A Safe Haven for Newborns Gave Me a Chance
Lydia Milagros Casady
Some of you have met Milagros, known as Lydia Casady, from our previous galas; and know she is an amazing and inspirational young lady. Now, we would like to present to you Lydia Casady, the artist.

Seventeen years ago, her birth mother reached out to Safe Haven for Newborns because she was in distress and needed our help; and we were there for her. And, in helping her, we saved the life of her baby. Lydia Casady, began life as Milagros, Safe Haven Baby #48. Do you know Milagros means miracles?

She came into this world with what some people would refer to as challenges, but not Lydia. She is a triple amputee with no mandibles. The first six weeks of her life were spent in the NICU at Miami Children’s Hospital, where doctors didn’t know if she was going to make it. Lydia needed multiple surgeries, one to insert a trachea tube and later a g-tube. The doctors told her forever family that she would probably spend half her life in the hospital because of her delicate condition. She’s proved them wrong; she has rarely been sick.

From a very young age, Lydia drew to express herself and now does the same through her paintings. Art brings her happiness, and her surroundings are her source of inspiration.

Besides being a creative person, she runs track with DASA, Disabled Athlete Sports Association, the local chapter of the US Paralympic Sport Club in her hometown, taking part in the 100-meter, 200-meter, and long jump. The summer before the pandemic, Lydia went to an overnight camp and served as a Junior Camp Counselor to a girl who had less abilities than she. Lydia looks forward to each new day as an opportunity to make a difference.

We hope you will look and bid on the art pieces Lydia created just for A Safe Haven for Newborns. “Safe Haven for Newborns gave me the opportunity to be born, and I want that same opportunity for other babies. By bidding on my art, it will allow Safe Haven for Newborns to raise the funds it needs to help other distressed mothers give their newborns a chance,” said Lydia, Safe Haven Baby #48 Milagros. “That is all we ask, to be given a chance at life.”
