Vice President, Supply Chain & Procurement
St. Luke’s Health System

St. Luke's Adrian Wengert named to Ten People to Watch
Adrian Wengert has supply chain in his blood. His grandmother managed supplies at a hospital in Twin Falls, Idaho, and his father managed inventory in a military warehouse. His son, Adrian, spent many weekends in that warehouse. “He’d hand me a broom and tell me that keeping the floor clean is good warehouse etiquette,” says Wengert, who grew up in and around Boise, Idaho.

His first job was working in a distribution warehouse at age 18. He spent 10 years in non-healthcare supply chain, leading distribution, operations and inventory management before transitioning into healthcare as logistics manager at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center (in Boise) in 2003, for whom he ultimately served as director of supply chain. He joined Saint Luke’s Health System in 2014.

VA Partners with DoD to Upgrade Supply Chain at High Risk for Abuse
The  Department of Veterans Affairs  announced a partnership with the Defense Department this week to upgrade its supply chain system, which is perennially on a government watchdog agency's  "high risk" list for waste, fraud and abuse .

The partnership with the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) will give the VA access to the DLA's worldwide procurement system in an effort to streamline the VA's purchase of everything from medical and surgical supplies to cleaning equipment and construction materials, the VA said in a news release Monday.

"This is a huge step forward in our efforts to transform VA into a modern, high-performing organization by simplifying operations and leveraging DoD's supply chain system to support our veterans," VA Secretary Robert Wilkie said in a statement.
Army  Lt. Gen. Darrell Williams, director of the DLA, said the agreement would help the VA reduce costs for supplies.

Innovation Spotlight: Inside LSU Health with Patrick E. Reed
Please give us an overview of LSU Health, your department of Technology Management and the initiative you have around Innovation?

Located in the heart of the biomedical district of downtown New Orleans, LSU Health Sciences Center (LSU Health) is one of five research-intensive campuses of the LSU System. LSU Health is comprised of the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Public Health, Allied Health, and Graduate Studies. Our seven strategic research areas are in Oncology, Neuroscience, Cardiovascular Disease, Infectious Disease, Alcohol & Drug Abuse, Oral Health, and Public Health. Our researchers run the spectrum from basic research on fundamental properties of biological systems to patient outcome-centered clinical research – from the bench to the bedside.

The Office of Technology Management (OTM) is primarily responsible for the evaluation, protection, marketing, and licensing of LSU Health innovation- ultimately to get our research to the marketplace for public benefit. The office’s duties have been expanded to also include business development. OTM is looking to lower the activation energy required for industry, foundations, investors, and other external entities to engage with LSU Health. We’re interested in exploring all mutually beneficial partnering opportunities including collaborative or sponsored research, out-licensing our existing technologies, sourcing key opinion leaders, etc.

Piedmont Healthcare joins nonprofit generic drug company Civica
Piedmont Healthcare has joined Civica, a new nonprofit generic drug company with a goal of reducing chronic drug shortages in the United States, Piedmont announced.

Launched last year, Civica supplies its members at least 14 drugs commonly used by hospitals in emergency care, surgery, pain management and in treating hypertension. More recently, Civica announced it would begin providing two antibiotics through a partnership with Xellia Pharmaceuticals.

"At Piedmont, as a nonprofit, we take the responsibility of local access to care ... extremely seriously," Piedmont Healthcare President and CEO Kevin Brown said. "Not only will our membership in Civica allow us to ensure that our front-line care providers have the drugs they need. ... It also means we will be able to do so in a cost-conscious manner."

Spending on drugs per hospital admission increased by 18.5% between fiscal 2015 and fiscal 2017, according to a joint report from the American Hospital Association, Federation of American Hospitals and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists released last winter.
