Dear Friend -

Every Autumn since 2010, as the leaves start falling from the trees, you have seen Mittens for Detroit collection boxes appear in your favorite restaurant, coffee shop, store, library, or at your office. But not this year. Because of COVID-19 health concerns, we are unable to hold our public collection.

COVID-19 or not, it's getting cold out there. You've probably been looking for your mittens and gloves. Tens of thousands of Detroiters need pairs to warm their hands every morning. More than one-quarter million pairs have been collected and distributed to these folks in our first 10 seasons.

The model for MFD has been based on community support, with 32,000 pairs of new mittens and gloves donated every year. We were not sure what to do when the pandemic broke out and the writing was on the wall. We thought about simply closing the doors for a year, to wait until next year to continue our work.

Facts are facts - it's cold out there, and thousands of kids, teens, and adults need gloves. The only way for MFD to get them on hands this year, is to pivot to fundraising and purchasing pairs from our wholesale partners. The need is huge, and people depend on MFD and you to help them stay warm. You are big part of our first 10 years' success - and we need you now to step up once again.

We hope that you can find a way to help us as winter quickly approaches. Perhaps by making your year-end donation earlier than usual. Or purchasing something from our amazing Art4Gloves virtual fine art gallery and sale. Maybe you'll throw on some good shoes and take part in our Virtual Halloween Fun Run or Walk or Creep or Crawl. If you give to United Way, you might start designating that donation to MFD. And if you shop at Target and belong to their Target Circle, you can once again help us win a large grant from them as we move into the holiday season. These easy ways for you to help, and they will have a great impact on our ability to meet the needs of others. Read all about these options below.

We need you. More than ever. You can help us raise funds so that we can buy the mittens and gloves now. You can make a difference, and we hope that you will.

Thank you for all of your support, year after year!

Warmly,

Wendy Shepherd, Executive Director, Mittens for Detroit
and
The MFD Board of Directors
