We are back with another edition of The Paw Print! Read on for all the updates from the last few months about Hero Dogs programs, events, and more. As always, thank you for your support of our work!
Hero Dogs Max is a facility dog at the Ocean City Fire Department in Ocean City, MD.

Facility dogs assist people in ways distinct from other types of working dogs. In partnership with a trained handler employed by the facility, they work full-time with staff to achieve specific treatment or program goals through animal-assisted therapy.

The mission of the Ocean City Fire Department (OCFD) is protecting the quality of life for Maryland’s premier beach community. Max's primary handler is Ryan Whittington, who is a Firefighter/Medic and a Community Engagement Officer.

Max has proven to be a valuable addition to OCFD's animal-assisted interventions program.

With his handler, Max provides a unique opportunity for students to learn about fire safety. Through interactive classroom sessions, Max helps educate students on ways to keep their families safe and promotes a positive learning environment.

Some of the ways Max supports OCFD's mission include:

  • provides a unique opportunity for students to learn about fire safety;
  • educates students on ways to keep their families safe through interactive sessions;
  • promotes a positive learning environment;
  • acts as a calming and comforting outlet for his colleagues;
  • helps reduce stress levels, increase productivity, and promote overall well-being in the workplace.
to keep up with his work!
Thank you for your support in 2023!
This year on Giving Tuesday, you helped us exceed our goal and raise over $18,000 from 91 donors!

New this year was our puppy naming incentive: everyone who donated $150 or more by the end of Giving Tuesday on November 28th would be entered for a chance to name a Hero Dogs puppy! Hero Dogs Cassie helped us with the drawing; check out the winner here!

We also want to thank you for supporting our end of year giving campaign. We exceeded our 2022 total and could not be more grateful for the support of our Hero Dogs family.

Out &
About
Hero Dogs love to get out in the community and explore new places! Thank you to our volunteers for attending events, for giving the dogs these training opportunities, and for representing Hero Dogs!
Several Hero Dogs therapy dogs and service dogs in training attended the National Association for Home Care & Hospice Convention on 10/15-10/17. They shared with attendees about the services we provide to veterans and first responders and ran bases at the event's "NAHC-tionals Park."
On 11/6, service dogs in training Hero Dogs Ruth, Virginia, and Alyce were good luck charms at the Capitals game! ⁣The pups and handlers had a great time watching the game and even received a generous donation from the folks at Exovera! Thank you to Exovera for the support. ❤️⁣
Several Hero Dogs therapy dogs, including Hero Dogs Ashley and Radar, visited the Montgomery County Police Special Victims Investigations Division on 11/15 to provide comfort and stress relief to the hardworking team.
On 12/16, Hero Dogs Neptune, Virginia, and Ruth visited Arlington National Cemetery with their puppy raisers to participate in the special tradition known as Wreaths Across America. Every holiday season, the fallen are honored with a wreath laid at each grave.
Welcome,
Hero Dogs Howie!
Just before the New Year, we welcomed Hero Dogs Supervisory Special Agent Howard Teten. Hero Dogs Howie is a Labrador retriever puppy who was generously donated to Hero Dogs by Project 2 Heal, where he was born on October 24th.

Howie is sponsored by veteran Brian Wing and is named after Supervisory Special Agent Howard Teten, who lived an incredible life of service. You can read more about Howie's namesake here and follow him on Instagram!
Three Hero Dogs Begin Advanced Training!
Over the last three months, three Hero Dogs began the next chapter of their journeys to become assistance dogs—Advanced Training!

Hero Dogs Morty (left) moved into the kennel in mid-October, followed by Hero Dogs Travis (center) and Hero Dogs Birdie (right) in early December. The dogs are settling well into life in the kennel and are training hard for the next step in their careers! Keep up with all three by following the Advanced Training account on Instagram.
Thanks for joining us!

Hero Dogs Elsie is
mom to 9 puppies!

With the help of ECAD (Educated Canines Assisting with Disabilities), Hero Dogs Elsie gave birth to her first litter on December 22nd. She delivered 9 healthy puppies, two girls and 7 boys.

They are all doing well and we look forward to Elsie and some of her puppies returning to Hero Dogs soon! Her other puppies will join other assistance dog organizations within the Assistance Dogs International North American Breeding Co-op.
We are always on the look
out for Puppy Raisers!
