October is National Principals Month!

SCPS is proud to celebrate the incredible principals who lead our schools with passion, purpose, and heart every day. From supporting students and staff to building strong school communities, our principals are at the center of creating places where every student can learn, grow, and thrive.

What's Cool in Our Schools

Growing Opportunities at Lawton Chiles Middle School

Students at Lawton Chiles Middle School are digging into hands-on learning as they prepare the school garden for another growing season.

Students have been hard at work filling and preparing all 18 raised garden beds, creating a space that will soon be ready for planting and agricultural exploration.

But the garden is about much more than growing plants. As students work together to prepare, plant and care for the beds, they have opportunities to take learning beyond the classroom and gain firsthand experience with agriculture, plant science and the work that goes into growing and maintaining a successful garden.

With the groundwork complete, the garden is ready to bloom. We can’t wait to see what students grow, discover and accomplish this season!

Caught Speeding Through Math Facts!

Recently, students at Idyllwilde Elementary School were caught “speeding," but this time, it was something to celebrate!

Students who demonstrated math fact fluency on their September math fluency check received special “speeding tickets” recognizing their hard work and achievement.

Deputy Paez and Math Coach Mrs. Neff made their rounds to personally deliver the tickets and celebrate these FACT-TASTIC mathematicians for speeding through their math facts.

As an added reward, each student received 25 Bizi Bucks for their accomplishment.

Congratulations to Idyllwilde Elementary’s mathematicians for putting their math skills into high gear

Lake Mary NJROTC Shines at Field Meet

Lake Mary High School’s NJROTC cadets delivered an outstanding performance at their recent field meet at Centennial High School.

Competing against 10 other schools across 10 events, the Rams finished first place overall, earning an early qualification for the Regional State Championships in March.

The strong finish reflects the cadets’ dedication, teamwork, and preparation as they continue to sharpen their skills and build momentum throughout the season.

Next up, the cadets will travel to Gaither High School in Tampa on Dec. 5th for their next major field meet. The team is excited and motivated to build on its success as they prepare for the next challenge.

Congratulations to the Lake Mary High School NJROTC cadets on an impressive achievement and a great start to the competition season!

South Seminole Academy Celebrates Cultures from Around the World

South Seminole Academy recently brought its school community together for a celebration of cultures from around the world during its International Culture Expo.

The event showcased the diversity of the SSA community through performances, exhibitions, food and activities highlighting traditions and customs from different countries and regions.

Students, families and staff had the opportunity to experience and learn about cultures beyond their own while celebrating the backgrounds and traditions represented throughout the school community.

The International Culture Expo was more than a celebration—it was an opportunity to learn from one another, make connections and celebrate what makes the SSA family unique.

Congratulations to everyone who helped make the International Culture Expo a success!

In the Spotlight

Greenwood Lakes Teacher Takes Learning to Mars

Greenwood Lakes Middle School teacher Bianca Melendez is taking learning to new heights as she participates in Spaceward Bound Utah, a five-day immersive experience at the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah.

The program gives K–12 educators the opportunity to experience what it could be like to live and conduct research on Mars. Through hands-on science, engineering and exploration, participants work in a Mars-like environment while experiencing some of the challenges future space missions could face.

Throughout her mission, Ms. Melendez is gaining firsthand experiences and new ideas she can bring back to her classroom, helping connect her students to real-world STEM learning.

Her journey is showing just how far learning can go; even beyond Earth!
