Health in All Policies (HiAP) is a strategy that strengthens the link between health and other policies, creating a supportive environment that enables people to lead healthy lives. HiAP considers the intentional or unintentional impact of non-health policies in areas such as education, housing, transportation, economic development, and others on individual and/or population health.

In this one-day online course, instructors from the Planning Healthy Communities Initiative (PHCI) will focus on how to bring community health and equity into planning processes and decision-making. In addition to hearing presentations, engage in group exercises, discuss opportunities and challenges to integrating health into planning and policy processes, and learn about new statewide collaborative initiatives.

Topics include:

The context of health influences, social determinants of health, and health equity
Data used to measure progress in health objectives
Engaging stakeholders in collaborative and inter-sectoral efforts
Incorporating Health in All Policies into government decision-making processes
The Health Impact Assessment (HIA) and other emerging tools

Meet Your Instructors:

Karen Lowrie, Ph.D.

Dr. Karen Lowrie is an Associate Director for the Environmental Analysis and Communication Group at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University, and a Facilitator of the Planning Healthy Communities Initiative. Karen conducts research, outreach, and education in the fields of urban land use, risk analysis and communication, and environmental health.

Leigh Ann Von Hagen, AICP/PP

A licensed professional planner, Leigh Ann Von Hagen is a Senior Research Specialist at the Alan M. Voorhees Transportation Center at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University. A leader in bringing health considerations into non-health sector decisions, she was instrumental in launching several statewide health initiatives including Safe Routes to School, Sustainable Jersey, Mayors Wellness Campaign, and Shaping NJ.
