Election 2024: Get to know your local election officials

“For election officials, it's really important for people to know that integrity matters to them. Truth matters to them. And trust matters to them. In order to have all of those things, it's really important for journalists to establish relationships with election officials. To get to know them — especially on their local level — so that integrity in the process can then transfer over to integrity in the article and in the information. … Most election officials don't have a public information officer, especially as you get down to the states like Michigan, Wisconsin, Maine, where it's more decentralized. They don't have someone on staff to do this for them, to do the communications for them. So understand that you have to earn their trust. And you have to establish that relationship before they're going to be willing to have those conversations with you.”

CAREER

Advice for future broadcasters

"This is a calling and not just a paycheck. This isn’t a platform to see yourself on TV. This is a career that is rewarding professionally but you aren’t going to get rich doing it. Find your voice as a journalist and your brand: What are you about? What can your viewer expect from a story you are following? Remember that your relationship with the viewers is the most important one you will have in your career. We owe our community that respect so that they can trust what we report. The credibility you bring to every story is what your viewers will expect."

Yami Virgin, anchor and reporter at FOX SA, excerpt from “FOX San Antonio's Yami Virgin reflects on longtime journalism career”
