Social Work Licensure Compact Update

The Chapter received an update regarding the development of an interstate compact for social work licensure. The social work compact development process has been led by the Council of State Governments (CSG), through funding from the Department of Defense. The licensure compact will facilitate multistate practice among member states and reduce the barriers to license portability. The first draft of the compact was released in July 2022, and is currently open for public comment. Read the compact draft at https://compacts.csg.org/compact-updates/social-work/

NASW developed a set of Frequently Asked Questions related to the development of an interstate licensure compact here. To view the video from the event NASW hosted on July 26th, click here.

STAKEHOLDER REVIEW
The review process will occur throughout the summer. Check compacts.csg.org for additional details including weekly information sessions. CSG will reconvene representatives from ASWB, CSWA and NASW throughout the stakeholder review phase to assess responses and make necessary edits to the draft. The editing process will continue until stakeholder suggestions are thoroughly addressed.
Social Workers Needed for Seattle/King County Clinic

Seattle/King County Clinic is preparing to open its doors at Seattle Center on Oct. 20-23 to provide eye exams and prescription eyeglasses free of charge to more than 1,000 people in need. To meet this ambitious goal, organizers are recruiting hundreds of volunteers for the undertaking. Although no dental or medical care will be offered this year, after more than two years on hiatus, the clinic still expects the interest from prospective patients to be high. The Clinic is recruiting social workers and other health professionals to staff the event. Read more here.

PACE Activities: More Endorsements to Come

PACE stands for Political Action for Candidate Election. The purpose of PACE is to promote NASW legislative policies through political action and through support of candidates. The Chapter PACE Committee provides support to candidates in statewide elections who support legislation and policies that are consistent with the goals of the social work profession and the needs of those who are served by the social work profession. The Chapter PACE Committee completed an initial round of endorsements in June and will meet in August to decide on more endorsements. View our endorsements list here.

PACE provides this support is through endorsements of campaigns and through donations to candidates, especially those in swing districts or potentially close elections. Each election, PACE seeks donations from NASW-WA members for this effort. Please consider making a donation to PACE today at https://www.nasw-wa.org/make-a-pace-donation

Thank you in advance for your donation!
Legislative Alerts

Take Action to Extend Medicare Telehealth Flexibilities

Tell your senators to support the Advancing Telehealth Beyond COVID–19 Act of 2022 and urge Senate leadership to advance this legislation to ensure that patients and/or clients can access mental and behavioral health services through telehealth beyond the PHE. Click here to take action!

Urge Your U.S. Senators to Pass the Respect for Marriage Act

NASW affirms that marriage equality is an essential and constitutional right and that all couples are entitled to full and equal recognition under the law. NASW steadfastly supports legislation consistent with this affirmation, including the Respect for Marriage Act (H.R. 8404), which was passed by the House of Representatives with bipartisan support on July 19th. Tell your senators to urgently support the Respect for Marriage Act to ensure that every person is able to marry the person that they love and that marriage equality remains constitutionally protected. Click here to take action!

Urge Your Congressional Lawmakers to Pass the Simplifying and Strengthening Public Service Loan Forgiveness Act

Despite the incredibly valuable services that social workers provide, access to student loan debt relief has remained largely out of reach for this workforce. That is why NASW supports legislation like the Simplifying and Strengthening Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Act of 2022 (H.R. 8330/S. 4345) which would make permanent the recent improvements to the PSLF program under the Biden Administration, and would implement other commonsense reforms to help America’s public servants lower the cost of higher education.
