May 2024

Something from the commissioner...

April saw the first outdoor county event – over 280 rainbows and brownies and their leaders enjoyed a dry but cold day out at Willows Activity Farm. A huge thank you to Bronwen and Charlee for organising the trip and to all the leaders who took their units.

At the end of April we had our county training day brought to a venue near you, an opportunity to complete compulsory training for the leader development programme and more established leaders to refresh and update their skills, everyone had fun and enjoyed the day. Thank you to Lynsey and Deborah for organising it. Don’t forget the day counts towards your training brooches.

In May we have the archery taster day and Pottery Painting to look forward to, more information in the newsletter.

I am delighted to announce that Susan Cole – a previous county commissioner 2000-2005 and current guide leader, has agreed to be our next County President. Many leaders around the county will know Sue already, and she is looking forward to getting out and about and seeing what we are getting up to.

We are working on a project to show off all the best bits about volunteering for Girlguiding Northamptonshire, and who better to show it off than our amazing volunteers!

We’ll be asking for a short clip of yourself telling us why you volunteer, your most memorable experience whilst volunteering, different ways to volunteer, or anything else you’d like to share … it really is your time to shine ⭐️

If you would like to get involved, please send us an email:

pr@girlguidingnorthamptonshire.org.uk

* note the final project will be shared across our social media channels so please bear this in mind *

Girlguiding Northamptonshire are celebrating the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics with a brand new challenge badge –

Girlguiding in motion.

The Olympic and Paralympic values of Excellence, Respect, Friendship and Courage, Determination, Inspiration, Equality are closely aligned with the values and promise of Girlguiding so rather than being just about sport, this challenge is about trying new things, working together and doing your best.

Money raised from sales of the badge will be going towards our county properties so they can host new experiences and adventures for our young members long into the future.

There are 5 parts to the challenge with a range of different activities and suggested UMA connections. The badge is aimed at all sections and can be adapted to the needs of your unit. There are no specific requirements to earn the badge, the most important thing is to have fun, but we suggest that you undertake at least one activity from each part.

Training Brooches

Well done to all our members who have been working hard and already achieved their Training Brooches!

Do You have yours!

These brooches are to thank leaders who give up even more of their time to make sure they keep up to date for their volunteer role. This includes both e-learning, virtual training and face to face training - so doing your safe space, first response or simply attending our county day will give you hours towards your first brooch.

Record cards are available to print from the county website, so you can record what you do and then apply to the office for your hard-earned brooches. It also explains how to count your hours and what can be included.

SAVE THE DATE for the Night Hike

A Double Celebration!

Kingsthorpe and Warden Hill District got together for a slightly delayed Thinking Day celebration on Sunday 24th March. Rainbows, Brownies and Guides joined in an afternoon of Indian themed activities including a Bollywood Dancing session led by staff in Sangam. The girls got to see a full tour of the World Centre and had lots of fun learning a new dance over the wonders of a Zoom call.

It was also a great opportunity to thank Brenda Hewison for her 50 years of volunteering as a leader. Brenda has been leading Chipping Warden Brownies for nearly all that time and has led over 40 pack holidays, 20 Guide camps and 2 Ranger Hostelling trips! She definitely deserved a big cake and some Trefoil friends to celebrate with her.
