As graduation season approaches—a time of celebration, new opportunities, and bright futures—many Maine families are confronting difficult financial realities. While we honor the achievements of our graduates, we also recognize that behind many of these successes are individuals carrying the weight of student loan debt. For some, the dream of higher education has become a source of ongoing stress, uncertainty, and financial strain.

The student loan landscape has shifted again. For the first time in five years, the federal government has resumed collecting on defaulted student loans—a change that could have serious consequences for thousands of Mainers. Many vulnerable individuals may face losing their income, tax refunds, or essential benefits like Social Security.

At Pine Tree Legal Assistance, we hear from people every day who are overwhelmed—parents, workers, and students—trying to navigate a confusing system without clear guidance. Thanks to your generosity, we’re here to help them find a path forward.

What's Changing for Borrowers

Here's what Maine borrowers are now facing:

  • Over 186,000 Mainers carry student debt totaling more than $6.5 billion
  • Tax refunds and Social Security benefits (starting in June) are now being seized from borrowers in default
  • Wage garnishment is expected to resume this summer
  • Court rulings have disrupted popular income-driven plans like the SAVE Plan, leaving many without affordable options

This sudden shift is causing widespread confusion and fear—and for many, it threatens financial stability.

Your Support Makes a Difference

Pine Tree Legal is providing free legal guidance to Mainers with low incomes facing urgent issues such as:

  • Loss of federal benefits or tax refunds
  • Barriers to enrolling in repayment or forgiveness programs
  • Uncertainty about changing federal rules
  • Default and aggressive debt collection

And for those who qualify, we help explore options like:

  • Loan Rehabilitation and Consolidation
  • Disability Discharge
  • Public Service Loan Forgiveness, and more.

Pine Tree Legal also helps connect borrowers to resources like the Maine Student Loan Repayment Tax Credit, which offers up to $2,500 per year—a vital support for those living and working in Maine while repaying student loans.

Whether it’s helping someone understand their rights or walking them through the steps to get out of default, we’re here because you’ve made that possible.

Student Loan Relief in Action: 49 Lives Changed

Thanks to your support, in 2024, Pine Tree Legal Assistance provided free public access to legal information about rapidly-changing legal issues impacting student borrowers and, through direct legal services, helped resolve 49 student loan cases, providing vital relief to Mainers struggling with debt.

We helped borrowers save more than $249,000 in student loan debt—real relief for real people. These weren’t just statistics—they were our neighbors, parents, and workers trapped in a system that too often works against them. And because of you, they had someone in their corner.

Take, for example, a married couple—both living with disabilities—who were unknowingly caught in a student loan repayment scam that drained over $140 from them each month. With help from our attorney, they stopped the scam and regained control of their finances. We also helped them both obtain Disability Discharges—so no more loans for them!

Their experience is just one of many that highlights the financial challenges so many Mainers face—and how legal aid can bring real stability and justice.

Because of your generosity, we’re not just helping clients reduce debt—we’re helping them rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.

Where did you go to law school?

'I went to Yale Law School. I enjoyed being a part of the Housing Clinic, representing homeowners facing foreclosures.'

What is your most memorable Pine Tree case?

'I worked with a client who was applying for Nursing school, but unable to finish the application because her undergraduate school was withholding her transcript and refusing to release it. It was a confusing situation, but it turned out the client had a defaulted federal loan that she had no idea about that was causing the transcript hold. The Nursing school application deadline was fast approaching, and student loan defaults impact eligibility for future financial aid. I worked with the school and client to get the transcript released and the client enrolled in a plan that would get the loan out of default (and restore aid eligibility). That was a rewarding and exciting case!'

What brought you to Pine Tree and what did you do before?

'I had heard great things about Pine Tree and was hoping to do consumer legal aid work somewhere in the Northeast. I'm so glad it worked out! I love working on consumer cases and getting money back to clients and helping them feel in control of a scary and intimidating financial situation that has been causing them a lot of stress. Before law school, I worked at a research lab at Harvard Law School, studying different outreach and assistance methods in debt collection cases. I also worked at a cafe in Cambridge, called Hi-Rise, and got to take home lots of amazing bread and pastries every week.'

Tell us a fun fact!

'I had to wear an eye patch for a couple years when I was younger.'

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

'I would love to be better at sewing, basketball, and gardening.'

What was your first CD?

'My first CD was probably a Coldplay CD. When I was maybe 6 or 7, I really wanted a Britney Spears CD, but my parents said no and that Coldplay or U2 would be much cooler options.'
