Elms College Signs MOU with Yarmouk University in Jordan
|
|
Representatives from College of Our Lady of the Elms and Yarmouk University in Irbid, Jordan last week signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) allowing qualified students at Yarmouk to complete their master’s degree in biotechnology via Elms College’s online learning platform.
The MOU signing was held synchronously via Zoom with members of the Elms College administration and biology department in Chicopee and members of the Yarmouk University College of Arts and Sciences in Irbid, Jordan.
Following the signing, the MOU is effective immediately and classes are planned to start with the fall 2022 semester.
“This partnership between Yarmouk University and Elms College is important not only because of the wonderful opportunities it gives students but also because of the possibility it offers to collaborate and share our knowledge and cultures,” said Harry E. Dumay, Ph.D., MBA, president of Elms College. “The academic cooperation in the area of biotechnology through the partnership offers unlimited possibilities between Elms and Yarmouk and opens the door for expansion into other areas of study and exchange in the future.”
“I want to thank Sudad Saman, assistant professor of Biology at Elms, for his role in establishing this partnership with Yarmouk,” said Dumay.
In addition to the biotechnology program, the MOU with Yarmouk University includes future cooperation in the areas of research, short-term study abroad, seminars, conferences, workshops, and faculty/student exchanges.
Yarmouk University currently has two other collaborative agreements with Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania and Utah State University in Logan, Utah.

Margaret Munns '44 Celebrates 100th Birthday
|
|
Margaret (Sausville) Munns '44, is celebrating her 100th birthday on April 12, 2022. She was born and raised in Bennington, Vermont. She has four children, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, one of her granddaughters passed away 10 years ago. Growing up, Margaret's dad was the warden and mom was the matron of the Bennington County Jail in the '20s and '30s. Her family lived in the warden's quarters at the jail from the time Margaret was about 3 until she was 13. She says she will always remember the people that she met and the adventures she had with her sister Rita. Those experiences lead her to write a book called, The Jail Years.
While at the Elms, she majored in French and minored in Spanish. Margaret went on to teach high school French. One of her fondest memories from Elms was helping decorate for the junior prom. She says, "it was wartime and there weren't a lot of resources. We searched all over campus for things that we could use to make the gym look like a special place. In the basement of one of the buildings, we found a big roll of black paper. But we were afraid that the black paper would make things bleak. Then I had the idea of using it as a background for a skyline. So, we painted buildings in yellow paint on the paper, and it was perfect."
Nowadays, Margaret loves to raise and propagate houseplants and she belongs to the book club at the Senior Center in her town. She enjoys reading books in both English and French, while also taking a stab at the weekly crossword puzzle. Her daughter is going to teach her how to do Wordle. Margaret wanted to add that "I have a great appreciation for my ancestry and those who have spent time searching the annals of the Suasville/ Boutin lineage. I will be forever grateful for the 63 years that I had with my late husband Red Munns."

The Athletic Program is having great results in its inaugural year in its new conference, the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC). The field hockey team, the women's soccer team, the women's volleyball team, the golf team, and the men's and women's cross country teams all participated in the GNAC fall postseason championships. Our field hockey team made it into the semifinals of their conference tournament. A total of 67 fall STUDENT-athletes were selected to the GNAC All-Conference Academic Team. The women's basketball team and the men's and women's swimming teams participated in the GNAC winter postseason championships, with our women's basketball team hosting a very exciting first round game (a win!) before a capacity crowd. This momentum is continuing into the spring sport season where all of the teams (baseball, softball, men's volleyball, women's lacrosse) are all off to great starts. We encourage everyone to come out and support the Blazers this spring. Schedules can be found here on the Athletic Department's website.
