information and a clear understanding about the voting process, candidates running for office, and important issues on the ballot.

Two virtual workshops remain. They will be hosted on Oct. 20 & Nov. 10. All meetings are at 6:00 PM. Mark your calendars!

SCHOOLS AS NEIGHBORHOOD RESOURCES

The Schools as Neighborhood Resources program starts on November 4, 2020 this year. The full program will run from November 4, 2020- March 15, 2021. Each week, we will convene communities on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. 6:00pm-8:00pm. This program allows us to ensure the community recreation needs are met and residents remain active.

With current health conditions and concerns present, participants will be subject to strict social distancing and hygiene practices at all locations. All six of our CMSD school sites will have alternative locations until further notice of school building reopenings. See below for locations in the NLI Program Updates.

Neighborhood Leadership Institute develops grassroots leaders who help rebuild the bonds of community and improve the quality of life for neighborhood residents throughout Greater Cleveland.

NLI FEATURE
True2U 9th Grade Mentor Recruitment
The True2U Mentoring program is seeking mentors for the 9th Grade Extension program. This program is a virtual, one-on-one mentoring program that provides additional support through the 9th grade year to scholars who have distinguished themselves during the 8th grade school-year True2U program. The program will help students to further develop their interests, strengths, goals, and build upon their leadership skills during seven Saturday sessions.

Mentors will lead each session, which features engaging icebreakers, group activities, thought-provoking discussions and one-on-one mentoring interactions that will help students succeed in high school and set them on a path to college and career readiness. Session themes include goal-setting, career awareness, money management, and planning for college, to name a few.

Mentors can work from the comfort of their own home and must commit to just 7 Saturday sessions. Please contact Caroline Brennan (caroline@neighborhoodleadership.org) with any questions. The mentor application link may be found HERE.
VOTE!
Election Day is Tuesday November 3, 2020

Hopefully you have all registered to vote and have a plan to make your voice heard on November 3rd - or maybe you already voted! If so, thank you for doing your civic duty. The Institute encourages every eligible voter to participate, whether it's in person voting at your polling location or at the Board of Elections (BOE), or voting by absentee ballot, which may be mailed in or dropped off at the BOE by November 3rd.

In addition to the nation's presidency, many other important offices and issues will be determined on November 3rd. NLI wants to help inform our community on these issues and turn out voters. One important issue on the ballot is the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) 2020 School Levy. Citizens for Our Children’s Future, the citizens committee that leads campaigns for CMSD ballot issues, and NLI join to request the following of NLI leaders, alumni and friends:

Please engage leaders and members in your network about the school issue and enlist interested volunteers to spread support via texting, social media, (virtual) meet ups and yard signs. Most importantly, you can promote voting in this year's election. We need informed and engaged residents at the polls!

Interested in helping out? Or just want to learn more? Check out the links below. And please remember to vote!

NLI ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
SHARRON FOXX

The first thing you notice about Sharron Foxx is her megawatt smile; it serves as a beacon that simultaneously disarms and draws one close. It is this talent that has made her one of the most respected theater professionals in northeastern Ohio. During her career, Foxx has served as an actor, director and artistic director.  Foxx is the founder of Maiden Voyage, which produces shows geared toward women of color.

“Sharron is a fun-loving spirit with a warm welcoming smile. Such a pleasure to work with and be around,” said, Sabrina Cox, a local film and stage actor who has been featured in films such as With this Ring, and Surviving Compton. In 2017, Foxx directed Cox in the intense historical drama, The Lynching of Effie Childs at the Salvation Army in East Cleveland.

Like many graduates of Neighborhood Leadership Cleveland, Foxx has never been content to just discharge her craft, but to turn that craft into a vehicle to serve her community. Foxx, a proud member of class 27, has served as a Teaching Artist with Literacy Thru the Arts for the past two years.

“We teach them the basics about theater,” said Foxx, who navigates her eager students through a number of theater exercises. For Foxx, educating young people has in some ways been a re-education of the fundamentals of her craft. “To teach is to learn twice,” said Foxx about her post as instructor.

During her time at NLI, Foxx says she learned many lessons that still serve her to this day.
“NLI taught me to meet people where they are.  It’s hard to be involved in the community if you have preconceived notions about people.” After years in the field of theater, Foxx has become a respected elder in her field. In addition to her duties at Literacy Thru the Arts, she is also a vocalist with the musical bands: Foxx & Co., Afterthought, the Nu Soul Band and Wish You Were Here. She also works with Powerful Long Ladder Theater.
