Children's Chapel
This week's Chapel story is "God's Great Love for You" by Rick Warren for the Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost.
Our Gospel reading this Sunday is Matthew 21:33–46, the parable of the wicked tenants. In it, Jesus tells of a landowner who lovingly plants a vineyard and entrusts it to tenants, but the tenants refuse to give him what is due. They mistreat the servants and even kill the son. Jesus uses this parable to speak about rejecting God’s messengers and ultimately rejecting him.
In the parable, the landowner does not neglect the vineyard — he plants it, fences it, equips it, and entrusts it to others. That reflects God’s generous love and provision.
In the story, God’s love is rejected, but not absent. The tenants’ violence does not mean the owner stopped caring. The tragedy of the parable is that the tenants refuse the relationship and reject those sent to them. The owner finally sends his son. For us, this points to God sending Jesus. That means the parable is not only about judgment. It is also about the extraordinary extent of God’s love and how God comes close to us in Christ.
I have paired the picture book “God’s Great Love for You” with Matthew 21:33–46 because the parable shows that God lovingly provides and patiently reaches out, and it asks us to respond to that love faithfully. God lovingly gives us all that we need and keeps reaching out to us, just as the vineyard owner cared for his vineyard and sent messengers and his son. Matthew 21:33–46 reminds us that God’s love is a gift, but it also calls for a response of gratitude, kindness, and faithfulness. "God’s Great Love for You" gives us the opportunity to talk about how we can show God’s love by the way we treat others and care for the gifts God has given us.
Children through 7th Grade and their families are welcome in our Children's Chapel service following Church School. If your child would like to read the story, serve as crucifer, or read our prayers please let us know!
