Legends of LIC

Legends of LIC - "The Last of Eden"

By Bob Singleton, Executive Director, Greater Astoria Historical Society

"Some years ago, the historical society received several images painted by Harold Avery, an engraver and illustrator for such publications as Scientific American, Cosmopolitan, Collier’s, and Life Magazines. The LIC native was active from about 1890 to the late 1920s and died rather young . . .

He left behind priceless illustrations giving us a glimpse of the day-to-day life of his home community in western Queens: a dock watchman, a forgotten cemetery, a grounds keeper at the gates of an estate, cattle grazing in a meadow, worker housing next to a factory. Outside a scribble of captions in the reverse, there was no diary or notes describing his work. They were likely only studies to hone his skills as an illustrator." Read more here

Citi Field's Taste of Queens

In 2023, the Mets debuted their first ever community-focused portable called Taste of Queens in Taste of the City on the field level concourse. The goal of the Taste of Queens portable is to highlight and provide exposure for local small businesses to the Mets fan base at Citi Field and to give back to the community.

Citi Field featured four Queens-based businesses during the 2023 season and is looking to build on that success for the 2024 season. It is giving Queens-based small businesses the opportunity to apply and tell their story as to why they should be featured at the Taste of Queens portable next season. Please fill out the application here: https://www.mlb.com/mets/ballpark/taste-of-queens
