Feast Day of Mary of Magdala
Today is the feast day of Mary of Magdala!
Here is testimony to a love for which we yearn. This poem was buried in a reflection by Heather Ruse at the Contemplative Society.
This poem doesn’t have a name that I can find so we may think of it as: “Thinking of Mary of Magdala and Kenosis” (self-emptying).
May you find your heart as you lose your breath!
One gentle breath takes you on a
pilgrimage to the heart.
One gentle breath carries you across
the space between the sun and moon.
One exhalation sweeps away
the endless past, with all its stories
of Me and Mine.
One inhalation stirs the buried seed,
releases the sap,
bathes the earth in song.
The blues of the sky pour through you
and your body becomes
a crystal window
because you have wounded your chest
with this invitation:
"Come fill me, empty me,
drown me in the silence of your Name!"
O pilgrim, seeker, warrior of
cleansing transformations,
wield this breath wisely.
It is a burning sword of love.
— Alfred K LaMotte

Social Justice Reflection
By Tom Moos
On July 4, the President signed his “Big, Beautiful, Bill” into law after it narrowly passed Senate and House approvals. The bill is projected to add an estimated $3.4 trillion to the national debt over the next 10 years, according to the Congressional Budget Office. The bill is expansive, touching on almost every government agency. It makes permanent the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which was slated to sunset at the end of the year while increasing spending for border security, defense and energy production. Today, I’d like to focus specifically on the bill’s impact on immigration.
The bill significantly increases funding for immigration enforcement by allocating $100 billion to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the agency central to the administration's efforts to crack down on illegal immigration in the US. Prior to the bill, the existing annual budget for ICE was about $8 billion. The funding boost now makes ICE the largest federal law enforcement agency, according to the non-profit Brennan Center for Justice. Here is how that money is intended to be spent:
$45 billion for ICE's detention system. Based on cost estimates, the money could allow ICE to hold more than 100,000 detainees at any given time, roughly doubling the current capacity.
$30 billion for ICE's arrest and deportation efforts to hire additional deportation officers and other staff; retain current personnel through bonuses; increase transportation assets supporting deportation efforts; and expand and facilitate agreements that allow state and local officials to enforce federal immigration laws. The funds can also be used to modernize ICE's fleet of deportation aircraft and hire more agency prosecutors whose job it is to persuade immigration judges that unauthorized immigrants should be deported.
Tens of billions of dollars for other immigration and border efforts. More than $46 billion is allocated for Customs and Border Protection to build walls, barriers and related projects along the U.S.-Mexico border. The agency received an additional $12 billion to fund Border Patrol agent vehicles, facilities, training, hiring and bonuses.
It grieves my soul to the core that all of this money is being used punitively, for enforcement operations that historically have been aggressive and indiscriminate, racist, and violate every Biblical mandate to welcome the foreigner. The bill does nothing to correct the broken immigration policies or processes that today hinder America from being a land of opportunity and safety for asylum seekers.
