Historical Tidbit:

New England's Dark Day

"May 19, 1780 was a remarkable dark day, which extended over the eastern states. It commenced in the area early in the morning and continued till the morning of the 20th.

The atmosphere appeared to be filled with a dense smoke, but there was no known cause which could produce such an effect. The grass and leaves appeared to be drenched in a gloomy green. The darkest time of the day was between eleven and two o'clock.

Many families found it necessary to light a candle when they ate their dinner (noon-time meal). In the night it is said there was not a ray of light even of the feeblest class to distinguish an object though ever so near.' The real cause of this darkness has nestled in conjecture to the present day." A recollection from Hilda (Morton) Thomas (1899-1991)

Back in 1780, there was no way to find an explanation as to what was happening because there were no meteorologists. The revolutionary soldiers spent the day in the taverns or churches not sure what was to come.  Today, scientists believe that wildfires in Canada caused the darkness due to high amounts of ash particles in the atmosphere.

And the next day it had passed, changing like weather in New England always does!

Climate Can Do: How to be Sustainable During the Holidays

There is so much to celebrate but there is also so much more trash generated during these times than usual. With the holiday season soon upon us, let’s take a moment to consider all the ways we can be more environmentally friendly.

Recycling Christmas Trees
If you are buying a real Christmas tree this year, please remove the tree of all decorations like tinsels, ornaments, metal rings and do not cover the tree in plastic bags when throwing them out. Some towns recycle natural Christmas trees into mulch that can be used for municipal landscaping projects. So please take a moment to clear your trees before tossing them out! Check the list below for recycling information specific to Raynham
  • Residents can bring trees to the Raynham Transfer Station where it will be recycled w/ grass and leaves. Only available for Raynham residents, proof of residency is required.

Recycling Electronics
Did you received a new phone or tablet during the holidays? Consider recycling your old electronics instead of throwing it out. Any Staples store accept old electronics everyday. Check out the Staples website for the list of electronics they accept. Below are some Staples locations in the area:
  • 600 S ST W, Raynham
  • 500 Westgate Dr, Brockton

Meet Preston!

For the week of November 20th, the Friends of the Taunton Animal Care Facility (Friends) crowned an Amstaff Bulldog mix named Preston as their Pet of the Week! Eager for someone to become his best friend, Preston is looking for his forever home. This 4-year-old sweetheart would do best as the only pet of the household where he can be the center of attention. He loves cuddles and is very affectionate in nature. Are you a match for Preston?

Since 2001, Friends has been on a mission to help the Taunton Animal Shelter's adoption efforts by providing medical, dietary, and therapeutic care beyond the shelter's budget. Because of their dedicated work, abandoned or surrendered cats and dogs have found happiness and forever homes!

Friends relies on membership fees and donations to help save these animals, as many of the medical procedures are expensive. You can join their mission! Friends is participating in Giving Tuesday on Tuesday, November 28. Please consider making a donation to Friends, so they can continue their amazing work for animals in need.

Additionally, if you've fallen in love with Preston and want to adopt him, call Rob at (508) 822-1463 for more information. You can also visit the Taunton Animal Shelter's website to find more loving animals in need of a forever home.

Strength.

“The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

“Courage is the most important of all the virtues because without courage, you can't practice any other virtue consistently.”~ Maya Angelou

“It’s probably not just by chance that I’m alone. It would be very hard for a man to live with me, unless he’s terribly strong. And if he’s stronger than I, I’m the one who can’t live with him. … I’m neither smart nor stupid, but I don’t think I’m a run-of-the-mill person. I’ve been in business without being a businesswoman, I’ve loved without being a woman made only for love ... I’ve done my best, in regard to people and to life, without precepts, but with a taste for justice.”~ Coco Chanel

“Courage isn't having the strength to go on - it is going on when you don't have strength.” ~ Napoleon Bonaparte
New England winters are not for the faint of heart. Have courage, together we will face the cold, the Nor'easters and the snow; then celebrate together when Spring comes.
For now, let's keep the light on and the flame burning. As the darkness encompasses, we will keep each other warm, our strength multiplying with each smile. Have a strong week. ~ Jacquie
