Thursday, June 8th, 2023: Socks and Sandals Edition

Wind elementals! Water elementals! Fire elementals! And wood ticks. It's been a heck of a month, especially when most of it is experienced in six-second increments.

Time to return to your favourite merchant to replenish your supplies.

You are welcomed by name as you enter the tiny castle, and your gaze lands on a whole host of beautiful New Things. You check your on-hand wealth and see that you have more than enough for your trail rations and health potions.

And a sparkly New Thing or two. As a treat.

Game of the Week: Tapple

You've seen it on TikTok.

You've looked for it in store.

And now you can add it to your game shelf for almost half the price of a store that you may have seen on TV.

That's right, this week's Game of the Week is the fast-thinking, alphabet-smacking word game TAPPLE.

If you want an easy-peasy, lemon-squeezy game to bring out this summer, you can't go wrong with Tapple. Draw a category card, start the timer, and you're off. You have to name a thing in that category. Any thing! But you have to tap down the letter that your answer starts with. The category given on the back of the box is PIZZA TOPPINGS. So, pepperoni? Press the P. Feta? Press the F. Tomatoes? Press the T. Pineapple? Oh, heck the P is already pressed! Think up another before the timer runs out or you lose! Last player to get eliminated wins the round!

This game DOES require two AA batteries, which are not included, so pick them up on your way home. I'd love to tell you that you have loads of time to snap this one up, but we all saw what happened with Boop two weeks ago, so if you're thinking of grabbing this week's Game of the Week and adding Tapple to your personal library, go, go, go!

Featured Game: Have you guys ever played MENARA?

Menara is a cooperative dowel-drafting dexterity game. Your objective is to build a towering temple by carefully placing your dowels (on the coloured spot that they belong) according to a randomly drawn instruction card.

Sometimes you get lucky and you only have to place a dowel or two. Sometimes you have to finish up an entire temple tile with the dowels that you have in your hand. Sometimes you draw the card that tells you to move an entire level to the next level up. You just never know!

When we played Menara in store last week, using our rental copy as a demo, we made the mistake of playing it on our wobbly Game of the Week table. DO NOT PLAY MENARA ON A WOBBLY TABLE, it will just make you anxious. Or do and revel in the anxiety. I'm not your mom.

You place the bottom row of tiles (three of them, when we played, all touching) and draw six dowels from the bag to make up a camp. On your turn, you can assess the coloured spots and compare them to the colours in your hand and swap them out for the dowels in the camp, if you'd like. Then you draw a card that tells you your placement rule this turn. There are three different difficulties of tile, but not all of the more difficult options can be accomplished early on in the game. Bear this in mind, because for each placement tile that you can't complete, you have to build another level of tower!

We only played it once, but out of the six levels (four initial levels and two added through the hubris of taking too difficult a goal), we only accomplished three before the tower came crashing down.

Darn wobbly table...

Turns out the majority of our newsletter poll-respondents are happy with what we have to offer. That's great! But among the "we'd also like to see" readers, the results were evenly split between fancier, more expensive paint brushes and GameKnight merch. Hmm... We'll have to see what we can do about those...

And, for the first time ever, a customer reached out through our Discord to give us their written-in answer! No promises, especially when things come direct from the creator and the creator is in the States, but the general manager has reached out to Stonehaven Miniatures so at least the ball is rolling.

Reviews make the world go 'round.

You know how when you go a place, Google asks you on your phone how it was and suggests that you leave a review? "Ooh, you're an important LoCaL gUiDe!" Sure.

Buuuuuut... your local small businesses really do love it when you take the time to tell them that you appreciate them.

Think of it as a little gift. A reward for us doing a good job. And consider leaving that review!
