Royal Canadian Legion's 2024 Poppy Campaign underway across nation with some innovative changes

Remembrance Day in Canada is fast approaching and will be held on Monday, November 11.

This year, the Royal Canadian Legion has announced some new and innovative ways of getting poppies and donating to the Legion's annual Poppy Campaign.

Article excerpt: "Through an inaugural collaboration with Amazon Canada, the Legion is presenting another way to receive a lapel poppy. A new storefront on Amazon.ca offers lapel poppies for donations of $2, $5, $10, and $20 until November 11. One hundred percent of the funds will go directly to the Legion’s Poppy Trust Fund to help support our veterans and their families. The Legion’s Amazon storefront also offers other products such as “We Remember” lawn signs and red neon window poppies which will continue to be available past November 11 to help Canadians remember. A larger collection of items can be found at the Legion’s online Poppy Store.

Traditional Poppy boxes will once again be available for donations and lapel Poppy distribution at thousands of locations. Another 1000 'Pay Tribute' tap-enabled donation boxes will be found at many Legion Branches, select RBC branches and select retail locations. With $2, $5, and $10 options, donors can also receive a lapel poppy from them. Additionally, supporters can give online at Legion.ca.

Funds donated across the country during the national Poppy Campaign support veterans and their families. What is donated locally is used locally. Close to $20 million is donated each year by generous supporters."

The Royal Canadian Legion's annual Poppy Campaign begins on the fourth Friday of every October and runs until Remembrance Day.

Butter thefts ramp up in Canada

If you live in Guelph, Ontario, keep your butter locked up! Thieves are targetting the delicious dairy product as the holiday season approaches and people stock up for their baking needs.

Article excerpt: "Butter continues to be a hot commodity in Guelph, Ont.

At least seven large-scale thefts have been reported over a 10-month period, including two hauls in just the last month.

On Oct. 12, at around 7:45 p.m., two men entered a store on Speedvale Avenue East.

'They placed a number of items in a cart - including three cases of butter with a value of $936 -and left out a receiving door,' the Guelph Police Service said in a news release."

Three cases of butter are worth $936? Well, that may explain a few things... but who buys butter on the black market? I supposed there's a customer for everything, but it seems a bit extreme.

Elmo and Andrew Garfield make sweet Sesame Street video about grief

Sesame Street does these things so well: communicating complicated feelings to children in a manner to which they can relate. A segment with British actor Andrew Garfield and beloved Muppet Elmo went viral after being posted about 10 days ago. In the video, Garfield discusses grief with Elmo, telling the little red monster that he's been thinking about his late mother lately.

The short video shows a very sweet exchange between the two that is exceedingly touching.

Article excerpt: "Andrew Garfield has inspired renewed discussion online about grief and emotion after a video of him opening up to Sesame Street’s Elmo drew millions of views on social media and an influx of support.

A clip of Garfield talking with the Muppet, shared to X on Friday, sparked a flood of responses from social media users who shared that they can relate to Garfield’s grief.

Garfield’s mother, Lynn, died of pancreatic cancer in 2019 shortly before he began filming his 2021 movie Tick, Tick... Boom! Garfield had previously opened up about how working on the film helped him cope with his loss.

Sitting on a stoop beside Elmo, the actor held a vulnerable conversation about his mourning journey as he told the furry red Muppet about his late mother.

'Elmo’s going around Sesame Street checking in on everybody,' Elmo told a smiling Garfield. 'So, Elmo wants to know how Andrew’s doing?'

With some encouragement from the Muppet, Garfield revealed that he’s been thinking about his mom."

In modern times, pumpkins are used for jack-o'-lanterns at Halloween, but what was used before pumpkins? Turnips, in fact, were used to carve jack-o'-lantern before pumpkins came into popularity - probably because pumpkins were larger and much easier to carve!
